Exactly , so amateurish to be honest ... Or they could have spoke about each of the mentors at startmate , stated each and every network those mentors bring and said , they have a successful network of investors so each one brings something different , since there is 6 of those people it commands 6x the value (maybe not as harsh) but there abouts ... In all fairness startmates network is good so they could have focused on that in detail to state the differences in value proposed ... All us entrepreneurs find it difficult to challenge when clear numbers are presented ... It might not have got them the investment but atleast it wouldn't have looked as blatant .... Essentially what they did was wrong anyway so the best you can ask for is to get out not looking like a total con man .... 6 times the value only after a few weeks is a rort no matter how you look at it ...

The whole startup is based on his work. The idea is utterly useless if the implementation sucks.

@Jessica73183 жыл бұрын
@@Timthevapeman44 Taj on Draong's Den I find I can do without. He seems pretty bland. The same for me goes with Jenny. Deborah, I must admit I find to be a staple of the show. Her, Peter, Duncan in the old days... to me they really had their niche and their specialty. There is also something very camera-friendly about Deborah. In a show like this, there's a great value in a dragon willing to be more talkative. Personality and charm aside, there's nothing more dull than when a dragon says: "I like this, but it's not for me and I'm out." or just "I'm out." Now, it'll happen to everyone at some point, the sheer number of pitches they listen to and the editing, you won't get a novel from every dragon on every decision, but dragons (or sharks) who are willing to explain their decision more often than others will provide a little more value to the 'watcher'. I love hearing the 'explanation' from a dragon as they assess the situation and explain why they're making an offer they are, or why they're uninterested, the struggles they see down the line, and the reason they can't justify an investment. Whether it be: - Conflict of interest (dragon/shark is involved with a similar product in another company). - Numbers not adding up - De-motivating an Entrepreneur (when the amount of equity they'd have to ask for is just so high the entrepreneur would own a very small piece. The result of this is that the entrepreneur is likely to lose motivation for it, which they'd still have if they could make more of the upside etc). - Not being a natural fit (the dragon can invest the 'money' but isn't a 'natural' investor. Every dragon tends to specialize in something, or have their area of expertise, and a 'natural' fit comes when an entrepreneur needs help in an area a dragon is an expert in. Those are the ideal partnerships) - Market knowledge (When an investor can love the entrepreneur, but simply know 'so much' about the market that they just get this strong feeling the entrepreneur is not cut out for what's coming. There can be this feeling that based on how the industry works, they know what the entrepreneur would need to succeed, and they also know what they look for in those first few minutes of meeting the person. It's very possible they can get the impression this person is unprepared or unequipped for what they'd need to do to succeed. They also know what this person is up against and knows more about what this person will have to face than this person thinks they'll need to do. As such, they have to refuse getting involved because they don't want to step into a bad situation trying to 'save' it when they can enter a situation that is more likely to succeed or encounter less struggle, and they have a better chance of making a victory more 'complete' rather than turning an outright slaughter into a 'well we gave it our best!'.) All this to say, I think as viewers of the show, we really benefit from Dragons who are entertaining and inspiring, we have our favorites and they stick with us. We love certain dragons, and some will always irk us and get under our skin. Personality, engagement, whatever draws you to a dragon is really up to you. But as a general principle, I like when Dragons are willing to 'explain' their reasoning in more pitches than not. An example of a reasoning that leaves me dumbfounded can be represented in: "I love this. There's definitely a market for it, you're clearly very good, you know the industry, you've done a lot with a little, no debt, you're doing everything right and I wish you all the best. I also really see how I could help on this so I'm tempted. I really am. But I'm afraid on this one I'm going to be out." To me, there's not really much explanation there as to why the dragon wouldn't invest. If they felt they couldn't help, I could accept that. "You're doing everything great, and I'd be tempted to give you the money just to see what you do with it... I have no doubt I'd get a return, but that would just be me adding money without being what you 'really need' as a partner, so I'm going to be out on this one since other investors would be a much better fit for you." - I could totally get that. But to say everything is great and you could help, and you won't without saying what it is that has you deciding against it feels tougher on the viewer to get, when in a very next pitch your comment might be: "I like this. I'm going to make you an offer." All in all, Deborah is really known for being one of the more outspoken sharks and she does give the editors a lot to work with. Peter was the same, as was Duncan.

The founder seemed genuinely confused why the sharks were pissed. He's not as savvy as he thinks
@xavwill48073 жыл бұрын
The sharks are just too egotistical to acknowledge that an earlier investment with more risk is going to demand higher equity, not even to mention the vast opportunity provided by said investors that's not pure cash. Perhaps the sharks could match that value, but they mostly needed money rather than expecting the sharks to devote more than a couple of hours into this one of the many many investments.

Just go to the lectures and make your own notes; read some text books. Go to tutorials, revise, and target areas that are very likely to be in the finals. A system that works and saves you money on buying somebody else's notes, which might miss key points, or contain errors or outdated information. Just be a good student FFS!
@wyattbowden96974 жыл бұрын
Well thats the point its made for people who miss a lecture but are about to go take a test so they need the notes
@tonydarcy74754 жыл бұрын
I’ve never done that and my average mark is a distinction. I’ve learnt it’s a lot better to read notes that are extremely focused on what the student needs to know (my uni provides these, but I know most don’t) over and over again, than what it is to spend a lot of time reading the textbook, attending lectures etc. which have a lot more information, but much of it is not really that relevant. Even with a service like this, if the notes miss something or contain errors, that’s fine - just do your best. No student is expected to get 100% on tests / the exam and the fact that it will contain the vast majority of the information needed, will help most students a lot more than a thick textbook as it is just so much more focused on what the student must know for the subject.

There was nothing wrong with that valuation as far as tech start-ups are concerned, once a big combinator picks up a stake in your company, the value automatically doubles or triples. Unfortunately these sharks are cheapos, so even these guys didn't expect an investment from them. Mark Cuban would have snatched this up in a jiffy. They even said they are going to US to get a few more rounds of investment, so most probably they just came onto the show for some publicity.

i mean most lectures are recorded online. and most people i know in my uni prefers to listen to the lecture recs instead of reading notes coz there might be mistakes, etc. and now we have to pay for unreliable student notes? and no one buys textbook anymore. Alumn of University of Auckland ,New Zealand here
@JerryNordstrom2 жыл бұрын
Oh man, people will be abusing that platform immediately. Using AI to scrape content from every course book sold, generate notes and uploading it to their platform.... and what tech can validate that any of these notes have any quality? Many people take notes, few take good notes that are written in a way for somebody else to interpret and consume.

Wow we actually had a web page just like that. It had everything, even previous test, not just notes. It is not necessary that kind of money to set it up but also nobody of the lazy students wanna pay for that. Everybody used our web, nobody gave us sh*t, we dump it 1 year and a half later and the people just bully us for the contents when it went down. We know the people thats studing in that uni now is still using our materials but only if it is free or if they can bully you into give them it for free. And yes, we were a bunch of nerds. Ah BTW teachers hated the page but they suspected of other people, never knew who we were.

1. If you attend a class X by professor Y all the questions in the exam will be based on the material of professor's Y presented in that course 2. So in ideal situation an end-user needs the exact notes, labeled notes on professor's Y course X. 3. Lectures are protected by the copyright so it would be professor's Y copyright infringement. If he had presented his ideas in a book published by a company, a publisher could come after you too. In case of notes from a unknown professor's course you could Google that for free more than 10 years ago so I think at the time of this show it was already available for free

Sharks really pressured them in a shady way. What if the company actually increased more than 6 times their sales since that point? They want to buy the small guys for small equities because that's "what's it's worth today", but when they have grown, they can't take the appreciation anymore? Don't understand how these two competent guys did not explain that their company objectively gained in value, or perhaps the editing is misleading and they cut it out. They should not be destabilized with these silly accusations if they actually have growth. Either they lie on their growth, either the show is deceptive in the final cut.

You can absolutely value it at a different rate. 1. you may have under valued it in the first instance. 2. there is advantages to rounds of investment which includes greater percentages of the business for higher risk. In short, the sharks here were looking at previous valuations not future valuations and in a sense were trying to get yesterdays price. thats not how things work and they should know better. The young guys did seem under prepared on what they wanted and pitching but I am sure they will learn from the experience.

"How much have each of you got?" "60% between us." "So 30% each?" "Hugh has slightly more." "We need to understand the shareholder structure, so how much have you got, each?" "48%" "And you've got 12%" "Mhm" Took a while. I would say I'm out right there. I can't stand people that misuse words like, slightly. To this guy, "slightly" means a factor of 4. "So how many kids you've got each?" "4 between us." "So 2 each?" "No, Hugh's got slightly more." "I have 3." "So you have 1?" "Mhm"
