I’ve been windsurfing for a long time and have seen many sail rigging videos . I almost passed this one up because I didn’t know what I could still learn. Well, I was very wrong. This is by far the best sail rigging video I’ve ever seen. I really appreciate you explaining not only how to make adjustments but what they are actually doing to the sail and how to check that the adjustments were done properly. Very well done!

This was EXCELLENT content. I really adore❤ the way you are explaining these subjects. I’ve got two questions for you: 1) If you are in the mood, would you please explain in detail how to properly rail a slalom board to make it ride as loose as possible (without loosing control). 2) I noted (@19;29) you have the point 7 F1 variable harness lines (which are great (!) by the way), but you have two “clamp cleats” instead of the regular one sided. Any reasons for that? BIG thanks for putting all the effort into making these videos, really appreciated!🤙🙌
@WindsurfingNils

1) i have a video on how to rail a board, just look at my channel 2) the double cleat F1 Pro lines have twice the range so one line for both fin and foil

I have watched so many of these that, like others, I was going to pass on it. So glad I didn't. I've never learnt so much as to what and why things need to be done and the cause and effect of each action from one video. Thanks Nils. I've only spent the last 13 years doing it completely wrong without any understanding as to why things just never feel right.

Have to agree with others that it is the best rigging video I have seen and to be honest I have viewed a lot of them in the past. I like you approach the topic like an engineer and explain why some things are done this or that way. I just came from water and before trimmer my wave sail according to your concepts. I’m using it with my small slalom board. It was working nicely and felt neutral and controllable both while over and under powered. Really like your channel, especially the fin stuff :) K

Nils, what a great informative video. Unfortunately I’ll need to go and check all my sails now for correct batten tension! Also good to see a full explanation on how to achieve correct downhaul setting. Does the same principle (downhaul and battens) hold true for foil sails?
@WindsurfingNils
@WindsurfingNils Ай бұрын
basically yes, batten 5 can have a little more tension so the sail only starts to really open from there

Thanks Nils. Awesome sharing. May i know how to add the spacer in the camber sails, or can we adjust the batten tension to make the camber stiff?
@WindsurfingNils
@WindsurfingNils Ай бұрын
just take the camber off and put the spacer on the end of the batten, batten tension and adding spacers is not the same ;)

Vielen dank Nils! Very informative, especially about the batten tention. There where you talk about zero tension on the battens from batten 2, 3, 4, 5. Does this counts for every camber sail? Or just for your Point-7 sails? And I didn'y understand correctly batten no 7. Do you mean, no natural S shape there? Again vielen dank, from the Netherland!
@WindsurfingNils
@WindsurfingNils Ай бұрын
batten 7 has more tension so it's not really s shaped, yes the basic principles apply to all foil sails.

Can you please help me out a bit? Yesterday I tried out the tuning tips and went out with my cambered 8.5 freerace sail. In the very strong gusts (~45 kmh) I felt that the sail wanted to open on its own and needed a lot of backhand force to keep it closed. Does this indicate a rigging / tuning mistake or harness line / stance problems? Thanks very much!
@robinsrealm983
@robinsrealm983 Ай бұрын
This we call being "overpowered": too much size sail for the wind that is blowing. (Sometimes you will even feel you have to Push on the boom with your front hand, as you pull hard on the back). You could move your harness lines back toward the clew a bit, to compensate, if you felt like that "opening" pull was happening too frequently during your session.
@robinsrealm983
@robinsrealm983 Ай бұрын
* moving harness lines away from the mast = greater leverage. (Works the opposite for sailing Underpowered - too small a sail for the wind: move the harness lines a bit towards the mast, for easier handling, better power. These adjustments will be made for each session, from an average starting point on your boom for that sail size. (Handy to mark boom)
@TopMaphis
@TopMaphis Ай бұрын
@@robinsrealm983 Thanks for the knowledge Robin! Would more downhaul help this feeling? Unfortunately my homespot is a lake which is very-very gusty. The session described above was a prime exampe. Bythe time you adjust anything, you already hit a lull, where you require another setting on the sail. I've tried to adopt with harness last time, then there was no drive for that . :)

Hi Nils, thanks - great video. Could you do another video to explainfine tuning for speed? I recently emailed Andrea and he said slightly more downhaul for speed and the flatter the sail(up to a point) the faster but I’ve not heard that before. I pretty much always set my sails for speed the way you explained it here with only difference being no tension on the outhaul.

I often see grooves in my sail along the battens after I have eliminated the wrinkles 😂. I'll correct this now, thank you very much! But I have a question please. The lowest batten in my 8.0 NCX (no cam freerace/slalom) is protruding too much into the mast sleeve and is hard to rotate. Now i'll reduce some tension, and use the higher outhaul eye let. but what can one do if a batten still protrudes too much, until the front of the mast?
