UK deer manager Paul Childerley is hunting moose in Swedish Lapland.
He came close to seeing one in Finland a few years ago. This time we’ve travelled inside the Arctic Circle during the rut so he has a greater chance of a close encounter, especially as top guide, Peter Johansson, is looking after him.
This is a conservation story. The local tourist board wants to attract more international hunters to save trees. It wants the local landowners to see the moose as a sustainable resource, instead of cutting down the forests for timber. Hunters preserve ecosystems.

Why do we support hunting tourism?
Hunting tourism is at the forefront of wildlife conservation. People going abroad to hunt are what pays for conservation, the world over. Species that hunters have brought back from the brink of extinction include the bontebok and the markhor goat.
The modern problem for trophy hunting began with the Cecil The Lion story in 2015, when a US hunting tourist called Walter Palmer shot a lion in Zimbabwe. The animal rights lobby successfully presented it as an animal called 'Cecil', claiming it was popular with tourists. Most of the money they raised from the Cecil incident paid for lobbying, not conservation. Worldwide government actions following the incident led to some of the biggest and most tragic wildlife slaughters ever seen in Africa. As trophy bans fell into place, wildlife poaching boomed.
By the beginning of 2018, a kneejerk US trophy import ban on Tanzanian elephant and lion trophies was beginning to have real - and potentially devastating - consequences, including the loss of decades of successful nature conservation. Happily, the US reversed that decision.
When it comes to wildlife, there are two kinds of African countries: wildlife winners, which allow hunting and have healthy populations of wildlife; and wildlife losers, where hunting is banned. It is no coincidence that the last northern white rhino died in Kenya, an anti-hunting country.
See an example of the arguments in action here: Fcha.nl/wildli...
We’re proud to promote enjoyment of fieldsports and the countryside. There are three guiding principles to everything we do on Fieldsports Channel:
▶ Shoot responsibly
▶ Respect the quarry
▶ Ensure a humane, clean and quick kill

Good clean shot. Though wonder if it would have been a little quicker with a heavier calibre. Bloody beaurocracy! I was clutching seeing Paul trying to keep the shot safe for the dog. Not sure I could feel comfortable with a dog in front of the gun.

Ahh, the Opera of the woods, hearing the dogs in the woods and instant small messages on the radio after that .

Are the moose just smaller in that part of the world or was it just a year or two old?

This bears repeating... I am shocked every week that with 311k+ subscribers, the video views, likes and comments are so low in number. As a Canadian, we are fighting our own fight here, but I believe the entire shooting and hunting community, world wide, must support each other...watch the videos, make a comment like and share. It's the only way KZbin will push these videos out to potential new viewers and supporters. Maybe it will bring middle of the road people over to this side and it might even convert the odd anti that doesn't realize he/she has been mislead

Interesting & a good job. Looks like a calf by the size of it & the short snout compared to Canadian moose. My Ontario bull this year at 150 yds with 30-06, 178 grain ELDX was hit twice in the "boiler-house" (chest) broadside, then one in the head from behind as it turned & ran like a tank. 200 yds up a path then down into the forestry to near a lake. When I tracked the animal & approached, it got up to run again so I hit it broadside twice again...5 shots into it, all on adrenaline! Weight was ~1100lbs in the gambrel.

While legal to run dogs for moose in some parts of Canada, we'd frown on walking up on a calf while following a GPS and shooting it. I wouldn't pay a dime for that.

In Sweden and Finland you just need to cut the moose population every year efficiently. In Sweden 100k and in Finland 70-100k to avoid forest distruction (they eat young forests during winter) traffic accidents and lost lifes. And with current splintered forest areas it would be difficult to hunt without dogs and modern GPS systems. Of course there are areas especially in Lapland where you have a chance to hunt more traditionally ways.

Sweden has to shot like 20 times the amount of moose annually than Canada. Not to mention that hunting moose with dogs is a cultural heritage over a thousand years old.
