The funniest part of this is that this tfs special is the closest to an official dub of the original special we've every gotten. The original movie was a bonus feature in a Dragon Ball Kinect game and (I assume) Funimation and/or Toei didn't wanna bother dubbing it. So this DBZ Abridged version is the most professional official dub we have.

Chilled is Frieza's ancestor. After Bardock beat him, before he died, he ordered his men to warn his family to beware of the legendary Super Saiyan. This is where Frieza's fear of the legend and his hatred for the saiyans stemmed from.

Yeah so in the "Real" version of this, Bardock was send back in time by Friezas attack, where he becomes a super saiyan to defeat Friezas distant ancestor. Friezas ancestor on his deathbed tells his men to tell his lineage about the super saiyan with incredible powers, and that is how the legend of the super saiyan is born that Frieza and Vegeta know. At least according to this non-canon special.

@@WD_GASTER_ The Broly movies and this one are completely different "timelines". In the Bardock special, Broly doesn't exist. Thankfully, since this whole "Oh no THAT super saiyan is just the normal one, the LEGENDARY super saiyan is this completely different thing!" that Broly tried to do was pretty much the most stupid thing that Dragonball, no anime in general has done to this day. I can't even put into words just how stupid DBZ Broly and literally everything about him was, his story, this really, really, really stupid "legendary" super saiyan bullshit, his complete lack of character. God am I glad that this Broly wasn't canon. All of DBZ Broly was low tier DeviantArt level writing, it's a crime that someone got actually paid for making a story THIS stupid.

@@EskChan19 Yeah, a nuclear blast sending 1 of a billion monkeys back to the past for no reason is much better thought out than the "stupid" Broly movie for sure. The Bardock stuff doesn't even contradict the Broly stuff my guy, the stories don't intersect in any meaningful way, besides the Broly movie being vaguely related to a legend that existed before Broly was born, so you're just malding at a movie that has nothing to do with anything for no reason.

So, there's a "prequel" to this special that TFS also abridged (Bardock: Father of Goku) that explains some of the things like Bardock's psychic powers and the events leading up to Freeza blowing up the planet, which is referenced at the start of this special. Lord Chilled is supposed to be a distant ancestor, so this like a thousand years in the past. I never watched the original, I think it was only included in one of the video games iirc. What's implied is that Bardock is actually the original Legendary Super Saiyan and the father of the modern Saiyans. It also "explains" why the Freeza Force underlings are named after fruits and why the Ginyu Force does their little dances and poses.

So for sure none of this is canon Chilled is implied to be an ancestor of frieza, much older than just their direct father The spuge is implied to be the healing pod juices Bardock is implied to be the original super saiyan that starts the legend and sparks frieza fear of it And planet vegeta isnt the saiyans home planet. When planet sadala was destroyed they took over this planet and named it vegeta.

In the “lore” of the movie, Bardock got sent way back into the past, and Chilled is an ancestor of all villains with similar “cool” names. But it’s a movie without “super” in the title, so not canon. That’s it.

TFS have said that they preferred it that Bardock is a bad guy. He a warrior of a race of genocidal killers. They arent fans of the dub trying to make him seem heroic and a good person. So they go out of their way to show that he is still a killer who has slaughtered planets
