Dragons' Den

3 жыл бұрын

Next to face the Dragons was Cheshire-based entrepreneur Faluh Shah, born and raised in India, Shah explained that she had moved to the UK in 1988 but had always missed the snacks of her home country and so went about creating Howdah Snacks, a range of traditional Indians snack free from artificial colours and flavours.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Her fate was sealed before she even walked in. She had nothing concrete for orders (despite being told to treat potential orders) and she stepped her foot in by saying "world food aisle" which gave it the speciality vibe. There are plenty of Indians in the UK, more so than Caribbean, and the medium salary earned is a lot higher. Whether or not the product would sell depends on marketing. Pubs did have curry nights every week... a lot of non-Indian people in the UK regularly eat Indian food. So I didn't quite understand why the dragons were claiming few people would potentially be interested. Sweet Chilli flavour snacks is very common these days, based upon Thai cuisine and there isn't a huge Thai population here.

Does that guy not know what a letter of intent is? Normally it is used to begin negotiations on a certain deal or exclusivity so that the vendor won’t go and negotiate with competitors before they reach agreement . A contract is a different thing altogether , that’s were the numbers come in and of course it can fall down during those negotiations but to say a letter of intent is useless is incorrect . No one agrees a letter of intent on product such as this and has all the numbers , margins and profits worked into the LOI otherwise you might as well go straight to contract . Not saying the product is a winner but it must have some legs if a major company has started negotiations via an LOI , what is the point of signing an LOI if you have no intention of negotiating .

@@mrdiavel4807 Not true. The LOI is an offer with contingencies and the numbers are detailed as are the contingencies. I think all are getting confused between expression of interest, letter of intent and contract. The first two are non binding while the last is. A LoI will necessarily have quantity, price, likely date of order, duration of delivery, etc. and typically all negotiations would have been complete before issuing LoI. What she had shown is expression of interest which will not spell out any details or specifics, but just one party is interested to buy or bid from the other.
@christschool
@christschool 2 жыл бұрын
I deal in LOI's as part of my job. Typically, they contain terms of the final sales agreement. They will say, I will buy this amount for this much and under these terms. The LOI will have contingencies in it that both parties agree to and if after the due diligence period everything is successful, the final sales agreement will be signed. These investors know exactly what an LOI is. What Nick Jenkins was looking for that should be in an LOI was exactly correct. I believe it is you that doesn't understand what an LOI actually is.

I don't get the dragons. They've invested in snack businesses before. The dragons once invested in a crisp business which didn't create any new flavours. I could see the flavours on the packaging: salted, cheese and onion and salt and vinegar. Needless to say it failed.

Yeah,... BBC producers... she didn't think the "letter of intent" was a golden ticket. But she would have been positively worked up by the production team and told to bring it to justify her ambition. This is first telephone call territory... once you apply, and get an initial telephone interview you would be asked these questions, and she would have submitted all this prior to appearing. I suppose it made some good brand awareness being on the show.
