I have a similar story. My first real guild, I joined in Cataclysm as protection paladin, and maintanked Firelands and Dragon Soul. I became an officer since the guild was new, all the other officers were awesome people. The guildmaster was a small business owner, and despite doing most of the recruiting himself, was very often busy and didn't raid much. Our officer team held up the guild for months in the GM's absence, organizing stuff and generally being awesome. Then the GM logged on one night and started making structural changes to the guild without telling anyone. We officers got together immediately and asked the GM into our impromptu meeting and asked why he was making changes, why he hadn't consulted with anyone about it. His response was simply, "It's my world, man." The entire guild removed itself from under him that evening, selected the most respected officer as our new GM unanimously, spent the evening choosing a name and tabard, and had a party in voice chat. One of the most memorable, enjoyable nights of my WoW career. Lifelong friendships were formed. In a way, we owe that self-important GM a generous word of thanks.

The toxic "nice" guild leader story is super relatable. Mine ended up just gm + her hubby. Totally insufferable.
@XxTaiMTxX2 жыл бұрын
The toxic "nice guild" was the first I ever joined... and I joined it in FFXIV. Insanely insufferable. It was not even a "be nice" guild. It was a "We're a PG-13 Guild, with zero tolerance for fighting and drama". Naturally, there was a lot of fighting and drama... behind closed doors. Naturally, almost nobody talked or interacted with each other in that Guild either. Except the newbie "sprouts". Only them and sometimes the "Officers". It was a lot of "walking on eggshells". I was in that guild... 2 years? 3? I forget. I was kicked last year, I think. Kicked for "zero tolerance policy". My crime? Oh, it was EGREGIOUS. I had stated, "I'm so glad this guild isn't a Hardcore Raid Guild. I never want to be part of one of those because I think it's stupid for people to schedule their fun and turn something enjoyable into an obligation and a job you pay to have." Cue fight and argument from "The Raiders" of the guild. None of them making an argument against what I'd said... Oh no. It was instead, "you are insulting Guild Members by saying that". At which point, after hearing this absolutely moronic way of thinking, the classic "You aren't allowed to have or voice an opinion if it offends someone!", I was just done. I engaged in the argument. The first and only one I ever had in that Guild. A guild where I had spent time helping out newbies, getting them started on Relics, being partners for some Dungeons (as I felt like doing) and just generally being kind to people in chat... Yeah, I was done. So, I let this idiot have it. I challenged him to prove me wrong. The argument devolved into, "You wouldn't help out people for free?!". I have no idea how we arrived at this point, but I didn't care anymore. "No, I wouldn't! If your time is worth anything to you, or ANYTHING to the person YOU ARE HELPING, then you should be compensated!". This somehow translated to the absolute brainlet that we were now talking about how helping Guildies was stupid. Before I could respond, "Guilds are different because they're a social contract where you have agreed to help others on the pretense that they will help you too.", a couple officers came in broke up the fight. No word was uttered to me. Not a whisper. Nothing. I played for another hour, but my back was in pain from sitting on my very bad computer chair, so I went to go relax with a movie or something for a while. Came back 4 hours later (I watched some anime too, sue me), and I was no longer in the Guild. Eh, okay, whatever. I could guess pretty easily and quickly why I'd been kicked out. So, I opened up Discord to quit out of their group and discovered I had been kicked from that too. Ah, good, saved me the trouble. Here's where the stupidity continues. The Guild Leader had saw fit to send me a message about the reason I was kicked and then to block any replies to me. A final middle finger to me, I suppose. An "I got the last word in!" moment for someone with a large ego and a tiny amount of sense. This wasn't just a, "you were kicked for X reason" reply. Oh no. It was a, "you were kicked for reason X, you did Y and Z and good luck with a new guild, a-hole". And, then, a couple screenshots of chat. She was attempting to provide "proof" of what I'd done wrong. But, it wasn't even the same incident. Oh no. You know what they screenshotted as proof that I was being mean and rude and terrible and needed to be kicked for what was effectively "bullying" and "offending people"? Chat logs of me explaining why I didn't participate in the weekly Guild Lotto. Why I didn't dump money into the Guild Fund for their prizes. What were their prizes? Nothing tangible. Aside from "You win 5 million Gil!". Everything was, "You get a kit to level you to max Crafting level of your choice!". Something absolutely useless to anyone who was already max crafting level. Or things like, "You get a glam of your choice from any expansion except the current one!". Which... look... I don't know what all the equipment is or looks like. I'm not running around cosplaying or anything. I'm also not going to put playing a game on hold to try to decide which "glam" I wanted. Especially when it didn't feel "earned" this way. Or, oh, you could win a $5 card for the store! So, my explanation was simply, "I'd rather it be tangible rewards, with some things I might decide I want or can't otherwise obtain, than nebulous stuff that is going to make do a ton of research to even figure out what exactly I want". Screencapped that, sent it to me. Kicked me, sent me a message of "F U" (essentially, think of the nicest way to say F U, and that's what I got), and that was it. I hadn't even been angry until that point. I knew I didn't belong with that guild anymore. Anyone who had any sense left it to join other guilds or start their own in order to do their own thing, or adhere to less strict rules. Most Raiders left it because it wasn't hardcore enough. Most people who wanted to be themselves and tell the occasional dirty joke or discuss adult topics left to join guilds that weren't PG-13. Other people left just because nobody talked or really helped each other and so had no connections to anyone in the Guild. It wasn't a guild for me. I don't enjoy walking on eggshells and having to "censor" my speech. But, I got angry when they decided to use a screenshot to justify banning me... block me so I couldn't even present a case (why else post a screenshot unless you were going to have a conversation about it? What a waste of time if you're just going to block someone!)... and THEY DIDN'T EVEN USE THE CORRECT CONVERSATION! It immediately dawned upon me that I had been in an utterly incompetent guild run by deranged people. A guild CONSTANTLY recruiting NOTHING EXCEPT children and "newbies". Their ranks were perpetually filled with both. More sprouts than veterans. 90% of their population was newbies. 30% were children. Most of the conversations they had were about mental disorders that they all had. Autism, Anxiety, etcetera. I had been in a guild where the people were basically the stereotype of Tumblr. I had been in a guild where the people were the stereotype of "The SJW". I still don't know why I was in that guild for like 3 years. My next guild was better. Well, still is better, I suppose. I like them a lot more. They're just as unhelpful, but at least we all joke around and goof off and have a good time in chat. And, hey, I help out a lot more there than I did in the last one, because the people who genuinely need/want help will ask for it and will "disband" once the job is done. So, that's the lesson. NEVER trust a guild that has "be nice" as one of the rules. "Don't be a dick" is fine. But "be nice" means you're about to inducted into a cult.
