Dragons' Den

4 жыл бұрын

Two friends, Maria Magembe and Hellen Lawuo-Meena, step into The Den to pitch their premium skincare business, Daughter of the Soil. It's a brand that's inspired by Africa and its wealth of natural ingredients. The girls are hoping for a partnership with one Dragon in particular and are willing to give a 10% equity stake in their company in exchange for a £60,000 investment. But it seems their products are rubbing some of the Dragons up the wrong way...
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Like having sales of 1000 then projected sales of 500k in the same year? I get people want to be ambitious but, there's ambitious then there's ridiculous lol

@@JamesV1 What I've found is about £500 for both research into viability of the patent (name and logo) as well as registration through a solicitor. If you just want the registration, and don't need them to look into viability before trying to register for you, you can save around £90.This is for a UK only application. You can get one covering all of the EU for just a little bit more (bout £50 extra for the application itself, though the research does become a good bit more expensive, at £200). Once that is granted, you can apply for some world trademarking thingy too

The difference though, is that ProGains didn't have a trademark, it was in contention with a different product with the same name. Had he spent a bit more they would've realised that the name is too generic and gone with a different brand.

Here's the thing - Why I like Peter and Deborah is that when an entreprenur walks in that is pitching a product that is either one of their specialities, the other gives way for the expert to do the questioning. This is a courtesy Toukar needs to learn to extend to his fellow Dragons. Because guess what mate? You don't know much about the healthcare business. You may be good at retail but you have to respect that someone else's experience will be more specialised than yours. Especially if you want respect as well.

They have a good business if only they know how to operate. The packaging is nice and the back story great. I agree with Deborah on one aspect: They should go 100% natural and organic - exactly as her great great grandmother would have done - who is the inspiration behind this business. African raw shea butter is an acquired taste. You either love it or hate it (just like Marmite). However, raw shea is the best for skin and hair. Some companies even use it as a cheaper option to manufacture chocolates. For their shea product, they should have one in its natural raw state and another scented with natural essential oils - for those like Peter who can't handle the heavy smoky smell of the raw one. £4000 for a trademark is just ridiculous and these greedy lawyers are far too many for my liking. Many of them don't do anything but write letters and expect to be paid a lot of money. I could have done that for them for a fraction of what they've paid. There a lots of mistakes but they are learning and I wish them great success.

I've been in their position! It's impatience which initially rushes you to put your vision in motion because you think everything will fall in place automatically, which leads to taking shortcuts. Naivety plays a big factor in skipping vital steps E.g. not doing market research because you think there already is a demand for a product/service. You fail because physically and socially you are not up for the challenge of overseeing that vision and making it a reality. Those 2 ladies took shortcuts and fell short in terms of the physical aspect required to make their vision a reality.

This truely is one of the worst businesses to come onto the den recently. Highly competitive market, no real sales even with almost no profit margins. Product doesn't stand out and the owners look rather gullible, no research and getting scammed on claiming their brand name. I don't understand why they called them highly investable people because from what I've seen in this episode they're the exact opposite. Good mentality but no experience whatsoever.

building tension and drama. The editing can be wholly deceiving. They use reactions from the pitchers, and add them into Dragon's remarks making it seem like they've reacted to them directly. Like Touker responding to Tej and Tej looks at him in a completely out of place reaction.

As a cheapskate/tightwad, I've long suspected that expensive cosmetics, fashion etc are cheap stuff + BS marketing = premium product. The skin cream here cost £9 to make but sells for £32. It's made in Morecambe, Lancashire but the BS marketing connects it with an African village where a midwife used it on pregnant women's stomachs. Phooeey, was I right!
