Killer Whales: Up Close and Personal

During four years of shooting in the icy waters that surround the volcanic archipelago of the Crozet Islands, we have followed the trial and tribulations of Delphine, a young female adolescent killer whale. Living and growing within her family group she gradually learns how to find her bearings, how to hunt king penguins or Minke rorquals and how to get stranded in order to catch sea elephants.

Thanks all for your comments. I am the director of this film which was shot 23 years ago. I am glad to let you know that Delphine is still alive and is now the mother of 3 calves. We are returning again in Nov, 2023 in Crozet to meet her, and see how she now teaches her young to catch elephant seals on the beach. There is now 5 time more elephant seals than when we were shooting the film, so the intentional beaching technique is a skill that many orcas practice. To answer other questions I have seen, I shot the orca sharing the minke whale without any particular protection: the orcas were even pushing the carcass towards me as if to say " you want some ? please share that meal with us !" They even brought me pectoral fins of elephant seals, and were scouting at me when I was entering the water to pick up the RHIB we used for filming. Unfortunately, there is no making of footage of this, but we will make some this year !

@@dikshasoni. Yes!! I wasn't sure how to spell her mother's name. Do you know if that's accurate..or were you just taking a guess, lol. It 'phonetically' (sounds) like ..'Lee-sohn', to me, but being French, I wasn't sure how it is spelled. I have tried to find it on google search but can only find (so far).. as her being referred to as *A2*. It also says that she was given the name of **_*Mae_* , (by a Captain who's ship was stranded/shipwrecked) in, I believe.. 197'2'.. if I'm remembering correctly?? Interestingly, she was ALSO (self?)-stranded on the beach!!

It was great. Once saw a short of a pod after a seal on a small ice flow. Two in tandem tried to overturn the ice and succeeded when they were joined by a third. The teamwork was incredible. These are amazing creatures!

I love how while the male elephant seals are fighting for the position of beach master that in the background there is an entire beach full of penguins are all lined up watching the fight like its a pay per view event! By far the best documentary about Orcas I've ever seen. The way the family teaches the youngsters, the way they celebrate together and hunt together. It's never easy to see a penguin or seal turn into lunch, but Orcas gotta eat too. :) This was so great I'm going to recommend this video to everyone!

I was in Wrangel Narrows in Alaska's inside passage one afternoon. I was in a 15 ft. Skiff with a 40 horse outboard motor. There was a family of four Orcas. An adult male, female with their two twin baby calves I would guess were 6 months old. I approached them within 10 ft. When I saw them surface, I could see the males eye checking me out. His dorsal fin was as tall as a man. When they exhaled, it sounded like an explosion. Up close, these magnificent creatures are huge! There was a man sitting in a tiny dingy with his hat over his eyes and his fishing pole not far from shore. The two youngsters snuck up on him and breached on each side of him and came down with a big, giant splash! The poor fellow dropped his pole and nearly fell out of his boat. Orcas can be mischievous pranksters. The two calves then rejoined their parents. This was the wildlife experience of a lifetime. I do not fear them.

Thank you for this incredible video. Seeing Delphine and her family reminded me of Lolita and hers. Lolita is a Southern Resident captured in 1970 in Puget Sound, Washington. She has been living in the smallest orca tank in the world at the Miami Seaquarium for over 50 years. Lolita's ecotype, Southern Residents, are the most studied orca population in the world. Family members stay together their entire lives. L25 Ocean Sun, Lolita's mother, is estimated to be over 90 years old. Lolita had an older sister named Tsunami, who died in 1982. Ocean Sun has no immediate family left, but she has been taken in by another pod as their adoptive grandmother. She doesn't even know her daughter is still alive. Corky is the oldest orca in captivity. She is a Northern Resident from the A5 pod, A23 matriline. She was captured in 1969 in British Columbia. Corky's younger sister, Ripple, is now the leader of the pod. Other members include Corky's younger brother Fife, niece Midsummer, great-nephews Fern and Ne'nakw, and great-niece Eliot.

Plans are underway as of now to rehabilitate the now retired Tokitae (Lolita was just her stage name)in her Washington home waters after 52 years of captivity. She will be placed in a sea pen like Keiko was to get back in shape and relearn to hunt until her family passes through. She's been retired from performing a full year and MSQ wants her moved because she's just a financial liability to their new owner the Dolphin Company. All that's left right now is having the governor signing off the proper permits for her move!

It's an ugly necessary evil. It branches to all animals kept in zoos. The monkey, wolf, panda, bear, kangaroo, ostrich, dolphin, gazelle, hippo and so on. But they garner interest from the public. Ample number of people do it only to be entertained and go home, forget about it, or share their experience online. But the few people that are touched by seeing these animals, go on to help many many more. You can argue we can see them through video - but as an example and drawing on my own experience - I thought nothing of the 6 million Jews that died in WWII until I went to Berlin and saw the little golden plaques on the sidewalks. Suddenly it made it REAL. I felt the sorrow and sadness, the unwarranted persecution, and the guilt Germans feel. Yes we can watch Rhinoceroses in documentaries, but when you see one (at a zoo) they become REAL, as do the concerns and emotions that may lead one to help. It's horrible that animals are in zoos, but they are well cared for (bar some exceptions). The comparison would be to imagine your bedroom - in which you have everything you could possible want and need, but you cant leave it - people can watch you, and you have the ability to change their thoughts based on what you do. It's inhuman under such circumstances you're an object of reflection, and terrible you can never experience the wonders of the world, but you are making change - whether you want to or not.

They had to spend 4 long yrs. w/ an infinite patience so as to procure these incredible momentous shots one after another in the face of some adverse conditions at such a bleak, desolate, & inhospitable place, the Crozet Islands. It simply exhibits their single-minded determination & uncompromising dedication of the professional commitment for their crafts. Now I've gained better & new insights into the life & behavior of this sea creature. I do wonder how much of the narration is true and how much is anthropomorphic conjecture. It all seems plausible, but, really, we just don't know. I am curious to hear the story of how these orcas came to trust these divers. I understand they rescued Delphine, but I would be interested in more details on that story.

a good dose of skepticism is important in interpreting any animal behaviour, but I must tell you there are many decades worth of solid ethology studies done on these animals. scientists have been following the same families/pods over generations and comparing language, social, mating, rearing and hunting behaviour of different populations in different parts of the world. this data are solid and the interpretations are reliable, IMHO.
