Dragon's Dogma 2's storyline is a time loop trip of twists, revelations, and false endings just like the original. Today, I'll break down the true ending and alternate paths, delving into a full explanation of the cycle’s end, the Pathfinder’s role, key distinctions from the first game’s ending and so much more! Of course, spoilers abound as we dissect the endings of DD2!
We’ll start with a brief overview of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s main plot, which is necessary to set up and explain the endings.

@@jarhead2808 So it takes place in the future? I mean it's all weird and not explained very well, because pawns come from different worlds. Are they just parallel universes? And that's what the Great Will was getting tired of watching? These random parallel worlds popping up doing the same thing as the other worlds. What was this oblivion that was destroying them? The Brine? Can't be cuz the Brine was a part of the Pathfinder to limit mankind and creation to this one continent in order to watch it and contain it for this "video-game-esque" role they've been given to play.

They make it seem like a remake until you break the world… then if you’re observant you’ll notice: the seafloor shrine is actually the capital from the last game, swallowed up by the brine. It’s a true sequel, but in the last game you successfully reset the cycle. I was mind blown when someone told me, I didn’t even notice in my playthrough. 😢

Unlocking NG+ after beating the true ending was confusing for me. It made it seem like after breaking the cycle we got sent back to the start but this time without the pathfinder being around, but that’s obviously not the case. There should’ve been a free roam option for after you saved the world from oblivion.

In the first game you could've, but you'd be invisible and all powerful since you'd be the seneschal . In this game on the other hand, you defeat the seneschal and break the cycle at the same time because this seneschal didn't want to give away his position willingly. Edit: Which is also why you get the godsbane from the spirit of the last arisen who attempted to take the mantle of seneschal, instead of getting it from the seneschal. Probably also why the godsway is a thing in this game. Too much meddling from the seneschal just screwed things up.

To be specific, it seems The Watching One/Pathfinder is actually the entity above the Seneschal. Savan hinted at it in his dialogues in DD1, especially when you question him after the fight. Rothais seems to have become Seneschal before the story but then chose to abandon his post, which may be why the Pathfinder is now taking charge directly. While we joked that The Brine > Seneschal in DD1 because you still couldn't swim after becoming Seneschal, it unironically is true canonically now xD

NG+ (probably) isn't canon, just like Dragon's Dogma 1. But DD1 made a cheeky reference with the face of the Seneshal on repeat for thematic reasons. At least that's how I interpret it.

@@TheTexasDice Don't know about that... The pawns reference the fact that it is canonical by telling you things like "I knew you would not abandon this world, arisen." or "I'd thought you'd return to us. Seems I was right." and the like. The pawns seem to persist throughout the cycles.

it was always my understanding that the brine LET you go to bitterblack. I actually really liked the ending of the second game, and I find it complimentary to the original's. In the original you start the game as Savan, an arisen who completed the dogma and became the seneschal, a steward of the world who guides it. After some unknown amount of time the seneschal started a new dogma, sending out a dragon to find the next arisen to replace him. He found Grigori who's life essence wasn't enough to take the mantle of the Senechal so he became the Dragon himself. The Dragonforged and Duke edmund both failed in their persuits of slaying the dragon. One due to weakness, the other due to fear and greed. In the end the main character steps up and takes the mantle, break the cycle to create a new cycle. In this game the seneschal, or the "greater will" resented the loss of his position so he cast out the cycle's purpose and made it his own. He meddled with the affairs of mortals to stop the cycle from ever taking his place. Once the arisen vanquishes the dragon this seneschal stops the cycle by not opening the Everfall for the arisen to reach him, instead giving the arisen a false title of monarch to take. But this world's dragon has seen this happen many times over due to the seneschal's tight grip on his position and he tried to show arisen how to end the cycle despite the seneschal's meddling. In the end the seneschal laments his loss of this new cycle's potential unraveling Infront of him. The seneschal gone now a new cycle may begin. It's clear that Savan took his position with loyalty to the world, while this seneschal did everything in his power to grab hold of his place in the cycle. He was aware of the overarching cycle, The dragon, the arisen, the rise of a new seneschal the fall of the seneschal. But he wanted it to end with him on the throne. This whole game was still in Gransys, The sea shrine is Gran Soren, the moonglint tower is the bluemoon tower, the arena where the dragon fight commences is the same. The cycle repeated even after the arisen broke it in the first game. the lands shifted and a new cycle began. (mostly turned south to north TBH... Gran Soren, though smaller, is simply turned around 180 degrees.)

The only thing really missing from the true ending is Into Free playing on the background. Also, the rationale behind the true ending might be a "Old Gods" type of thing. If we assume the Oblivion that consumes worlds is some sort of Old God-esque entity, some things will make sense. If you're interested, read on. Since this Old God constantly consumes every new world The Will of all existence is giving birth to, The Will needed to do something to stop it. However, it was only able to "confine" the Old God into the form of a Dragon that constantly reincarnates, and thus The Will has to make the endless chain system of an Arisen being born in order to constantly kill it. A successful Arisen will regain their heart, grow old, and eventually die. The Dragon reincarnates, and another Arisen is chosen to deal with it. In this loop, the existence of the world is kept going as well as safe from the Dragon (if the Arisen takes the Dragon's offer, the world keeps existing but the life in it is under constant danger of the Dragon, leading into civilization not flourishing). We then get introduced into the concept of the God's Bane. The God's Bane likely represents humanity's ultimate power of unlimited potential. By using the God's Bane on the Dragon's heart, the Arisen essentially destroys the Old God/Oblivion (as it is a god-killer Deus Ex Machina), therefore breaking the endless chain, and removing the need for there to be any Arisen and Dragon in the future. This also ties in with Pawns if you think about it. Pawns are likely The Will's way to have a contingency plan against the Dragon. By creating the Pawn system, and hiding their source behind the Rift (outside the reality of that world), The Will is able to stock the Pawn Knowledge that will always certainly prove useful to each and every future Arisen, ensuring that they can assist whoever the Arisen may be, in defeating their Dragon counterpart. This way, even if the Dragon is able to destroy most of civilization the Arisen will always have a Pawn that can teach them and guide them into fulfilling their mission. Even if the Rift Stones were to be destroyed (as many of them are in 2), just having the Arisen nearby is enough to fix them again. What The Will did not take into account with Pawns is that they are most likely made from something that resembles Oblivion, as well as humanity and its power of infinite potential, all combined into one. This is why Dragonkin/Oblivion is able to possess their bodies. On the other hand, this is also why they can gain a soul and humanity the more they become closer to their Arisen. It is also likely that Oblivion and the Brine are linked or are one. In the true ending you actually see the Brine's tentacles appear on the Dragon's body at some point. Just like this video states, it is possible that the Dragon has also started getting a sense of "self" or humanity after so many cycles, seeing as Dragons are also apparently possibly previous Arisen. This is why Talos tries to take down the Dragon before it can face the Arisen with the God's Bane, which would likely destroy the Old God's existence.

Dragons Dogma is rooted heavily in Nietzschean philosophy. Oblivion represents nihilism - the rejection of inherent meaning to the world and our lives. The Greater Will represents God, who bestows purpose unto humans in the form of the cycle. The dragon represents the values that people hold and the Arisen represents will, either to slay the dragon (accepting the values it stands for) or to shirk their duty (rejecting those values but not creating new ones). In any case whether the dragon is slain or not the cycle is perpetuated and in turn God continues to bestow purpose to humanity. The Godsbane blade in universe is a relic from the first games cycle where it was a tool for releasing the seneschal from his duty. In terms of Nietzsche it represents the death of God that ushers in nihilism but also beckons the arrival Nietzsche's Ubermensch or the Superman. This is why in DD2 using the Godsbane Blade to halt the cycle by killing your character and in turn he dragon who possesses your heart, ushers in Oblivion and causes the Pathfinder to accuse you of apathy and rejection of your role or purpose. As far as pawns are concerned, in the first game pawns played a role in representing Nietzsche's idea of eternal recurrence, wherein they were an extension of the Arisen's character intended to carry on their will. This theme continues in DD2 in a slightly different way in the form of the dragonsplague. Pawns in DD2 are likely intended to mirror the Arisen's development as the Ubermensch, as they are shown to develop a will of their own with your main pawn even referring to Nietzsche's 'will to power' during the true endings final cutscene. As for the connection between the brine and oblivion, this probably refers to Nietzsche's description of nihilism as being like a sea, formless and structureless, fluid but ultimately an undefined nothingness. The brine manifests this description perfectly and was likely used to emphasise these traits in oblivion. What the true ending represents as a whole is the arisen cultivating a will to power to use nihilism (Oblivion) as a bridge to becoming the superman.

That's actually a good theory. Rothais, the mad sovran at the seafloor shrine, sits on a throne identical to the throne of the senechal from the first game and he even gives the arisen the gods bane out of his soul/chest similar to the senechal in the first game. So your theory could be right. Would be nice if the player could use God's bane on Rothais and become the next senechal as a hidden ending and maybe trigger the post game by using God's bane on them self as the senechal.
@hapmaplapflapgap
@hapmaplapflapgap Ай бұрын
I think that is how we are supposed to interpret it. The Senechal in the last game was still just a pawn that upheld the world through his will, and when he starts to lose his will the next cycle begins. But I think there's something more going on here. Neither Pathfinder nor Rothais seem like traditional Senechal as seen in DD1, not to mention that we don't have the Everfall here. Also Rothais still has plenty of will in him and is ready to fight who he thinks is sent by the Watcher to kill him. I'm thinking that the ending of DD1 made a small change to how the cycle worked, causing the 'Great will' to maintain the world in different way without a true Senechal, which in tern meant that Rothais, who would have otherwise been a Senechal, reached a similar position in the world but didn't drain his will to uphold order world, and thus had enough will left to give His Godsbane to the player by the time he arrived.

Best way to increase the affinity is by visiting the barber and changing the appearance of your pawn every now and then. When they start blushing while you talk to them it will trigger the human form ending. I like how people can't wrap their head around the fact that this game is not a "parallel" to dd1 (which is understandable, cause multiverses and shit splitting and reforming etc is incredibly confusing) - it takes place in the exact same world. There's a reason the quest for the Seafloor Shrine is called "Convergence" - even if the events of dd1 had occurred in an alternate world - this is no longer the case, it has converged.

Afaik, when you stab yourself with the godsbane in DDDA, you're doing that game's version of "breaking the cycle", although there are theories that's still part of the cycle itself. Both games are about the value of free will and the importance of people taking hold of their own destinies. They're simply 2 different interpretations and takes on the matter. Personally, while I think there are parallels that you can use to relate them together, they are fundamentally different world setups: In DD2, you don't even know if the Pathfinder is a former arisen as DDDA and there is no foundation for you to become the next pathfinder once you defeat the dragon. In DD2 there's also a new game. Like the comment above, who's to say that killing the Pathfinder isn't a part of the cycle in this game as well? I think you should see it more like both games' true endings are your arisen ending the cycle. Except there's somewhat of a continuity in DDDA because when you go to a NG+, you happen upon a what if scenario where your previous arisen never godsbaned himself.

for the the beginning, that is not how it begins, it begins with the dream, and the dragon talking to you, what is important is what the dragon said, that if you want to brake the bonds of fate you must give up being the arisen and give up your life (hinting how you can go for the true ending). you must not ignore all this ditales and ffs in the first game YOU DIDN'T BRAKE THE CYCLE, and excluding all the clues from the first game, the second game prooves that the cycle didn't brake in the first game, when you stab yourself in the first game you fall in the Brine (as the sineshal), when you do the same in the second game you fall in the brine however you fall in as not the sineshal or as the arisen since you stubing yourself while on top of the dragon you breake the heart of the dragon, and start braking the chain, when you fall in to the sea, the pathfinder talks to you and shows you the unmoored world, where you end up defeating the pathfinder, and finally destroyed the cycle. also i should mention all the other digitals. first. the pathfinder is the so called watching one, by the sealed sineshal, the mad shoveren. second. the pathfinder IS THE BRINE. third. the sineshal is sealed by the pathfinder in the everfall. forth. in the first game the pawn just inhabits the body of the arisen, while the soul of the arisen probably talks with the pathfinder when the body fell into the sea, just like you do in the second game. fifth. the gods bane is confirmed to not destroy the arisens soul when stubed by himself, from the second game. sixth. since there canot be more then one sineshal, and the current sineshal is sealed, that part of the sycle is excluded in the second game. seventh. the pathfinder acts as a shineshal too, because the real one is sealed. eighth. the sinechal is also known as the world forged. now that there is no pathfinder and the sineshal is still sealed, there is no one waching over the world, the cycle is broken, so the dangers that where keped away by the cicle will endanger the world again, just like before the cycle was put in place. well there is also the the great will, but there is not enough details about it. also to mention that the thing that ended many world that the pathfinder mentioned was not what happened in the unmoored world, the pathfinder just wanted the arisen to trust that braking the cycle is a bad idea. i really hope that we will het more info in the dlc what is probably coming.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding that right, I'm not sure if that's the writers' way of saying that the arisen has died, or if they weren't going for that at all. I know that in DD1, the arisen dies. And as there are some similarities between DD1 and DD2, just with no Senechal this time, then I'm not sure if the arisen likely had died in DD2, like they did in DD1 or not?

@AB-ql3dz Ай бұрын
@@Luke-rr4tq Unlike DD1, we don't see the arisen die and the pawn does not merge with its body. Capcom wouldn't be shy about showing our Arisen's body if they was truly dead. I do agree with a suggestion I've read before. To me it seems the Greater Will and Oblivion/Brine are the same thing, just two sides of the same coin. The Greater Will does create worlds only to see them destroyed again and again. To solve this problem it does create the circle because it can't see the world without itself. "Where there is light there is also shadow." The power to create anything and everything at will can't come without consequences. The Arisen in the True Ending removes the Greater Will from the equation and thus oblivion is removed too. The world can start to heal itself.

@MasonLopez
@MasonLopez Ай бұрын
It's open ended. I'm thinking the Great Will is the entity that kicked off the systems in both games. In DD1, we see the Great Will start the Seneschal chain to see how that works. In this game, we see the Great Will try a Pathfinder that keeps a more controlled loop in place. So I'm not sure if Pathfinder = Seneschal as much as Pathfinder fulfills the role of "God" in a the same way Seneschal fulfills the role of "God". DD1 has a new God replacing the old God, and DD2 shows a single God maintaining all loops with an intense desire to always exist to see the next loop. Both have problems, both trample Free Will, and so both get dismantled by the player by the game's credits. I imagine a DD3 with a new version of the cycle, and possibly an attempt to finally end ALL attempts at these cycles. We keep breaking the cycle, but then a new cycle comes along anyway. Won't it be fun to finally break THAT one.

Personally, I ascribe to the theory that the Watching One isn't the Seneschal, but rather the being that stands above the Seneschals. It's hinted and implied in the first game (particularly in Dark Arisen and in Savan's dialogue) that such an entity exists, overseeing a number of worlds with a number of Seneschals. In all likelihood, I believe that Rothais ascended to the position of Seneschal and then rejected the cycle, causing the Watching One to step in personally. A big detail that I don’t see talked about enough is that the Arisen alone was not enough. It took the will of countless individuals- man, pawn, and Arisen- to face down the Pathfinder. Rothais literally bestows us with his own will in the form of the Godsbane, entrusting us to finish what he began. Even then, it is only made whole by the effort of men fight against the yoke of the cycle, forging the Godsbane in the blood of dragons using the knowledge gleaned only through the collection and forging of the shattered wills of Arisen past. Unlike the first game, our victory is not ours alone- it is the culmination of tge wills of innumerable souls straining against the chains of the ever-turning wheel across untold spans of eternity. It is only in the foundation laid by their wills that our own was able to take root.

@@thebigenchilada678 It does a few things actually. Rothais' throne is the Seneschal's throne from DA1. Rothais pulls the Godsbane from himself to bestow us with it- something we also see the Seneschal do in the first game. The Pathfinder, aside from going by a different title. Also seems to have an entirely different outlook on the cycle and the role of its keeper. Then there's the commentary of the old nutter at Harve- a former arisen himself, one which, should a certain ending be considered, likely made it closer to breaking the cycle than any other before us. Dragon's Dogma has never been overly forthright with its thematic and metaphysical concepts, but they are there. I'm not going to pretend the writing is better than it is- it leaves an awful lot of holes- but it also gives some puzzle pieces to those willing to look for them.

Technically no. While you can stop the fog from spreading, there is still a rest limit. Most people have said you can only rest 12 times before the game tells you that you can no longer rest anymore (I've seen screenshots of it). This does eventually mean that while you aren't on a time limit if you beat all of the bosses, you will have to finish the game eventually since mobs generally will not respawn back since you can't rest and the time of day does not advance despite the sky getting lighter and darker. You get plenty of time but not unlimited time.

@@superxmario128mobs do respawn back and fairly quickly. I've fought the same dullahans 2-3 times between rests just by running around the map finding chests. You have limited rests and time seems to stop but seems like enemy respawn time works differently.

@@td984 @td984 Not in my playthrough. Large chunks of the map remained empty for hours until I finally went to bed to usually heal the pawns I liked in my party and didn't want to switch them out to fully heal them. I pushed through with full heal elixirs for awhile. Mini bosses certainly don't respawn unless you do. It's mainly because the in game time doesn't really progress unless you sleep at that point. I had a pawn team that I rolled with for about 6 hours only for the game to tell me I only traveled with them for 1 day (the day I rested) when I finally sent them off.

I'm a bit dumb, in the 'true ending', is the Arisen dead afterwards? I have no desire to sacrifice myself, lol. I played a bit of the unmoored world and wasn't too interested and if I'm sacrificing myself, that's not my thing.

Man this ending was so much more disappointing compared to the first game. The first game had epic climactic endings and reveals. I thought here, you'd become the next pathfinder, and THEN maybe uncover something new behind this role instead of just suiciding again like in the last game. But instead, you just simply become a Sovran for beating the dragon, and you're meant to accept it and move on. But then you break this cycle and uncovering the unmoored world. But you realize this was a mistake and you should save the people again by ending THIS cycle instead, thus killing the pathfinder in dragon form and ending the unmoored world and Brine from Existance. The Brine seems to be a creation or a part of the Pathfinder himself and limiting and hindering people's live to this one continent in order to "watch" them. But with this guy gone, who's going to be the next pathfinder? Cuz obviously they're appointed by the Great Will, and the Great Will ain't going anywhere. Heck, they can just recreate this whole cycle again if they wanted. We didn't really STOP anything. IDK, I just feel really shortchanged with this game's ending. I was hoping for more....I hope to God DLC comes out that explains more of everything post-game-wise, instead of just adding some random side-content grind.

That- *I will say, isn’t a great ending in the context of the overall story* The idea of continuing the endless chain of infinite worlds via a cycle of death, rebirth and ascension is _much_ better in my opinion. Seeing it play out *again* would have been great to see, rather than seeing the final end to it all in the sequel
@joehutchcraft1675
@joehutchcraft1675 Ай бұрын
I whole heartedly agree, the despair of knowing that you will be replaced by yet another Arisen to continue the endless loop and creation of more Dragons from failed Arisen and Daemons from enraged failures makes a more compelling story. Also the fact that your pawn continues it in "your" stead make it dark af.

For me the original ending was far better because you get to fight your past self and pawn with all the powers And skills you acquired as them almost as if you're making your own final boss that Was super unique more game should do this more. But the dragon's dog my 2 ending We currently have seems very weak and meaningless because we are still repeating the cycle. When we go to our next play through it there's no pay off. Besides skills and items you acquired during your first run. Just just repeating the cycle.12:25

This game is a lie. Alternative universe seems like an excuse for them to simply create a reboot. Too many steps back in this game. less versatility in combat due to less skills being equipable. And i missed the gigantus fight because the damn thing was too far away and suddenly triggered when i was all the way fighting Medusa. But even after the fight i was outside and not allowed to teleport to any of my portcrystals on the volcanic island, making me miss the whole fight. The game doesn't even warn you that there is a point of no return. Also would it have killed them to give us a mount and a saddle bag so we don't have to do so much inventory managment every minute?

I didn’t like the end game content one it’s not like DD1 where you can stay there in the end game and farm all you want respawning the enemies na the game forces you to go to NG+ which doesn’t even give you a reward in DD1 you got a reward and you also got the UR dragon rift stone which let you fight him whenever DD2 has such a cool looking enemy with that final giant dragon but you don’t get to fight it atleast they should had turned it into something like the UR dragon shit I would had been happy with that but the devs did so many things wrong and the game felt rushed with how OP I got so fast I honestly thought that them giving me all that gear that fast was because the end game content would be hard but nahh Honestly all the game did was make me go back to DD1 😂I prefer DD1 specially for the end game ever fall and ur dragon I don’t mention Bitter black as end game because its a DLC and not part of the base game plus I go there at lvl 1 😂 hopefully DD2 DLC brings more enemies and not just re skin version of old enemies and a tougher challenge

The story for both games are ass. They both lean too heavily on this idea that the greatest act of free will is to essentially become a martyr and sends the message self-sacrifice is the only way to make a difference. What happened to hard work, perseverance, ingenuity and cunning? Dragon's Dogma isn't a dark fantasy story, its not Dark Souls. It has the room to allow for mor variance in how to break or continue the cycle. Its completely uninspired the story they chose to tell.

what do you mean, in dragons dogma 2 the player breaks the cycle, which leads to the impending doom happen which in dd2 appears to be the brine devouring the world, however the pawn and arisen have gathered so much will that even the pawn has a will of its own now and with that they procceeded to kill literal GOD that apparently is what was actually keeping the cycle going since they instead of sacrificing themselves or stopping the brine so the world could thrive, just made the arisen/dragon instead, then somehow by killing god itself the arisen frees the world from the cycle, its a literal happy ending

I get it. I do. But as a player who puts in so much time into their character and having their pawn by their side the entire time, knowing they both die in the true ending, regardless of the good they are doing for the world, was heartbreaking. I literally cried when my pawn made his sacrifice. It’s similar to completing the true ending in Nier Automata: I just feel… empty 🥲
