How do you know that? She made a dumb assumption and likely most of you have no clue about how investments work since if she had invested, she would own preferred shared which carries a higher voting rights than common stock. You see, an investor can leverage the investment by putting a clause in it, that even though they own less of the outstanding shares, their voting rights are equal. What she said would make no sense in most companies since they are owned by people who would have had an established relationship before she came to the table. Small time investor trying to find an excuse not to invest. what if the company was owned by two friends or coworkers or a boy friend and girlfriend, wouldnt the nonsense she claimed still apply ?

its actually easy to see why their are confused. CPA here - non-accountants often do their accounting using a cash - basis, so they only look at the change in cash on hand and mistakenly confuse it as profit/loss. This is where they are getting to the $3k in cash balance after year 1, so they spent 97k from the 100k initial. We dont know how much is expense, since the dragons didn't ask about change in inventory or other assets. Year 2, their answer tells me they are reconciling with their tax returns or a financial statement they dont understand, and you can see the confusion on their faces. The accountant would have collected other expenses claimed that did not directly flow through the bank account, such as bad debt, milage, depreciation, etc. Thats likely where the 22k loss figure comes from, or it is adjustments to retained earnings that the accountant would have made for their other contributions to the business.

Update; I can't seem to find their current net worth, only for their other company Falcon. But what I do find is that their products are sold in my country. This is one of the first products that did from the show! So I guess that means something. You can find their products literally everywhere on the internet, so they did went globally with their trading at least.

@Arwyn Stats to that? Cause I have noticed the opposite - if you are multi-million rich, you don't even have to do anything. You have advisors that do stuff for you, so the family amasses more money. All the stats show the opposite - the rich getting even more rich, while the rest of the population is getting poorer.

Love it when people come in the Den and think, the Dragons were born yesterday. Good escape for the Dragons on this deal.

They've made similar attachments for decades. The only way it could make money is if it was about recognizable brand,- which is still pretty dubious.

Wait, the way the figures are being said £100k invested at the start Proceeds from sales went towards buying more stock 3 years sales in excess of £220k £120k worth of stock remaining Would explain how they made a net loss for the first three years right? Am I missing something? The excess stock was bought with the proceeds of the first sales, which is why they didn't make a profit until the fourth year. They put it all into buying stock.

Yeah, that's certainly possible. But they should really have been able to answer straightaway. It's pretty basic information if you're the business owner.

This is a great lateral thinking quiz. They should have pitched Lateral Thinking games. They would have walked out with 5 offers.
