Dramatic Rescue by Hyenas after a Lion Catches one

This amazing show of strong family bonds was captured on camera by Maddie Lowe while on safari with Margot Lowe and guide Witness Mathebule also known as De Beer. They shared their footage and story with LatestSightings.com.
During their adventure at@ArathusaSafariLodge in early August, they stumbled upon a jaw-dropping scene that unfolded before their lenses. This remarkable sighting witnessed in the heart of the African wilderness, showcases the power struggle between lions and hyenas and the remarkable unity of the hyena clan. Margot, Maddie, and De Beer were about to capture an incident that would leave them in awe of nature's raw intensity.
Margot and Maddie Lowe, from Australia, were on their second day of safari at@ArathusaSafariLodge, when they had returned to a sighting of a kill made by lions the previous day. However today there were no lions around but instead a clan of hyenas feeding on the remains.
Suddenly, there was a change in the atmosphere as some of the hyenas stopped feeding and became very weary. The group could sense that something was about to go down! But what? No one knew.
Then, out of nowhere, a huge male lion came charging in . The hyenas scattered in every direction and squealed with displeasure. Luckily for those hyenas who sensed the danger, their getaway was easy. The others who were too busy eating just managed to escape by mere inches!
However, one unluck y hyena was just not fast enough and was caught! The lion and hyena went tumbling in a full summersault. The lion’s powerful jaws closed around the hyena’s head in a deadly grip. The situation appeared dire for the hyena until something remarkable happened. Its clan rushed to its aid, demonstrating the close bonds that exist among these animals.
The clan began biting and nipping at the lion's back and hind legs. The lion tried to ignore the constant pestering from the hyenas but had no option and was forced to turn and face them. In the process, the hyenas were able to cause enough distraction that the poor hyena, which looked as if it had seen its last day, was able to break free!

not really, as all wild animals are tough and resilient. You have zebras or even gazelle that are latched on by a croc for 5 minutes and it often manages to survive. It´s much more difficult in all kinds of wildlife to kill than to be killed.

This was the Djuma clan and one of the Black Dam males on Djuma. Nghwazi is the hyena that was caught and he has a few marks on his head but he is doing great.

Incredible footage yet again from this brilliant channel. If you play it on slow and analyse the footage, you really get to see the little details in this brief skirmish. At 1:15 you will see the hyena closest to the camera notice something in the distance; no doubt the male lions pride members approaching. It's Fighting Tactics 101 for the whole bunch - the groin is a soft target with lots of major nerves and blood vessels, and injuries there can quickly disable the hind legs with obviously fatal results. Also difficult to defend given the eyes and fangs are at the other end. It's also Hunting Tactics 101 to attack that part for exactly those reasons, which is why you see all of them doing it all the time to buffalos and antelopes and what have you.

The male lion couldn't even seriously injure the hyena that grabbed it, and was severely counterattacked by the other hyenas. In the scene from 1:11～ the hyena is about to bite the male lion's face. The hyena that was bitten by the male lion suffered no injuries and is still healthy. A male lion should never meddle with a hyena alone unless in the company of two or more. A single male lion's attack cannot do much damage to a hyena, and a hyena can seriously injure a lion with a single bite.

There are multiple videos on youtube of lions attacking hyenas, but not a single single male lion has reliably killed an adult hyena. Hyenas are very powerful animals, and male lions are as difficult a task to take down an adult hyena as it is to take down a male cape buffalo. lioness can never kill an adult hyena, even if it's more than one, so she always runs away after being crushed by the hyena.

Hyenas have a very strong immune system, and even if they are seriously injured, they will not die from infection. In this video, the male lion who was attacked by the hyena and bitten all over its body is more likely to cause trouble in the future.

Lions are the top apex predator in the African bush. When it comes to the wild rivalry between lions and hyenas, the hyenas are *always* the underdogs. We all have a natural born tendency to "cheer" for the underdogs, and that's why it honestly surprises me that hyenas have been the "villains" for so long, but I'm happy to see they're finally, at long last, getting some long deserved love.

The painted dogs are about 1/3 of spotted hyena size, and spotted hyenas are about 1/3 _lioness_ size. (Male lions are meaningfully bigger natch.) But where even lone hyenas can get away with some frankly astonishing audacity against the doggos a solitary lioness is pretty much a goner if she runs into a hyena group, and even the big males need to watch their step around the buggers if they don't have the pride for support. What I'm getting at is spotted hyenas are disproportionately tough bastards for their size.
