Thanks for this video. It really shows how conditions can change our entire plans.

If this type of problem didn't happen, I wouldn't believe it was a true report of a long distance adventure, all makes for a richer story. Looking forward to part 3! Best of luck.

@WindsurfingNils Жыл бұрын

Awesome bro. I did a similar venture back in 85 when I spent 8 months constantly windsurfing around the islands of Greece. I must total the Kms one day but I estimate it's close to 10k. All the best

Don't be too hard on yourself! You can't control nature, this is the beauty of the sport. Exaclty why this is a hard challenge and when you succeed, it will 100x worth. Stay safe!

i think i picked a difficult time with the conditions in winter being mostly wind from the south...

Be honest, you made the whole thing up, just so your dad can save you from the sea an be proud about it. ;-)

Ouch, that narrow speed board is indeed a mess without wind.

How frustrating, but it's what you said, you are depending on nature and all its quirks. I find it awesome that you also show the "bad parts" and don't just skip them in the video. Also great attitude that you will try again and not skip the cliff section. I'm rooting for you! Thank you for the video!

the cliff section is done now, coming in the next episode ;)

The struggle will be the best moment in time. A guy I worked for a long time ago, always told me that I would remember the bad times with a smile and I would forget the good (an often easy) times. He was right. Keep on fighting Nils.

I totally understand of course. The LT makes going upwind and tacking so much easier and therefore better suited for long distance. Anyway, keep up the good work, I love this journey 🤙

Thank you Nils for this "reportage". Congratulations that you are able to share also what is not so successfull. All sailers, windsurfers, all of us need to know/learn that nature is always stronger, also when it is calm, peacefull. No wind can be a very dangerous enemy. Happy that you could get back safely. Respect to you. Looking forward to your next video/episode. I learn a lot from your channel, as well as from friend's ones.

Glad that you got back to safety. I've never heard of sea sickness on a windsurfing before. Those conditions show you the uncertainty of the sea and wind. Looking forward to part 3!

Great video about a struggle instead of a smooth ride. Thanks for sharing. Another thing that is to be mentioned is that you had a back up for if things go wrong at open sea. That is the true message of this episode Succes with you journey
@WindsurfingNils Жыл бұрын
very true, always important to think about the safety aspect first when doing things like that, hopefully from here on out the journey is going to be smoother, although the wind has completely died off for now, so i'm waiting for conditions now...

I am doing also this kind of navigation for some years already and what can I say is that the windsurf sails are not good for upwind, doesn't matter of the shape of it. I am using a wing, a board with central fin or dagger and always I have a paddle with me and a leash. Very important: paddle and leash. It may save your life...

It's not a good feeling when you feel threatened by the sea. You know it's power but you think you have the tools to harness that power. One time I was 5 miles offshore and my harness line broke. The wind waves were huge (taller than me). I really didn't think I would make it back but somehow I did. I'm glad, for you, that your parents were there. Events like this make it an "adventure".

Hi Nils!
@derluke1 Жыл бұрын
Before tack, move the mast back, lift the daggerboard a bit, that the board turns better and quicker. With the mast back, less board is in the water and don't generate so much force into the sail. With the swell I would also move the mast a bit more back, around position 4-5.
@WindsurfingNils Жыл бұрын
I'll try that!

Is this race board the best choice? Maybe you could use a wider one so you are more stable. Also would you use a lighter sail with no cambers? Must be frustrating not to see any progress. It's always important to be prepared for the worst case. Shouldn't we always, even if we go freeriding, take a phone with us?
@WindsurfingNils Жыл бұрын
I always use camber sails, this 7.8 is not tiring and way more stable than a no cam

De-rigging a sail in water is not that difficult. I had do it when my u-joint snapped in a typhoon miles off the coast south of Tokyo years ago. Stacked the mast, boom and rolled up sail on the board and stuffed the battens down the back of my wetsuit and managed to save everything after paddling for many hours back to shore. Dragging the rig seems pretty silly. At least you’re alive and we’ll what happens next.
@firstnamelastname2669 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if you could have made it if you had a paddle. Narrow raceboards aren't the easiest to paddle in swell, so not sure.
