Thank you for this video! I met someone who is deaf, and I am absolutely head over heels for him. This is my first time searching a video on how to date a deaf person. You made me laugh, and I am overjoyed to have heard your perspective and advice. I am so excited that I feel my nerves firing up! I can not wait to show him that I have learned a few signs. I hope it works out between he and I. He even lives in another ciry, about 4hrs away. There are two hurdles here, but I really do hope that we can overcome this! Haha Okay, way TMI! I couldn't help myself! I am enthusiastic and filled with excitement! Thank you again for this video!

i've dated a deaf girl and it's pretty fun to have to rely on body language, and acting things out instead of having to write all the time. sometimes it gets a lil tricky but it's still remarkable how much information you can give with just gestures and stuff.

Lost my hearing 6 yrs ago and my depression is killing me. Lost my job my family. Everything you could think of. I lost my faith in myself... My self esteem is too low. It's hard and traumatic. I feel ashamed to talk to other people afraid that they may make fun of me. I'm wearing hearing aids but it doesn't help me that much. I wish I can have my hearing back.

This is the first of your videos I've seen and I loved it! I'm learning ASL but I don't know anyone besides myself who is HOH/d/Deaf so I don't see it very often, and I always forget how fast your language is when I see a fluent youtuber, so when I turned on your video I had to laugh at myself because it caught me off guard. I think the language is so beautiful and it would be so awesome if more people knew it

Since you asked, I'm hearing, and I have only a little bit of experience dating Deaf folks (if you don't count the crush I had in high school that I never had the nerve to ask out), but here's a brief story of my first first date with a Deaf person: We met via an app. Her profile hadn't mentioned that she was Deaf, but she brought it up during messages, which was amusing timing, because I happened to be taking an ASL class already! Anyway, after messaging a bit, we decided to meet. I asked if bringing paper and pen would be helpful (I figured it would, but didn't want to assume), and she said yes... but then when we met, she had me put it away at first and just use ASL. I still really only knew a few words yet, so very slow, lots of confusion, lots of finger spelling, but it was kinda fun, and I learned a few words that I wouldn't have learned in class, which was nice. I didn't dare bring out the paper again, because she'd seemed pretty firm on just ASL, but eventually I guess she got tired of how limited things were, so she brought it out (it was on the table between us), and we started writing back and forth. This was *much* more effective, if still a little slow, and we had some nice conversation for a while. I was excited about it, but as I got to know her better, she turned out to be... well, let's just say that our personalities didn't quite align. :) Alas. I was excited to have met a deaf person by chance while I was taking ASL, and for a while there, I thought I liked her. Perhaps I'll meet someone else at some point... and/or go back for more ASL classes, which I think I'd enjoy doing. It's such a neat language to me.

Something I'm very curious about. For people who hear, when we have thoughts or our inner monologue, we hear it in our voice. If you've been deaf since birth and have never heard your voice, what does your inner voice...for lack of a better phrase, "sound" like?

lovely video Jonna, as a open minded guy who has no impairments I've always had a feeling to learn sign, its on my list to learn basics this year. i feel that i can have somewhat more valued friendships with deaf friends id that makes sense. im also open to dating a deaf woman, as i said before learning to sign interests me greatly.

I've just started dating someone deaf, she's 100% deaf since birth. She's so amazing, smart, funny, cute, and caring. I'm head over heels for her. She's bad at grammar so our conversations on messenger needs work. I know nothing about sign languages, but in the 2 weeks I've been with her (for almost everyday 2-4hrs a day). I can actually start having meaningful conversations with her only using signs. My tip to guys wanting to date a Deaf person. Be open minded and always put her first. Seek to learn ASL, SEE, etc. Always keep a notebook (because your phone's batt might die). Memorize the Alphabet 1st, this way if you can't sign the word/action you want to tell her. Just spell it out then use the sign language and question sign. If you're seeing this K, I love you :)

Someone who is hearing should learn sign language for their lover. I agree 100%. I would be thrilled to learn sign (again really; I had a rudimentary skill for the friend of a friend). If I meet a woman and I decide she is, "special;" hearing or not hearing means zilch as far as I am concerned (have you read Watership Down at some point in your life? That would be awesome!) The big perk of a dating a deaf woman who makes my heart go pitter-patter is they won't hear me snore... I snore really loud! Merely hold my hand and the loving look between soul mates needs no spoken word. If that woman is deaf, their nose will surely enjoy the scent of flowers I buy them. P.S. Jonna, you make me wish I was a young man again, I would be courting you. Thanks for your videos. All the best. (Song (with lyrics): When a Man Loves Woman - kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2nVkpSYr7-Bp9k

Hi. Great video. I am "hearing", but I learnt: american sign language, french sign language, and israeli sign language. I am a special education teacher, and love "sign language"...so when my bosses told me: you have to learn a little sign language, I took courses. And now, I now the 3 sign-languages as well as I know: french, english and hebrew. And you are right: one can communicate with deaf, mute people if one wants to. I am now volunteering with israeli people deaf,mute/blind. loved the video.

I'm not sure if this is something you've already answered or not, but it's something I'm often nervous to ask about as someone who is hearing and someone who can only sign a small amount. I took a sign language class at my school in Seattle and I feel like I learned a lot, but now it's harder to recall all of the syntax/order/some common words and phrases. I work at Starbucks and I have a deaf customer whose order I know and who I always ask clarifying questions to in ASL. She's incredibly sweet and very helpful, but I worry about how I sign when conversing with deaf students at my school. I want to befriend them, especially a guy who is super goofy and really friendly to everyone who interacts with him and who is just a generally lovely person but I'm concerned that because I'm not fluent or I don't sign well that I will come across as a bit of a wreck, or that maybe I wouldn't be someone they'd want to hang out with. I know this may seem...well, no I'm not sure how it would seem, but I worry about it. I wonder if, when you're making friends with someone who is hearing, you find it annoying/frustrating/irritating when they can't sign fluently or they're really rusty and if you do how said hearing people ought to do to better themselves or...be more accessible? Again, I am not sure how this will come across, but I'm coming from the most genuine place and I just want to make sure I'm being the best person I can be and that I navigate situations as well as I possibly can. :) Thank you so much for this channel, it's one of my favorites and I watched all the time during my ASL class last year!

Aw, don't worry Harper! I'm someone who almost never gets pissed off so that's hard for me to represent everyone else lol, but I do think that people will be annoyed if you're not trying to sign than trying to. I love people who tries their best, no matter if they suck or not and I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone by thinking in that way! Just try your best, don't overthink about it. They will be amazed that you put down energy on trying signing. That's brave. That's something beautiful. They'll love you for it. Again, don't worry! You have my back!

I like this channel. I'm not deaf, but I always wonder to learn sign language, then already subscribed. Only 2 things first one is weird not to listen to something in the background when you express yourself, but at the same time is relaxing because not all time you need to listen. The second one is to know if you have videos for the basis because I would like to learn more about this language.

heres an odd question. with all the online dating sites do you mention youre deaf? do you meet up for the first date like surprise? i met ( not in person) a deaf man on one and he didnt tell me until he saw a status i put on facebook about knowing asl. but that was also how he found out i was blind. odd combo but we remain friends to this day. he signs slower for my vision sake while i sign faster because he has no trouble seeing my hand movements.

Emily Fissell: I know you're asking Jonna, but one random data point: I had a date with a Deaf woman from an app, and she didn't list it in her profile, but did let me know before we met, which was nice, because it gave me the opportunity to ask if I could do anything helpful like bring pen and paper, which she said yes to, so I did, and that was definitely helpful.

Elena D'ark: regarding the quickness: KZbin has a feature to change the playback speed. You could set it to half or 3/4 speed, and it'll give you more time to read, or even read and watch the signing. And if you're on a desktop or laptop computer, there are browser plugins that can give even more fine-grained control of speed, plus letting you go back in smaller increments, etc.

Great info. Very fast and animated and excited. Im almost 60 though!! Slow down for us older folks sweetie!!! KZbin has LOTS of videos for beginning ASL that help me a LOT!! ALPHABET!! LEARN IT!! The woman is a woman and just wants to be a woman. Dont treat her like a deaf woman!! If you care, you should WANT to learn your ASL!! If nothing else comes of it youve learned a way to communicate that you will use for the rest of life. The basics should be mandatory in public schools. They are Americans and speak English! They have the right to the same life and freedom as all of us. No restrictions. Stores restraunts bars schools libraries. Need basic ASL as part of their training. Im on a soap box. Im just now learning these things i wasnt aware of. My eyes are wide open now!

I have only had a little feedback from the Deaf community about Switched at Birth, but it was all bad. I am almost positive that some of their signing is wrong. However, I enjoy the series and I pause and rewind it a lot as a way to learn more ASL vocabulary. I have decided to consider it taboo and something not to bring up in conversation to a Deaf person. There was an ASL series recommended to me that took place in New York City, but I cannot remember the name of it.

Right off the bat, bashing hearing people. It's only natural to be a bit ignorant about an uncommonly seen group of people. Most people never MEET a Deaf person, let alone have any kind of relationship with them. It doesn't take much to teach and learn that Deaf people are just regular people who can't hear. Just give people the benefit of the doubt that they haven't had the opportunity to think about that.
