Hi Rick, in your right hand, are you using the last/end finger joint in your back three fingers or the middle joint? I cant quite tell from the video angle. Thanks!

First joint. There should be plenty of space in there for your fingers to work. If your hand is closed up your doing it wrong.

@@rickdior thank you, i do see a lot of new jazz drummers using middle joint with a closed hand. Its for quiet precise playing I assume?

Excellent video!!! Rick, when you play a drag with your left hand it seems like the thumb/fulcrum is doing the work and the index and middle finger are barely moving. Is that correct? Isn't that different than how you usually play a double? If so then why? Thanks a lot!!!

Hi Ben That is correct. The bottom 2 fingers and the first 2 fingers are regulating the bounce of the stick while the thumb is moving it. There is naturally going to be just a little wrist involved to get the initial bounce. When I play a double stroke roll which is generally louder I let the stick bounce more between these groups of fingers so it may look like they are doing more but it is to control a louder bounce.
