Back in DD1, they were already trying to make you feel for your pawn more than the NPCs. For most people, their main pawns are the reflection of their ideal partners, friends, or love ones. People already feel attached to their main pawns since the beginning. On top of that is the bond they developed over the course of their journey. DD2 took that idea and made it far greater than it already was. They even hide the fact that your pawn now has hidden affinity based on how you treated them. That also influences their interactions with you and the true ending cutscene. This is the greatest companion system ever created with a fitting narrative to go along with it. It really made you feel for something that’s supposed to be a disposable tool. And if you are a DD1 vet with a stable main pawn? You will love them even more.

This absolutely feels like it was written from the perspective of the Arisen's main pawn after the events of the post game where they got their free will. Starts off in a world "without hope, without pain", like they're searching for the Arisen. The world is saved, but the pawn is directionless. First time they make their own choices. All they have is "I'm alive, I will make my way." Like a human. Like their master. But at the end, it's "See me, hear me, take my hand. I will follow you if you will follow me. I'm not alone here." Feels like they reunited with the Arisen. Except this time on more equal footing. Okay yeah they're probably both dead, but let me dream, okay? This song is beautiful. Couldn't be more fitting if it tried.

Just finished the game today and when this song played and the entire sequence before it, it had just broke me and I was crying for a game for the first time in forever. I had built a bond with my pawn seeing funny moments, frustrating moments, and impressive moments with the team work that had occurred during my game. One of my absolute favorite moments in this game was something my pawn had said out of the blue. She was asked by another pawn "you have more scars than the usual pawn, your journey must be hard fought" and she responded "each scar is a memory shared with my master, all of which I treasure". That one quote is what ran through my mind when, at the final scene, she said that she had gain a will, lesser than my own. Little does she know, that the memories that I shared with her is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.
@UltraHorseBoots8 ай бұрын
I wish the game could have pushed it's theme better throughout the game, rather than backloading it all into monologues on the back of dragons, while I do appreciate the "eureka" moment when entering NG+ and realizing that the opening quote is quite literally spelling out the narrative theme to you once you have the knowledge of the story told. It's all about "will" leading to "conviction" to granting the power needed to cause a miracle as grant as cutting your entire world out of the stagnate cycle the Great Will put upon you. I think the theme could have been better realized if the main story presented more tests of conviction leading up to the fight with the dragon. But I do think it was cool when entering the unmoored world and you have a chance to talk to these people the script of cycle presented as villains and now with everyone able to talk freely in the absence of this cycle in this ruined world you realize that just like with the Arisen, everyone has been testing their own convictions to try their best to create a better future in a world that has been prevented from having a future. Dena just wanted to create a kingdom for her son to prosper as king. Phaesus is already aware of the cycle and has been dedicating his entire life to trying to break it through any means necessary in a world where he should be divorced from agency of the cycle as a mere mortal and not an arisen. It's an awful world where not even pawns are allowed to become human anymore, like they could in DD1. They just turn into dragons once they develop willpower and the game as a mechanic encourages you to essentially lobotomize their pawns in the rift (usually by tossing them into the brine which you now know is your direct enemy.) Saving everyone in the unmoored world and creating a new world free of the cycle for them to live in is a miracle built off the backs of all the leading players in the world. It's only by the will and conviction of the arisen, the leaders of bakbattahl, the leaders of Vernworth, and of course even your pawn (who even gets to create a miracle all on their own if you didn't kill the talos fast enough and your pawn gets to pilot it against one of the brine beasts by moonglit tower.) And I just think to cap that journey off with this song is just overall something beautiful. I think the game still has many flaws, frustratingly alot of similar flaws to the original. I think the overall narrative was rather poor, and the rules of the unmoored world unclear (and also underutilized, I think the game could have better served giving the player more main story quests to do before the end within the unmoored world, if at the very least to better explore the themes of the game and give more time to interacting with these characters who were forced to be 1 dimensional due to the nature of the cycle they were initially trapped in.) But I think when you take the time to really reflect on the theme of conviction, it does lead to greater appreciation to what little story we got. Conviction is truly human will that reaches its greatest power, and the conviction of this game's world was truly great indeed to grant us the first actual win over the Great Will in the series. (Unless DDO did something I guess)

You know, it's funny. I didn't really think I had much attachment to the world of DD2. But as I watched the true ending, saw the world my Arisen fought so hard for flourishing despite his absence, even as the characters whose lives he touched quietly mourned him... it got to me. Sven being a kind and just ruler, honestly far better as a Sovran than I would've been. Wilhemina finally letting go of the past. Hugo staring up at the stars as a free and honest man. And my "beloved" turned out to be Sara the blacksmith of all people. I was shocked at first, I didn't do her quest until very late in the game. But in retrospect, it made sense; I changed her life. And her escort mission was always fairly short, so I always made time for it. We went on so many little walks together... of course she would miss me. And my Pawn. My brave boy. To learn what it means to be free, to have a will of your own, and then to give that up anyway of your own volition... your sacrifice was the most noble of them all. I didn't think much of the story of this game until I beat it. And then I realized how deeply it had wormed its way into my heart.

I think the reason a lot of us feel so deeply about our Main Pawns is because they're not only created in the shape of who we desire the most as well as our ideal companion but also the game reinforces that they have no will, they're an empty vessel that follows you around, but your main pawn is special, they're the one who the player created and as such we hold a soft spot for them. The ending only makes it better because it feels like our beloved companion is finally becoming Human, only to sacrifice themselves, sacrificing the little time they had a Will for us "Oh Master... Such joy I feel. You have given me a gift beyond measure: a fledgling will that burns within my breast. Yet for your sake, I would fain relinquish all I have... All that I am. Master.."

this song hit's even harder if you 100% the whole story. seeing all the npc's you've helped through out your journey alive and living their lives. and them remembering your arisen and their pawn and finally, finally the last scene in where your chosen love interest is standing on a field looking beyond the horizon just makes it better. DD's Story is actually really sad if you think about it, the Arisen are nothing more than the watcher's pawn's in where they are nothing more than a means of sick entertainment for their sick game of never ending cycle. not to mention all of the people the arisen and their pawn encounters, have already had their fate sealed thanks to the watcher controlling everyone, it's only when the arisen's intervention that broke them free from a linear destiny.

I don't know what people are talking about when they claim the OST is bad. It's much more dynamic and is also has a lot more variety.
@vedrisca7 ай бұрын
I think it comes down to the audio mixing and mastering of the OST. On paper End of the Struggle is about the same as the one in DD1 (sans electric guitar, but I don't think the electric guitar was used until the Cockatrice fight), but then you'll notice that the brass section feels a bit more tinny (they employ more trumpets for the main melody than trombones and French horns; DD1's version uses trumpets as only an accompaniment and the composition is more well-rounded with the drums having more bass and reverb from being recorded in a concert hall). DD2's OST feels like it was recorded in a studio without a live orchestra, which might be the case since it was in development for 5 years (starting 2019, releasing 2024). Quarantine would have made the logistics of a live orchestra impossible at the time.

I wonder how many people are wondering about Dragon's lot in the perpetual cycles of Dragon's Dogma. I mean, think about the Dragon. It has wings. Wings are probably the most universal symbols of freedom, because the open skies defy the drawn borders across lands. The Dragon should not have to care about anything limiting it, and yet... here it is, here it always is. Always causing calamity, always choosing a champion to slay it or be slain by it. When you fly to the field of battle where you and the Dragon would decide the fate of the world, the Dragon muses on the world's and it's own natures. It knows how this world works and it wishes for the world to end, why else guide the Arisen to thinking about a world "not shrouded by false benevolence"? The truth I think is; the Dragon is as much, if not even more enslaved by Dragon's Dogma than the rest of the world. It want's something real to happen, something free from Dragon's Dogma. The fact that the Dragon can freely fly over brine infested sea, yet cannot fly across it to anywhere else but towards the battle field, is the cruelest joke of all. The mightiest of beasts, reduced to a barking dog on a leash that's tied around it's very mind. And yet, even enslaved as the Dragon is, even it knows what freedom is and it desires it. If it can't change fate, then Maybe the Arisen could.
@Makenshi1797 ай бұрын
Well said, that's exactly it. The Dragon tells the Arisen that they want the same thing... to break the cycle and see the truth. The Dragon was a tool created to be a part of the cycle... The Dragon is, quote, "oblivion". It is the counterpart to creation, destruction. For the cycle to loop and start again, either the Arisen must fail to protect the world either the Dragon/destroyer of worlds must be slain. Either way the loop keeps repeating with a new Arisen and new Dragon. But when the Arisen strayed from the path to see the truth, and killed the Pathfinder/Watcher who had his own Dragon to help him destroy that failure of a world "off its tracks"... then that sad end was "unwritten", and there was a happy ending. "Normal" sea has appeared without the kraken, and that old man could sail to the sea as he always wanted. Now I wonder... what is on the other side of the sea?

I think it's likely Pathfinder stepped in to fill the role of Seneschal, but he himself didn't fully understand what that meant, so instead of finding someone to become arisen and succeed him, he kept finding someone to become arisen and *rule the land*. Rothais also mentions that the one who watches (pathfinder?) kept sending arisen to try and kill him, meaning Pathfinder was at one point likely trying to restore the cycle to its original state by having someone succeed Rothais.

To my dearest Pawn, Luna Cordelia. Throughout this life of loss, gain and renewal, you have been a constant. You are timeless, unchanging despite the endless passage. We've traveled Gransys, Vermund, Battahl and realms beyond hand-in-hand taking the uncertain but inevitable future head-on with shifting emotion, but one exception that _is_ certain is you. Your heart was the first that beat in stead of mine when I lost it, and when I re-gained it, you were the first to feel its thrum as merit of your undying loyalty... yet even after attaining freedom, a will of your own, you stayed. You stayed despite the pain, the deaths, the tragedies that would befall us. You'd give everything you were with a smile, and it took me a decade to foolishly realize that you are a piece of me. You are my blade, my companion, my heart. Mine, as I am yours. I hope I get to spend another decade with you, but even if I do not, you will always be there for _me._ You are forever. -Your loving Master, Hebe Afaenia.

Dragon's Dogma 1 and 2 both sure have their ups and downs in terms of having a consistent narrative, but it simply cannot be overstated how great the theming is, and how the endgame is always awesome, thought-provoking, hopeful and yet utterly heartbreaking. It's strange really. I loved this game and of course as before I love the pawns (especially mine, naturally!) but I didn't think I'd end up caring so much about even most of the major NPCs. But in the end, I did feel something for all of these people in their own ways coming together, setting aside their now clearly petty grievances, and resolving to try and survive in a senseless world that was dying before their eyes. I was happy to see them all again. DD2 got me attached to its characters in a way that most RPGs and games in general can't, and that's worth a lot. It's so cool too because it's also just incredibly rare to actually play and experience a doomsday scenario like that in a game, and it really feels consequential and changes everything.

To the people complaining about the soundtrack. The music is fine. Even good. The only real problem with it is that it's following in the massive footsteps of the first game's soundtrack. Did you really expect them to be able to surpass it? That soundtrack was forged in tier 3 wyrmfire.

The story overall is very okay-ish, The political intrigue fell kinda flat for me. But damn the true ending was really a surprise to me and that ending was really good. Really made me realize how much I like my pawn and got attached to her and I'm just going in NG+ just to goof around more with her. I'd love to see a story more focused on your adventures, the obstacles in your path to fight the dragon and how your pawn and yourself change because of it all. How you as a character/player shows resolve and will to go forth and fight the dragon despite adversity all while your pawn develops said will because of you. I believe that's where DD should focus its attention story wise if we (I hope) ever get a DD3 or an expansion for DD2...
@TheStraightestWhitest7 ай бұрын
I think the reason it hits so hard is precisely because it flew under the radar. We were focusing on everything and everyone other than our own main pawn. The story being meh for the most part makes the conclusion better. It's an actually well executed version of our true friend having been with us the entire time without us noticing. For us it was just going through the motions. For them, it was everything. They cherished it so much that it literally altered them, gave them free will. So when their first choice with that new will is to sacrifice themselves for our cause, it cuts deep because that's the first time you stop to think about their perspective.

Judging from the scene, our pawn was crushed by the dragon/pathfinder, and your body was penetrated by the thingy coming out of the dragon's heart, so chances are both did not make it. Although theoretically, as long as the Arisen lives, their pawn should be immortal. But who knows, I'm also coping to see us and our pawn reunited in the new world for the DLC to join the old man at the beach side for a new adventure :).

I often see people complain about the thin narrative of dragons dgma, but I think that is exactly the beauty of this game. It doesnt force a strong narrative upon the player, but instead makes you slowly fall in love with this world without even noticing it until the credits roll. This is not a game to watch a well crafted story. This is a game you experience.

to be fair, Dragon's Dogma has always been more about getting strong and defeat the dragon more than about a compelling mainstory that leads up to it. You could skip almost the entire main quest if you knew what to do ahead of time.
