2017: £121m turnover with net profit of £9.8m. 2018 undoes all that with turnover of £84.1m and a net loss of £10.1m. Swings and roundabouts I suppose. Since incorporation in 2005 they've made cumulative profit of £8.8m but another year like 2018 could easily wipe that all out.

When he stood there in the den, his valuation was over the moon compared to what he achieved before. They asked, who's your biggest customer and what's that spend in purchasing his products. The man couldn't answer it. At that moment, you either declare you are out, or try to mitigate the risk by asking for a bigger equity stake. Plain and simple.
@arsi977524 жыл бұрын
they only want the investments that they are able to rip people off and takle a huge part of their company - because of their mates at the squash club etc who sell sell for hard cash and equity

He has a contract for 800 grand and they want to give him 150,000 for 40% of his company permanently. Even the dragons who try and say they can help the company and add value, he is a well established company that needs no help, only a short term investment.
@andrewlockett45697 жыл бұрын
Riamu no, he needed a lot of help. Just having a great product is not enough. And it's not a rip off if he accepts their offer, his valuation to that point in time standing there was way over the top.

@@andrewlockett4569 What a retarded logic, it doesn't suddenly stop being a rip off because he accepted it in a high pressure environment, he didn't need that much help at all they massively overvalued their "contacts" and it's proven by what he's achieved since, he has a great business now and did back then, his valuation was high but there's was deplorable and extremely neafarious. He has a single contract worth 800k and many other major companies at the table, it's a blatant rip off i bet the BBC stepped in.

Delighted he didn’t go through with the deal in the end after seeing how successful and profitable the company went on to be. @@ifwecouldvote it doesn't matter. A business turning over that much still has a lot of value even if it isn't profitable at the moment. He has an established brand in the market and other IP which has value and also its much easier to make a company with that kind of revenue profitable than to start from scratch
@tarcal876 жыл бұрын
So he already had a deal for 175,000 laptop cases per month, that's just from one company. And he saw Theo's surprise on hearing that number, and later saying Theo only sells 10-20k units a YEAR. So at that point the guy must have been confident that 5% is reasonable, having already had a huge contract. Conclusion: There is no way he would (or any sane person) go anywhere near 40%, an obvious rip-off. Therefore it's safe to say he simply went along with it for free advertisement on TV, dragging 4 dragons into a greedy competition. It's the best advertisement ever, makes any viewer believe it's a strong product worth fighting for. AFAIK he never made the deal after the show, and he was turning over some 20+ million USD a year like a year or two later, on his own. Gotta say, very clever, having seen 5% was no longer possible, he didn't even care what % the Dragons would offer next, he was just going to play along for publicity.
@Locutus5 жыл бұрын
I don't quite agree. I reckon he was genuine, but I think they asked for too much, Theo and Peter. He had already done the donkey work and had huge contracts in place.

Jesus christ mey, I have said a billion times. "YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR NUMBERS." FROM A to Z. I do part time accounting and I'm flabbergasted, when I conduct Auditing to a small business, most of them don't know their expenses from month to month. I started from nothing in 1998, and I along with my sister have open a successful Beauty salon in Brooklyn. The beauty salon was for sale for $15,000 pounds in 1998. Now my beauty salon in 2019 is worth $170,000 with zero debt.

40% was a complete and utter rip off. So glad he turned them down after the show and became hugely successful anyway. His valuation was totally fair considering how much money he was already making and with those huge orders already in the pipeline. In this case it was the dragons' valuation of his business that was way off the mark and frankly ridiculous.

02:05 that material that hardens on impact ... seems to me it would just feel nice and soft in everyday use, but on impact it would transfer all of the force to the item being "protected", almost the opposite of crumple zones on car
@davidbarker50474 жыл бұрын
Was thinking the same thing? But it must work I guess theyre pretty succesfull now.
@taylaca4 жыл бұрын
Actually the energy of the impact is converted into the structural energy that locks the material together into its hard form. i.e. that fact that it got hard means that it has absorbed some of the force. You are correct that a hard case would transfer the force to the item. Equally, a soft case would not offer much protection because a phone case is very thin and it would barely absorb any of the force before it reached the item. Using a non-newtonian material to transfer the force throughout the material's intermolecular bonds is far better.

This might be the best pitch of all time in the den, the entire interaction was perfect. It was awesome how it started meh but he just kept applying the pressure and impressing with his range turnover and technology, then he drpped the 37k laptop sleeves BOMBSHELL. Peter made an aggressive offer, but I had to laugh at how with such a product he wants more equity because the value he offers yet offers HALF the money LOL. So essentially any other Dragon would want 20% as well for their half. Why didn't he just offer the full amount? When Deborah came in for 15% I was shook, Dragon moment just like she said, gave him the ultimate choice. Love that she did that and part of me wanted him to take her offer but in the end you can imagine the hands that Peter would help him shake and he'd be kicking himself if he didnt take that

Everyone's always complaining how the dragons get more money than they invested. But that's the point of investing... They would be pretty shitty investors if that didn't happen. Plus normally in those cases the original people are still earning a lot of profit they can take home and it's possible that business probably wouldn't of done so well without their help. It's never too greedy if their offer is accepted, no such thing. Absolutely ludicrous how some people think that's ripping people off. Anyone who thinks that has some twisted idea of ethics in their head. I'm sure all of their business partners are grateful for their offers (otherwise they wouldn't have accepted them...). No one knows the future these things are risks and having the help of a dragon can help mitigate a lot of that risk.
