What to do About a Black Toenail

I developed a black toenail after hiking about 4 months ago. There has never been pain or discomfort and the nail is not loose at all. Will the body re-absorb the blood at some point and clear it up?

My girlfriend was a Scottish highland dancer in her youth. She told me her nails would often turn black and then fall off and just regrow back in again. She just got used to it, i guess.
