Hamilton took a huge risk in resolving to throw away his first fire. He reasoned that Burr would be a man of integrity and would contemplate his aim against Hamilton, which ironically was the exact thing he was accusing Burr of not being. Burr was more of a soldier, and clearly more ruthless. I expect Hamilton realised too late his mistake, and got off his shot as he was falling. At that point in his life he had nothing left to prove, he was unlikely to command troops again, he should have just apologised, but it's very hard looking back to understand how much honour played a role in everything they did. If only people were so honourable now, the world would be better for it.
