Kirby Pábalan-Táyag Aráullo is a renowned Filipino Culture Bearer and currently the National Coordinator for Culture and Heritage for NAFCON (National Alliance for Filipino Concerns). He is a Dátû and Lakan by blood, and an Activist at heart. Kirby is a direct descendant of the last Paramount Kings of Luzon (of both Lakandúlâ of Tondo and Rája Matandá of Maynílâ), and of the anti-colonial revolutionary Katipuneros and World War II Guerilyeras who fought for the liberation of the Philippines from colonialism. His upbringing exposed him to the contradicting worlds of traditional politics and grassroots activism.
With a keen interest in varying fields (such as history, government, and human rights) and a strong commitment to serve the community, Kirby studied in some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, such as the University of California, Davis, Harvard University, and Université catholique de Louvain. Kirby is also the Co-Founder of the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies at UC Davis and author of the groundbreaking book “Black Lives & Brown Freedom: Untold Histories of War, Solidarity, & Genocide.” He is a visiting professor at various colleges in the Philippines and a research fellow with Ágúman Sínúpan Singsing, an institute for indigenous advocacy and the study of Kapampángan language, history, and culture. I am one of those who did not know that we Filipinos had our own dragons. I was always fascinated with the Chinese and western dragons and was ignorant of our own. That we even had so many dragons in our culture was the most surprising. Too bad that this part of our native culture is all but forgotten. I wish we would highlight this part of our culture. I would love to have those animation films with our mythical heritage.

Bakunawa mythical creature is our own version of a water dragon. All around southeast Asia, they have this version of this water dragon. Not only is bakunawa our own but also our connection to our southeast asian heritage and neighboring countries

The fact that I'm upset people got so riled up about the PBB guests not being able to answer Filipino History questions and people are urging DepEd to do better in teaching History but knowing damn well that content such as these and anything else from this channel (which I deem more interesting) will never be shown to the young ones🤧 I had to learn from Google that in some regions there were Matriarchal societies pre-colonization. No History teacher ever mentioned that. All I remember them teaching us was about EDSA and nothing more.

I'm amazed of how much Hinduism has made a very big impact on Filipino mythology. For instance, the Filipino term Naga, comes from the Hindu serpent Naga in Hinduism. Lawu is a Filipino term that comes from the Hindu god Rahu. As a Filipino American who has minor ancestry gene flow from South Asia, I find this very fascinating. 😊

Indian culture left a huge imprint on Filipino culture that survived colonization. The words for face, create, teacher, vinegar, fortress, poet, rice cake, frying pan, eclipse (the celestial phenomenon), gun, vegetable, the gods (Diwata) and God himself (Bathala, not Diyos), and many more words are of Indian origin. The custom of dowry continued to be practiced well into Spanish colonization. Sanskrit along with Malay was the predominant language of art and culture in numerous ancient Philippine kingdoms. And as per the topic of this video, here is an account of a friar in 1731 describing how the Filipinos still held on to 'heathen' beliefs despite efforts to stamp them out (in this context, Indians = Filipinos): "When the moon is eclipsed, the Indians of various districts generally go out into the street or into the open fields, with bells, panastanes, etc. They strike them with great force and violence in order that they might thereby protect the moon which they say is being eaten or swallowed by the dragon, tiger, or crocodile. And the worst thing is that if they wish to say "the eclipse of the moon" it is very common in Philipinas to use this locution, saying "the dragon, tiger, or crocodile is swallowing the moon." The Tagalogs also make use of it and say, Linamon laho bovan. It appears that the Indians learned all this from the Sangleys of China, where all the abovesaid is performed and executed to the letter. It is not right to allow them to retain these deceits of the Chinese, and not to teach them our customs and truths. All the above contents of this section is not universal in all parts. Consequently, although all ministers ought to be careful to ascertain whether they are or are not contained in their ministries, they ought not to go ahead to censure what they are not sure of, for that very thing would perhaps teach them what we are endeavoring to extirpate." Which meant that even well into the Spanish colonial era, Indian-influenced beliefs still remained among the people. Beliefs in the Bakunawa persisted even in the American colonial era; case in point, in 1913, a Visayan priest published the story of Bakunawa and the 7 Moons, as (he states) recited to him by oral tradition. It's important to note though that although of the same myth, the bakunawa differs between regions. In Luzon, it's known as Laho/Lawu. In the Visayas it's Bakunawa, and in Mindanao, Bakunawa is Minokawa, and is actually a giant bird instead of a dragon. The Tagalogs saw Laho/Bakunawa as a demon, while the Bicolano saw it as a god.

I really hope that more people, Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike, learn more about and promote the pre-colonial cultures of the Philippines more over imposed Spanish-American influences. It will help fight colonial mentality and the racist notion that the Philippines was a bunch of savage tribes before Europeans arrived. I also forgot to mention the mga suyat, the various writing systems used by realms across the archipelago before they were displaced by the Latin alphabet. Virtually all of these, barring Jawi (the Arabic-influenced abjad of Mindanao), are ultimately of Brahmic origin in India. The most well-known and widespread one is, exactly the one in your username, Baybayin. The Buhid and Hanuo’o scripts are used in Mindoro, the Kulitan by Kapampangans, and the Palawans use Tagbanwa. Contrary to popular belief, the Visayas, and the other non-Tagalogs of Luzon (Ilocanos, Bicolanos, etc) did not have their own scripts; they used variants of baybayin which were erroneously thought to be a separate script. In addition to these scripts, Kawi, the script of the Javanese, was also historically used by ancient Filipinos, such as the ancient realm of Butuan where the Butuan ivory seal is from. This was because Java was the center of the Majahapit Empire, which dominated Maritime Southeast Asia and maintained extensive trade and cultural links with the kingdoms of the Philippines prior to the Spanish invasion, as demonstrated in the Laguna Copperplate of 900 AD. It is through Java/Majahapit (and the earlier kingdom of Srivijaya in Sumatra) that the Philippines became Indianized, as direct Indian influence was virtually nonexistent in the ancient Philippines.

But I disagree with your last statement about Indian influence coming to the Philippines indirectly from India. DNA studies have shown that Filipino people, including the Badjao people, do have South Asian ancestry from India. The South Asian Y-DNA H1a indicates the presence of Indians on the paternal side of Filipino people. The Indian Mitochondrial DNA haplogroups, M52'58 and M52a are also present in the Philippines suggesting that there was Indian migration to the archipelago starting from the 5th Century AD. While the integration of Southeast Asia into Indian Ocean trading networks around 2,000 years ago also shows some impact, with South Asian genetic signals present within some Filipino ethnic groups like the Sama-Bajau communities. Even from DNA tests that both my mom and me have done shows my mom and me having South Asian ancestry from the Indian Subcontinent, though not as much as compared to my mom's and I Northeast Asian ancestry and Southeast Asian ancestry, but we still have South Asian DNA in us, and I am proud of my South Asian, Northeast Asian, Filipino, and European ancestry. (I'm half Filipino half European American btw, but with South Asian, Northeast Asian ancestry as well). and I am proud of that.

Other dragons in Philippine culture that you didn't mention is Ulilang Kaluluwa (Orphaned Spirit), a serpent god present in Tagalog creation myth. Markupo, the large poisonous serpent known to the Hiligaynon of the Philippines. It lives in the highest mountains of the historical province of Bulgas, between Marapara and Canlaon. The Mameleu , a sea serpent in western visayan culture, it has a body and head as large as that of a water buffalo. It also possesses two white horns, and its body stretches up to thirty fathoms long. It has eyes torch-like, fire jets in them; long teeth; and large resistant scales. There is also the seven-headed dragon of Mt. Kanlaon. Sikay Pedalogdog from the “Hinilawod” epic of Central Panay is an eight-headed serpent that Humadapnon had to kill in his pursuit of Nagmalitong Yawa (Humadapnon's wife).

My lola told me a story about a dragon like-snake who saved the people from an erupting volcano by constricting the crater, staying there for the rest of its life and died still protecting the people. For me, Bakunawa can be considered as big. Because it's mouth has a same size of the moon. Bakunawa and Chinese dragon has same appearance too, but the difference is their allignment. I love this story about Bakunawa. Also, I believe that this is one of the influence of Chinese to Filipinos during the ancient times.

it's saddening that because of those colonizers our ancient roots are forgotten. even in history books before, the history only started when Magellan arrive in the Philippines. it's like almost denying our on identity before they arrived. And only in the technology age that these things are being dig deep and shown to the public. I hope a lot of Filipino historian from different tribes in our country can share their roots. So it cannot be forgotten and totally got extinct. can you also do a video of sarimanok🤗

This is just my question and opinion: Dear Sir Kirby Araullo can I ask a question like where does all these dragons come from? Like what part of the Philippines, tbh like I'm interested like where does each mythological creatures or legends of our country come from like what area or islands? I appreciate knowing more about our myths and legends but I feel like generalizing like the old myths and legends as Filipino and not knowing where they at least started or well-known like kinda erase the a part of the stories identity, like i could only compare it to saying all Pre-colonial Filipinos call God as Bathala which is inaccurate since our country have a lot of languages meaning there are different words/names for calling god in the old world like Tagalogs would call the god Bathala but Visayans would call theirs Diwata which means Gods or Deities (which now transforms to Fairy) even tho something like fairy or spirit would be called anito by the Tagalog. I hope there would be more representation of like other people from other parts of the Country, and that includes their Myths and Legends. I hope we, Filipinos, can know and be proud more of our Pre-colonial identities, and also the culture we have now, I feel like we undermine and don't appreciate ourselves much whether it's in real life or virtually too (I am very aware that I too am guilty of this) , I also pray we would change how we see things. It's fine to like other cultures and languages but I wish people won't think of ours as low and not uniques too (Ik there are people that feels insecure since we aren't as "unique" as our neighbors who preserved what they had but I feel like we too are unique in our own way and we should accept our Pre-colonial cultures, what we were influenced of by the other nations (tho we need to fix the colonial mindset) and what we are now. (I'm not trying to sound rude or mean sorry if it does 😣)

Had something land on my roof one night in Brngy Osorio,Trece Martinez City 1999,my 2nd week in country.10pm i heard it scream from a mile away.then it landed on my 3rd floor bedroom roof.everybody in brngy asleep,I was reading book.whatever it was bigger than i was,walked across roof to right over my bed ,then flew away- my ears popped from the pressure. The the same scream from a mile away in the other direction. There is a large Chinese cemetery at end of street.i believe in dragons now

We have stars in our Galaxy millions of times larger than our sun. Logically inhabitants of those collosal stars are obviously million of time larger than ours. My theory probably in the distant past our star system moved near these giant stars systems and some of their local inhabitants that can move around space got curious to our star system and our ancestors witnessed how they devoured our six moons leaving the 7th moon still in the orbit bcuz they all went home bcuz thier star system is moving far away and move back home as quickly as they can which is the reason we can't see them anymore.
