Episode 82
Dragon Warrior II (also known as Dragon Quest 2) is notorious for its difficulty and is often regarded as the most challenging game in the series! Despite all of the difficulty, this sequel features a ton of improvements over the original. The world is bigger, the monsters have more variety, and the strategies needed are more interesting. If you're a fan of turn-based RPGs, you shouldn't miss this one!
After the massive success of the original Dragon Quest game, developer Chunsoft certainly wanted to make a sequel. Luckily the lead designer of the first game, Yuji Horii, had a ton of ides for a sequel! Many of the original team members returned to make the new game, and their experience helped make the new game even better.
So how did this game make it to North America, and why wasn't it as popular here as it was in Japan? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* SECRET TRICKS to make TON of money! Start the game with the best equipment!
* MAPS for all dungeons and the overworld!
* DETAILED MONSTER DATA! Know your enemy's weakness!
* How to ELIMINATE ALL RANDOM ENCOUNTERS! A secret trick that's better than Game Genie!
* Understand HOW THE GAME WORKS! Damage formulas, success percentages - its all in here!
* SECRETS of the LOTTERY! Get rich quick!
* HOW to defeat EVERY BOSS... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

The series is the number one reason that RPGs, and especially JRPGs, are the genre of video games I've invested by far the most time into over my 42 years of life. I had all 4 of the "Dragon Warrior" games on the NES as a kid, and although 4 was probably my favorite, I definitely played the second game a lot as a kid. I never imported 5, 6 or 7, but I remember picking up 8 on the PS2 when I was in my 20s and the clear parallels to 4 (Draconian race/gear instead of Zenithian, among other smaller bits) and the gameplay elements lifted from 3 (6 sacred orbs to gather over the first half of the game) reminded me so much of my childhood, it was an excellent dose of nostalgia. In more recent years, I've played XI multiple times since it's basically a love letter to the entire series.

I wanted this for my birthday when I was a teenager. My mom said to call around and see how much it was. Every place had it for launch price, though Meijer told me they had it for $20. When we got there, the price was $50 or whatever launch was. My mom was furious, got the manager, and told me and my friend to go look at the games while she went full Karen way before that was an overused term. I don't know what she said, but we walked out of their with DWII for $20!

When I was a kid playing this. Really hard adventure and all sure, I was super duper into it. Going around on the boat and all that..... eventually I landed on the Original Map and the song started playing. I just stopped, my child eyes open wide. "I, Know this place." and just stood there listening to the old song again, remembering the adventure I had all that time ago in the first game. I started to explore the land, remembered all the 'secrets' of monster spawns etc. not all the same of course... but seeing how much has changed..... villages destroyed and lost.... villages that grew, etc. It was such a heart warming moment in video games for me. If I ever get money to have a game made and stuff, I would make sure to recreate that in a sequel.

THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! DQ2 often gets overlooked in the series due to its early-installment weirdness and the and allegedly-weak plot, so it's great to see this game getting some love, recognition, and the record being set straight on it.

I never could find the thief key. I searched every step of that area never walking through the wall hundreds of times. I literally grinded gold orcs for maybe a hundred hours until almost max level out of desperate meandering and was astonished to learn the door unlocking spell and being able to progress through the game. My first jaw drop moment in a videogame. I was young enough that the clown in the basement, the game intro demons, the idea of an evil land at the end, and that a bad guy having a castle you could go into were all so spooky. I also had, like, 3-4 magic water flying cloths. Never won the best prize on the lotto. Wasting an ungodly amount of time getting and selling and re-getting magic armor and thinking I was clever. I wanted so bad for the charms of the different pseudo elements to do ANYTHING in the game that I started to hallucinate that maybe they did, and tried to get them and the 2 allies out of different orders for absolutely no solid reasoning. I could get chills watching the game intro with the characters marching. I was amused so much that if I restarted and gave the characters each others names that their names would change when I found them. The last boss being a 2 stage boss blew my mind, and then again when I finally understood the game cover art. The travel doors being in secluded shrines felt legit ominous and mystical to me. You knew you were in some not supposed to have specialness when you found and got through extra damaging damage tiles. I probably played too much dragon warrior 2. Did anyone else try the mirror on the other dog first.... just in case...? I was also convinced that dragon's bane lowered damage of breath attacks.

I first got into this series in middle school by going to my neighbors house and watching his father play this game for hours upon hours, and all I could do was sit there and watch, just being blown away by each and every battle and place you visited. The game seemed pretty fair until you got to the Cave To Rhone, and that's when all hell broke loose, with the Attackbot's and invisible holes which dropped you into the basement, and each step you fought Horks, lol. Thank you for the share and memories ... and I think I'm ready to go and grind through the game after all these years!

8:30 What people don't know is that Castle Moonbrooke is actually the fourth castle the king had built in that swamp. The first one sank into the swamp, as did the second. The third one burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. The fact that the fourth one stayed up is a testament to the strength of Castle Moonbrooke, in that even after being sacked by monsters, it remains standing. EDIT: 10:17 Looks like you already beat me to the joke. I knew I should've waited to see if you'd referenced it, but I just couldn't resist. Oh, well. I'll leave it here as food for the algorithm.

Loved both the DW/FF series back in the day. Gotta remember too, that most NES players were kids, and the games retailed at $60 (around $130 in today's dollar), and parents weren't opt to buy a new game every few months (for me it was Christmas and birthdays...until I got a paper route and bought my own 😉) so with FF coming out first, DW2 took a backshelf.

1:35:20 It's really cool that the monsters have both spells and skills in this game. Please don't forget, you can change the Prince and the Princess's names to whatever you want. Highlight your save file, then press left or right and the A button. The Mysterious Hat actually inspired Satoshi Tajiri to create the Pokemon trading system in the original Pokemon on the GameBoy.

I like to think you can find gremlins that saved anywhere in the world really, creatures that have lived in dark areas for long times or been asleep, and a wizard could go around finding or summoning gremlins that happens to save right inside that castle long ago before the castle was even built, and in that way able to essentially teleport in there

I absolutely love the Dragon Warrior games, and have since I got my copy of the original Dragon Warrior free with a subscription to Nintendo Power magazine! I always struggled with this one out of the first four (never got to play any of the others until they were ported to Android - didn't own any of the systems except NES and Wii). I used the Game Genie sometimes for my playthroughs, but it's cool to see some of the little tricks that were in the game. Currently, I'm working my way through DQ XI S (slowly, as I don't get to play too often - two kids and two pets), and I'm also trudging through creating a Dragon Warrior RPG based on D&D 5e. Going back through old games can give me some ideas when I get stuck. Excellent guide!

I was so pleased with myself at finishing the first Dragon Warrior game I couldn't wait for the second. I had to admit I was met with some disappointments, such as the main character not using magic, and weapons and armor being in the item inventory which ate up space, but I struggled through this game. Since I did not have a strategy guide like I did with the first there were many things I had to figure out on my own, and just wandering around try find what to go next accomplished some level grinding. I still have my copy with the first quest still saved on it from the very first time I brought it home and turned it on.

Eventually you get to some enemies that randomly kill half of your party in a turn. That's where I stopped. Maybe I'll go back again, but ugh.

I had almost the same experience. Dragon warrior 1 was the first game I ever finished and I felt like a true badass. I had to have part 2 and then 3 and then 4 ! I still remember the excitement of getting part 7. Dq is a big part of my life

Man, I really missed out with these games as a kid. I would see them in store and yet still go for more "mainstream" games. Games played by my mates, KNOWING the quality of the game. Or even trying it myself in-store at the testing units. But I'd never see any of the DQ series anywhere other than the shelf for sale at the same price as games like Zelda or MegaMan and Mario (That's AU$70 to AU$80 just for referance). Heh, well, at least now I can enjoy watching these playthrus and know that there's nothing skipped/missed. Cheers for bringing these classics to us like this, as usual my man.

Man, I hope one day I'll finally get to play all the Dragon Quest games, I've only beaten 11, but I know that these games are all amazing Thanks for always making our weekends incredible, my man! 🐕 I love how the games must be released on weekends, because when they were released on Tuesdays, nobody went to school or work, so they demanded the games be released on Saturdays

Know it's not Dragon Quest, or part 2, but for GTA:SA I took 5 days off after the release date/night and played for 7 days straight, only stopping to take naps, eat, etc.

@@The16bithero I remember recruiting my 8yr old brother (he's a lot younger than me) for GTA5 after showing parents what we were doing. All we did was take trucks offroading to impossible places (or try to), fly the air vehicles, and of course jump out of heli's with no parachute. That was his favorite and we'd both laugh till crying. On other hand, he introduced me to Minecraft which I never would have picked up without him. That's a good game too.

Cool! Nice to see the strats for the original version. I only just finished the GBC version of Dragon Quest II last week. The final cave was more frustrating than challenging though with all the traps and dead ends.

Nice! I got this for Xmas in 1990. I got all the way to the end of it but I was never able to beat the last boss, especially after having to run through that boss gauntlet just to reach him in the first place. Looking forward to seeing how you tackle that.
