Dang, Maggie sure did white wash this whole discussion by being defensive and continually trying to redirect the convo to her experience. Shut up and let Queens Angela Bassett and Sandra Oh speak and educate you. Loved the looks they shared when they had to correct Maggie on her assumption of their experience in the industry.

I agree. I feel like Angela Bassett at the kiddie table with this group. It’s one of the downsides of “Black don’t crack.” If you appear young to others, you’re assumed to be younger and less experienced. It can be a hindrance when you’re not acknowledged for your longtime success. Everyone has been complimenting Angela on how great she looks for her age, but few are acknowledging her extensive career that goes back decades.
@selalewis9189

SuperPunch76 Including Ms. Bassett within a group like Blanchett or Streep doesn’t necessarily have to be about White acceptance in this case, but rather acknowledging Angela’s age and experience.

This was frustrating to watch. It's clear Thandie has a lot of trauma wrapped into how she was treated and exploited in the industry, and for Maggie to immedIately counter that with "well I know good men / that's what women historically had to offer" was excruciatingly tone deaf and reeked of privilege. Same as both of them not even acknowledging the experience that a darker woman of colour / less "conventionally" attractive women had experienced. So much fertile ground for discussion but it all stayed shapeless and poorly articulated. I wish I'd heard more from Angela Basset too. I think the moderator did a poor job.

The conversation about sexuality is exactly why these panels need to continue to be diverse. Maggie’s experience is completely different than that of Angela and Sandra’s because they aren’t necessarily looked at as sex symbols. Their bodies/faces/skin are not what the industry has typically used in scripted forums to show what sexuality can be. I think Maggie learned a lot from their push back to her about how these things differ based on your race. I loved the different perspectives.

I was laughing out loud when Maggie went on about how she's a sexual person and about how men are interested in women's experience during sex. Umm duh. Lady, that is not at all what they were talking about. And then that moment of silence when they were all just comprehending her total lack of understanding. LOL. They were talking about the fact that roles for women are limited to sex appeal. I feel sorry for her, she doesn't get it.

Came here for Angela and I feel, like so many of the other commenters, deprived! Angela Bassett is the most experienced actor at the round table and it’s blatant disrespect to not allow her to share her wisdom. Maggie and Thandie talked over her repeatedly and selfishly dwelled on their experience alone. For my 3 generation household, Angela Basset was a beacon in Hollywood who silently progressed racial identity and roles in film and television. Sadly, if you’re here for Angela, don’t waste your time. She only spoke about 3 to 4 times and was interrupted majority of the interview smh.

Thandie was sus from her "sorry for stealing your men" video she made to black women....except she only dates/marries white men. So, already, it was weird. I think, for Angela, it's because of how she's ALWAYS carried herself. There are few in entertainment that I would call classy, but Angela has been classy in every role I've seen her in. Regal. She's always been a beautiful woman you respect whether playing a single mother, a cop, or a queen. So maybe that's the answer to Thandie's little question.

A panel discussion is a delicate balance between really listening to what others are saying, and speaking to what you know. Sandra had an excellent balance of both, but every time I wanted to hear Angela, Elisabeth, and Claire - Maggie and Thandie interrupted them and went on and on and stepped on what the other women were saying. Thandie and Maggie seem like the types to practice transcendental meditation. Not that there’s anything wrong with being spiritual and feeling one with the universe but it did get annoying that they kept bringing the topic back to themselves and their own stories. It’s one thing to connect to someone else’s story and compliment them in a sense but they focused on their own stories after doing that instead of reflecting back to the person they interrupted. I’m not sure if they’re even aware they’re doing that or if it’s the way this is edited? But would’ve liked to hear the others talk more too.

I hope the moderator learns from this interview on how to better facilitate conversation at the roundtable. The way in which Thandie & Maggie were allowed to steer the conversation away from the other actresses with about every question became frustrating. It is not just men that have silenced our voices, so have other women who hold a higher privilege in this society and I expect any moderator who addresses that head on to also be proactive in checking that when it happens in their presence. Angela briefly touched on her experience as a dark skin woman. Thandie needs to be more intentional on centering the voices of darker skin actresses above her own. Her choice to consistently over talk everyone in this interview while criticizing the inequality among women was hypocritical and disappointing.

Disappointed when you have queens of acting Claire, Elisabeth, and Angela and they barely get to talk. Instead it's just Maggie and Thandie harping on sex and misogyny the whole time. These issue are important especially in Hollywood today, but it's sad to see that the conversation never really moved on to talk about craft and acting.

EXACTLY! This is why (and I don't want to sound like I bash my fellow women) I like the male actor interviews better! The get to talk about their actual craft, Bryan Craston said something about no matter how difficult the industry has been to you, should always try to not be a pain on everybody's ass and play victim, of course he doesn't deal witht he issues women in film often do but it's true! In every dark story must be a silver lining or a lesson to be learned! These interviews can be so educating and informative if properly done and I sadly only get to see that when men talk about their craft more than they do about their adversities cuz it allows them to grow!

Thandie went on forever (not saying what she was saying was wrong but dang girl let someone else have the floor) and Maggie kept interrupting everybody. The most chaotic round table ever. Angela has Queen energy she so incredibly graceful. Maggie and Thandie seem so deeply insecure and it's clearly made their choices in work go a certain way. I have to say this but I can't stand it when people victimise themselves constantly like Thandie does. You overcome it and keep it moving. That's is strength. Thandie mentioning her daughter in a leading role. Like she sounds soo deepy insecure. Sandra is just iconic and Thandie was beyond irritating to watch and listen too truly.

Thandie seemed more eager to connect and make others feel understood and heard. Her intterruptions were more about reasuring and apreciating others' achivements, struggles and perspectives. With Maggie it seems to be more about her inability to empathize with others', specially when it comes to racism and colorism. She was friendly, and is very tactful and polite in a "manners but no real respect" sense. She's kinda stubborn in her own perspectives and experiences. Maybe even a tiny bit patronizing while very eager to be understood and seen. She also seems to have more internalized misogyny that most other people on the roundtable, making excuses for it and accepting crumbs. Which is obviously a process, most women at some point buy into some of the bullshit and it takes effort, selfreflection, humblety, selflove and strenght to break away form it. I think that comes from growing up in Hollywood in a family right at the middle of the action and being raised to talk apologetically, gender stereotypically "femenine", slightly manipulative and softly to males in showbiz and to people in general (that's the reason why people like Mila Jovovich can come off as so plain and disempowered, and the reason why most people of every gender who live in Hollywood seem so plain, out of touch and homogenic too). She's got a very instrospective mind and she's throughtful and respectful most of the time but is very biased by those experiences. If that's actually the case and I'm not very off. This roundtable was insanely brilliant, I'm gonna rewatch it. I came from a male roundtable and the only one who got me engaged was Billy Porter. The others seemed too comfortable and atributed their success to "luck" instead of to white supremacy and heternormativity as it is. Even the other black guy gets roles not only for his talent but bcs he has "manly" manierisms. I mean I feel bad for them too when things go south or when they struggle, but they just don't wanna see things right in the face. It's shameful. They had nothing to say, it was like listening to the same person divided into 3 bodies. Diego Luna was alright too I guess (as well as obviously the other black guy though he was always trying to please white ears), but he has yet to adress his classism and internalized racism. Any human rights movement gets sabotaged from the inside by not taking every oppressed group into account. The situation isn't gonna begin to get better in my country if we don't look at ourselves in the mirror. Of course is not our fault that gringo government genocidal and imperialistic policies and their drugs demand have screwed up Latinoamerica (and the gringo racialized and other oppressed communities). Nor is having such corrupt, genocidal and ecocidal maniacs with bottomless greed for politians but if we don't include the rights of women, LGBT+, disabled, indigenous, black Mexicans, refugees, the most exploited and others into our demands, and recognize white supremacy in ourselves or our past selves we're not really adressing the issue. Anyway, this comment should go on the other video, what I'm saying is that this one was very thought provoking and basically genius. It was a real dialogue despite of interruptions and some misunderstandings. They were meeting eye to eye, and mostly listening and caring for each other. In the other video whenever Porter talked most closed down, looked away or angrily at him. Or with desdain!!! Luna seemed the most respectful at the beggining but then laughed at Porter, mocked him when Porter said he was actually shy in private, and spoke over him. What a Dbag. No matter how many people find Hugh Grant charming and non assuming, the guy is useless as a human or a living being in my book if he can't acknowledge and listen to Billy Porter or anyone else mentioning uncomfortable facts. In this video there were looks of discomfort and even patronizing or pittiful at times but every one except for Maggie in that moment, kept on taking the others and their experiences seriously and saw them as true and worthy of attention. They took it as a learning experience and to connect and listen to others.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has to understand that she has come to Hollywood with a lot of power attached to her. Her brother paved the way for her and her name was already recognized before she made it big. That, plus her social location (white) gives her a lot of immediate power and I don't think that she has experienced the same things in the same way as the other women have. That being said, it's not Maggie's fault and she has done nothing wrong, but there is this visible disconnect hanging in the air and I felt the need to share what I think is going on here. Cheers!

Iwas thinking the same thing. Angela did not think her comment was funny. Her face was like, Don't go there.

I love the push back and discussion in this round table. And I love the way Sandra speaks with her hands and body.

Sandra have so much emotion in the way she express herself, ITS SO THEATRICAL YET GENUINE. I LOVE HER I WOULD DIE FOR HER.

Now I see what everyone is saying. Thandie and Maggie killed this whole interview by over talking and talking over people. I blame the host for not taking better control.

Ugh...I wanted to hear Angela Bassett expound on her perspective of sexuality in her roles, but everyone cut her out verbally. I mean, she sat and listened for God knows how long to listen to everyone --my bad--Thandie and Maggie speak for damn near 9 mins before she spoke up. It's been19 mins and they never came back to her. I almost forgot Elisabeth Moss was there lol-- ugh--I don't have patience today for this fuckery. I'll finish this up when I'm a little more patient.

Elisabeth Moss is so intelligent and lovely :) Shame a select few hogged the conversation, but it was very endearing to see she has the beautiful, respectful trait of listening to other people. Especially in this "extroverted" world..

I clicked for Ms Bassett, can we have an edited version of just Angela talking? Someone needs to tell Thandie, she ain't that interesting, take a breath, I was embarrassed for her several times. Her time with Oprah has gone to her head!! Maggie is terrific normally, but she got sucked into a chat-off with Newton here. Sandra is a revelation. Elizabeth is so respectful. Claire is so real, loved her.
