maturing is realizing why my parents hated for me to watch all those rich families on youtube. they were so rich and lived such a good life, and when i would show them they would just get sad bc they couldn’t give that to me. like it honestly is heartbreaking thinking back on it and how unrealistic my expectations were

Yes…. I used to watch these families as well. It’s really sad that their targeted demographic is young children who will be led to believe that their own family life isn’t “perfect”

It's a little bit sad they did this to kids, luckily I wasn't like this. I was fine living a small live with an alright amount of money. Yeah, I got jealous, but looking back I wasn't that sad about my life.

This is why i like youtubers like moriah elizabeth becuase she had a kid when she already had millions of followers (shes a art youtuber) she showed her child once wont even say her childs name in front of a camera because she wants her child to be safe behind closed doors which is amazing

when i was like 10 (6-7 years ago) i used to watch videos of family channels of kids opening like hundreds of toys for christmas bc i hoped one day mine would be like that so i can definitely see how that type of content can be damaging to kids and make them feel like that. my family didn’t have as much money growing up so christmas was limited but always a lot of fun. family channels don’t need to exist is what i’m trynna say😭😭

Yea! When I was young I watched the Labrant Family and I was angry and quite jealous that one of their children (everleigh I believe) got so many brand partnerships resulting in her getting all the newest toys that I wanted. I honestly feel bad for all these children because even if they get a lot of toys and presents they are probably worn out from always being put in front of a camera and faking their real life. They can’t consent or say no, either….

this is a topic that i truly think needs to be talked about more. it is illegal (at least where i live) to take a direct photo of a person or group of people without their permission, and i feel like its almost the same doing this with your baby/child. but on the other hand, i used to watch sis vs bro in like 2017 and enjoyed this content. they werent so young but i still think they are very young to be providing for their family. they made vlogs and showed off their money like crazy which made me feel pretty bad. i agree with pretty much everything you said in this video. thank you for doing this podcast, its my fav podcast atm and wednesday is starting to be my fav day of the week haha

I know some family vlogs are more advice based, like “how to put a toddler to bed” or “how to explain death to a child”, and I think those are great, making family advice accessible to lots of people without those people needing to pay for it is inherently good (in my opinion). The problem arises when it’s selfishly motivated.

I used to watch family channels till I was like 13 and I think maturing is me realizing that the reason why most children watch these videos, is because these kids that we watch hav run realistic expectations. You watch them having fun bonding, living a rich and perfect lifestyle that most people just want. And watching these videos feels like that you are i guess living the life with them. Like your going along on vacation with them and everything. Especially people who are only children, they want to feel less alone and what it’s like to have siblings i guess.

I watched family channels around 10/11 years old. I'm an only child and seeing siblings playing games and doing challenges was so fun and entertaining, and I could see myself being there. Sometimes I would get jealous and wonder what it would be like if I could be a young, famous youtuber. I would pretend to be in videos talking to myself. I'm not sure what appealed to me so much, but I mostly just watched kids my age.

When I was about 7-8 years old, during the slime craze, I would watch them when they involved slime, witch was a lot. Once the slime craze was “over” I quit watching family channels, I also matured and realized it was weird. My little brother, he watches family channels when they do trick shots, gaming, or other things of that sort.

When I was younger around the ages of (8-11) I watched family channels and a lot of youtube in general because I was not in a really good position in life and the only thing that I did and was really allowed to do was to watch youtube and that is where I had found family youtube channels. I never really watched the ones about unboxing or the ones purely based around children or that were based around gifts and money and things because I didn't really care about that stuff. Still, I watched the ones where family would be together doing activities and playing games together because I had never really gotten the chance to experience that so that was the way where I could feel like I was involved in that aspect of a family and I received joy from it. But as I got other that stuff didn't appeal to me anymore because I had grown out of that mindset and started thinking that it was a little strange. But I will always be thankful for those channels being accessible to me at that time because in truth it had helped me a lot. Anyway, less of that rant I highly doubt that anyone will read this but it is good to think back and reflect.

I'm 17, and when I was 14 and 15 I watched family KZbinrs, but not a lot. I still do every once in a while, because I'm an only child and it's interesting to me to see siblings interact, even if they're not realistic. I know it's stupid, but sometimes it's what I need. And I only watch these family KZbinrs maybe once every 2-3 months, and it's only 3 videos max.

I don’t know why People would do this… Why the hell would my parents put thousands of baby photos on the Internet where old men would could save them to the computer or something like that The reason why I kind of stopped watching the family channels is because every year they get worse and worse. No go to sound rude to the Norris nuts or anything but but maybe like two years ago they never asked for subscribers and they promised us they wouldn’t really ask for subscribers we could do whatever they want but now in this generation they keep on saying subscribe to our channel I know not everyone’s going to agree with me on this but it’s kind of like every time we move up a year, more faker and toxic social media gets…

I was like 10 or something when i watched Cole and sav (family youtubers.). I think it was because my family was really messy and chaotic, and i wanted something that made me feel happy. Idk. They just seemed like the perfect family, like so happy together, and they were Christians (i was religious too at the time). Honestly I was jealous of their family dynamic (I have a lot of family issues and childhood trauma) and how everleigh got a lot of attention (i watched them whrn everleigh was an only child).

i would watch family youtube channels as a kid because i was just so bored and i was always so sad that they had a rich happy family with their bio mom and dad who loved eachother, i always wondered why my family was divorced and both lived in apartments and not living in a mansion. it made me jealous so then i would hate watch them just to be like "ugh they are so spoiled and mean. i don't like them" but then when the day was done i would sit there and wonder why they have all of that stuff while i dont. i really do think that it is toxic to show kids opening 50 christmas presents while i would get 10. i think that its fine to do a day in the life where you and your kids go to the park and have fun on the slide. i will admit i watch famila diamond or something while doing homework just for some background noise but i do think that it is toxic to show your kids getting all of these great things that most familes dont get.

Hi. I'm thirteen, using my mom's KZbin acoount. Now, I started watching EvenTube when I was like, six, took a break, and then I started watching again when I was eleven. The entertainment for me, is probably the editing. The editing sometimes is funny. And when I was smaller, it was also because liked looking at the toys. Unboxing, or unwrapping videos is the best as a kid. It's so entertaining. I stopped watching it though, about a year ago. Which was also the time I gave away all my toys. Now I'll just watch Gilmore Girls on Netflix, or I'll read a fictional book. I'm addicted to reading. So....yeah.

But ever since I saw the truth videos about these family vloggers I started to be disgusted by them. Okay so like a few years ago i discovered the channel "the norris nuts" from my sister (she was like 7 at the time and i was like 10). I used to adore them especially since i found a family channel from where im from (aus). I loved there life sm and wanted to be like one sm to the point where i started copying her personality.. slowly as i got older i started to feel more bad for the kids. Sabre there oldest has been on yt ever since she was like 12 and shes 18 now.. bc of her parents.. and she was getting famous for being great at skateboarding and surfing but that suddenly stopped for this yt money. They keep on having kids and calling them the stupidest names like "disco" and "charm" and they are clearly for the money. They adopt a dog once and it died and they made a whole video saying exactly what happened which started a whole meme on the poor dad. they also make there kids edit all the vids and "home school" the kids. They showed there oldest daughter ass on camera while saying its "inappropriate" for her to have it out. and also talks abt how there like 12 year old daughter shouldnt wear crop tops bc there not happy with it but then they show it on the camera. sometimes i watch them to cringe at this point but im honestly getting tired of them..

The main audience for the family channel videos (as a lot of the other comments are saying) is like 7-12 year old kids ish and I think that this is because the kids watching don’t know any better. They can’t and don’t understand what’s happening and like the toxicity of these channels. Kids just want to be like the rich kids in the videos living “perfect” lives, they don’t understand what happens behind the scenes.

my situation is a little different, more tame than some of these youtubers. but my dad is a pretty public figure where i live. he's in a popular local band and he brings a whole lot of attention to our family. and he likes documenting things, he always has. and i never saw much wrong with it until i turned 11 and realized i didn't want to be photographed or videod without my permission anymore. sometimes he'll sneak in my room and start recording and taking pictures when I am in my pajamas and having me-time and just wanna be left alone. i don't like it at all. i'm 16, almost 17 now and i became more vocal about my distain of his behavior. he always guilt tripped me into it. he'd threaten me emotionally with his own death. it irritates me how he just posts my face to the public when i don't want it. it's made me have a lot of issues with my face and body dysmorphia. and I'm not alone in this, all of my siblings hate it too. i hate it so much.

I literally remember a video of one of the girls saying they would stay up until 2-3 in the morning recording videos and editing and then wake up at 4 to get ready for school. That is what disgusts me now. I can’t believe that parents would do that to their children and that they didn’t see a problem with it. And the only reason they had to stay up til 2-3 AM was because they had about 7 channels! Of course they were staying up that late. In any case, I find it gross and just.. no. But then? I thought they were the perfect little happy family. (Spoiler alert, they’re not.)

as someone who used to be a huge fsn of fgteev and their oher channels like fvfamily, i think? idk i havent watched them since i was around 12, im 16 now, i think the appeal for me was how different and "better" they were as a family, no fighting or yelling, just basically trips and money and absolute bliss without a care in the world in their videos, and i wanted to live that life too, even though mine was basically the complete opposite, i found a way to dettach from MY life to theres, like a safe place basically. its pretty unhealthy in hindsight, i was always so jealous cuz they were so much wealthier. but everyones different, thats just my experience.

These kids should be covered under the Coogan Act. It was passed in 1939 after Jackie Coogan, one of the first child stars mother and stepfather went through almost all of his money before he was an adult. He played Uncle Fester on the original Addams Family tv show.

I used to watch a few family channels in my teens. In the adoption niche. Which kinda makes it worse. But it had that 'wow' factor. The families were usually large (8+ kids) The families (mainly a channel called Crazy Pieces) I watched all seemed to have a healthy family dynamic. This may not have actually been the case because you can control what you put on the internet. But I didn't think about that at the time. I guess the appeal for me was exactly that. These kids, in my view back then, were growing up with things that I didn't have. My family is dysfunctional. We're also not super wealthy. My parents got divorced when I was 15. I found comfort in that kind of content because of what I had lost. Plus, growing up I always felt like I was adopted. So maybe that explains my interest in adoption content. I'm 22 now and I haven't touched content like that for 2 years now. I hope this helped in broadening your perspective, Ben. There's a lot more that I want to talk about, but it would honestly be too long.

This is so true omg people recording their kids opening up egg and dolls make other kids compare it to theirs and all the gifts they get and a large audience like that attracts wierd ppl just put on a show or cocomelon instead its not that hard instead of exploiting 5 year olds😭😭

When I was 8 or 9 I used to watch a family channel about a huge family playing games like Among Us and Granny in real life with each other. I have one brother and both of my parents own two businesses so they couldn't play games with us like that family could. It made me very sad when they were too tired to play Granny or Among Us. Looking back at it, I realized that most of their money came from recording their kids and KZbin.

“i didnt watch other toddlers “ we basically were sponge bob is an exaggerated child put into a adults body phineas and ferb centers around the kids , gravity falls centers around the kids, we where basically watching the same thing but cartooni and it was all to dream that we where like them with superpowers or fairy god parents and modern day kids just dream of being rich and buying all the slime they can

i watched these channels from 7-10/11, and i thoroughly enjoyed them. i thought they had the best life, they got toys they wanted, lived in these super upscale neighbour hoods in los angeles/some big city with super big houses, etc. i thought they had such good lives that i should just live with them. i’m really glad i matured and realized most of these shitty family channels are just using their kids for fame and money. ty ben for talking about this !

I was like around 10-12 when I used to watch family vlog type stuff and what not. My family is incredibly dysfunctional, and I feel like as a kid I would see these family vlogs and how perfect their lives seemed, I loved watching them cause I felt like when I did I would be distracted from how horrible home life was, and I could just pretend I was in a different family, with people who loved and respected each other, treating each other as actual human beings with feelings, and thoughts.

I was 3-8 o watched fgteev and at the time I think it was bc it was funny to me at the time and the stuff they did was usually quite easy to do cuz they basically js play games and made jokes but they always said that the internet was fake and no one had a perfect life which at the time I didn't realize was a factor of why I watched them

My family is working on becoming a youtube family kinda yk like planning phase yk probs starting in the summer and all of us are happy about it not just the money aspect but i think its because now that we are all 7 - 13 we see the family channels as entertainment for a lot of little kids because ofc theres the weirdos but like theres the entertainment factor and also i feel like if those families that got wayyy to right didnt get too rich then every other kids would be rich because they’d see them and do the opposite soo. Also if we get big on youtube and other socials then I feel like yeah we will end up doing the same but from the aspect of a lot of kids are just interested in watching kids open toys and a lot of those families acctually donate all the toys because like yeah they’l get new ones and cycle them out. Also i know a lot of kids who watch these because some kids are less fortunate but it gives a sence of what they dont have but wish without pressuring anyone to be better or spend more.

It's child explotation. Children cannot give informed consent. AND. . . . . . . . Imagine growing up and realising some of the most embarrising moments of your life are online for millions too see...! Also, most of these 'parents' know that the people viewing their content are dodgy creepers, they KNOW... and are ok with it because it brings them the bucks. It is so abusive and just 100% wrong...
