There is nothing like top jazz musicians who can improvise and jam together to take you to outer space and back! All 4 of these guys are up there with the best of the best.

There’s another version of this that he does with Pat Metheny and Jack DeJohnette that is totally badass. And the hip hop version is “Cantaloop,” by Us Three.

Herbie Hancock is a true American treasure. I’ll never forget listening to “Head Hunters” for the first time and having one of those “HOW AM I JUST NOW HEARING THIS!?!” moments lol

Herbie Hancock was a child prodigy himself, he played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at 11.

Watching you watch perfection was worth every minute. So glad you GOT it! Absolute cream of the crop musicians all in their own right. Nice you had first exposure to them here. Come back with more, please.

Do you see how locked in these guys are, not only to the music but to each other? The joy that they have playing this music, and playing it with each other just jumps off the screen and takes up residence in your ears. Giants of jazz and jazz fusion. You have heard Wayne Shorter on Aja. Stanley Clarke spent a lot of time playing with Chick Corea’s various bands over the years as well as his own music. Just plain legendary.🔥🔥🔥

FYI, Cantaloupe Island was composed by Herbie Hancock and first appeared on his classic 1964 album Empyrean Isles with Hancock on keys, Freddie Hubbard on cornet and trumpet, Ron Carter bass, Tony Williams drums. The jazz-rap group Us3 sampled this on 1993's "Cantaloop", yes. Herbie is considered by "experts" and "historians" as one of the top 10 jazz pianists of all time, and Wayne Shorter is also considered one of the top 10 tenor & alto jazz sax players ever. He played with Miles in the 60's and had a string of phenomenal hard bop albums as a leader in the 1960's. He's one of the co-founders of Weather Report. You'd recognize Shorter from his iconic tenor solo on the title track of Steely Dan's Aja. Stanley Clark was the hand-picked bassist for Chick Corea's (RIP) fusion band Return to Forever. Legendary talent fills this stage. Thanks for posting. You have wonderful taste indeed!

Outstanding lineup. Hancock, Shorter and Hakim all played with Miles Davis at various times. Stanley Clarke played with the pioneering fusion band Return To Forever. They are all top shelf solo artists. As a bass player hearing Stanley Clarke's "I Wanna Play For You" album was life changing for me. Anyways great to come home after a frustrating day and listen to this.

Thanks, at least someone knows who these guys are and that they all spent time with Miles Davis, which is true for Chick Corea, may he Rest In Peace!

Jazz/Fusion legends! Glad to see you going here. I hope you look deeper. Return to Forever, Al DiMeola, Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorious...I could type all night and just scratch the surface! Your face when Stanley Clarke jams...awesome! Thank you

Only a peripheral jazz fan here, but even I knew who Omar Hakim was -- Weather Report, and later Sting's drummer when he went solo, and so many things in between. (And of course Herbie Hancock.) Thanks for introducing me to Mssrs. Shorter and Clarke.

If you're going down the Stanley Clarke route I'd go for "Journey to Love" and "Schooldays". Both these albums feature John Mc laughlin, Jeff Beck and Steve Gadd(plays drums on various Steely Dan tracks).

Wow, this was much much faster than the original.... Recommend checking out Herbie Hancock playing Watermelon Man live, with Christian MacBride on bass. He plays both versions, the original, and the funkier version he did with Headhunters..

Fantastic jazz by some true jazz fusion legends! I really love how Herbie teases everyone (including the band) with his 'outside' intro! Then they lock into that amazing nasty ass FUNKY groove and it's off to the races!!.It just can't get much better than this!

One really has to lament the loss of bands that actually had people able to play an instrument in them, and perform it for an audience.

Thanks for reacting to this! Not many KZbin music reactors seem to do jazz/jazz fusion or even smooth jazz. Some great ones are Brian Culbertson, Boney James, Fourplay, Spyro Gyra - the list just goes on and on!

What a treat! I can listen to this while working. The studio version is much darker. Also "Fat Albert Rotunda" (1960's?) and "Dis Iz Da Drum" (1990s) are completely different and great spins, even if you don't react.
