Living on a ship is like living in a different world. It's a wonderful experience but like everything in life there are two sides to everything. This is not me complaining but showing that there is more to this than just travelling the world. I love what I'm doing and I'm so grateful for this experience. I don't have "pinch me" moments but rather "punch me" moments haha. xoxo Huong

I have been with a cruise line for 15 years. I started out as an assistant junior purser and I am now a 3 stripe officer. It is probably the hardest thing you will do is get on the ship for your first contract. You will share a tiny cabin, you have no friends, you will work long days, no days off, you have no privacy. I wanted to quit. But my manager said it will get better day by day, you get used to it and he was right. You make the friends with people all over the world, you fall in love (many times), you see more places than most people will ever see. I have been to 33 countries so far. If you are good you will get promoted. If you become an officer you get your own cabin, more money, more perks. Eventually you can't imagine doing anything else. You finish your contract and you are exhausted but after awhile you start to miss being on the ship, seeing your friends, being part of something great!

@@ocean.w.a.v.e.s Good for you. Some of the photographers onboard are amazing. They take 10 years off you. Funny story for you. I was on board years ago and the photo department had their door open. There was a framed photo of the captain with a young lady with him. I said is that his daughter? They blushed and said, that's his wife. She had to be 20 years younger than him if not 25. All the bridge officer's seem to atract beautiful women. One Staff Captain I know, is good looking and he has a girlfriend in every port. All I get are passenger complaints!

I'm a flight attendant, we are required to get 24 hours off in a seven day period, the aft of the plane is warmer the only problem I had was my skin on my face got sooooo dry and got a little motion sickness. The crew cabin on a ship is probably the size of the galley on a plane, maybe smaller than the galley, and I'm glad I get to go to a hotel on trips and we get our own rooms. I definitely couldn't work on a cruise ship, I like having my me time and going home (well my base since I'm not a commuter) I thought about working on a ship for a hot minute but I like having my space after work.

I agree with you Huong. I use to work on a cruise ship but quit because of bullying,exploitation,poor pay and losing my health etc. You work 12 hour days/7 days a week,you only get 4 to 6 sleep a night if you are lucky and there is no time for friendships etc. I was so glad when I left.

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have a good experience working on board. I think a lot depends on your position, the crew welfare and the people around you. It certainly isn't always easy. So far I've been very lucky to be surrounded by amazing people. And you are right, working on board is not really the healthiest things do to. When I'm home I try to eat as healthy as possible, sleep as much as I can and just relax. Thanks for sharing your feedback thought! :) cheers, Huong

Yellowstone national park in Wyoming really gives you lots of info. These ships aren't saying what your food and rent cost, what your room looks lie, how many people are in your room, what is your salary, basically no info at all. I'm seeing where they have a real issue finding and keeping staff. It's pathetic.

Depends, I'm a deck officer (2nd Officer NAV) atm but so true about cooking. I can order stuff to my room, go to the Wardroom or the mess but the best you can hope for is a kettle. I used to let other crew reheat stuff in my microwave once and a while but never used the thing. I'd swap the double bed and window for one hot plate stove! Most have it rough though. Never seen F&B staff last longer than two contracts unfortunately just because their down lower, four to a room and I don't blame them for getting drunk every chance. Works for some but not for most. Best advice - don't screw the crew!
@burningblue1254
@burningblue1254 3 жыл бұрын
Ahhh a Navi officer and 2nd officer of the watch. I would never swap my bed or a window for anything! The newer ships are better for crew. Bigger, nicer, your own bathroom. Don't screw the crew. That coming from the bridge! Most Navi guys seem to enjoy that. I know a staff captain who is married, gets a gf on every ship, and has gf in various ports. I respect the rank but not always who is wearing it.

I had hoped the pay was good but from what I was told it wasn't anything crazy. Suppose it is what you make it. @ОльгаСорокина-я3с 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, I see :) I am just saying my personal opinion. Lately I have been thinking about applying on a cruise ship but after considering the job opportunities and work conditions, I came to the conclusion that this type of job may be extremely tough for some individuals ( like myself) who don't like being closed up in a limited space 24/7 . And there are NO internet on some cruise ships for staff members , you can only have a proper internet connection while staying at ports ( provided that you have a rest at this time) unless you are willing to pay ridiculously big amounts of money and use paid wi-fi service on board. Besides that I read that a lot of people tend to gain weight on board due to the lack of movement for months. Besides that, the shared cabins of total area that equals to maybe max 10 square meters and permanent surveillance is something that seems like a really shitty option to me. I am not saying that this is a bad job. It just doesn't seem appealing to me and it doesn't correspond 100% to the image of the lifestyle promoted by the hiring agencies when they are talking about being a crew member on a cruise ship. Thank you for your videos anyway! They helped me to figure out a lot of things !

@@ОльгаСорокина-я3с You aren't closed up 24/7, a lot depends on your job. What kind of job are you interested in? The internet is a lot better than it used to be, as well depending on the port, you can access the free tourist wifi on the ship. Some gain weight because you can eat all you want and they don't exercise. I eat healthy and I use the fitness center. Also, once you become an officer, everything is better, you get your own cabin, more money, better perks.

Hi heyhuong I know two girls who just started working on a cruise ship in Europe. The contracts states 8 hours each shift with overtime over 8 hours. Six days work with one day off. I'm wondering if that is even possible after reading comments about working long hours 7 days a week. Before they signed the contract I told them to read it carefully and ask questions. They also mention a free round trip ticket home after a year and two weeks paid vacation. They are hired to work Food and Beverage if that might mean anything regarding the hours they work. What do you think? Hopefully I hear from them when they are settled in. I got a couple emails while they were on land during orientation but since they boarded the ship I have not heard anything.
@heyhuong
@heyhuong 7 жыл бұрын
Well, I can't give you a clear answer to that as I'm not an expert in this. I can just share my experience. Working in F&B is always tough, on land and on board for sure. It's definitely a tough job and I hope they settled in well. At the beginning it's always a little hard to touch base with friends and family because you need time to adjust with the new environment first. And when you have some time you just wanna sleep! I hope you heard from them by now! :)
@samthepoet107
@samthepoet107 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, heyhuong I heard from them a few days ago. I'm told the work is hard averaging about 12 hours a day but they get one day off. But I'm told that even though its' hard it's still better than in their country where they would make very little money. On another note men working on the ship waste no time trying to romance them. I saw a video where a girl mentions this happens on just about every cruise ship. Any advice how girls should deal with that? For now I said best to just say they are there to work and save for their future and smile and keep busy. I think getting mad or complaining to higher ups could backfire. When you're new the last thing you don't want is to make enemies. Not every man can take rejection easily. Some might want to create trouble. Where I live I know someone from Thailand who was working in a Thai restaurant. A cook there tried to romance her but she was not interested and told him. Anyway it reached the point where she told him a few things that got him angry. So he told the boss to fire her or else he would leave the job. The boss told her that she badly needs a cook and that he cooks well, and that without a good cook her business would suffer. So she fired her. But in her case she is on land so she easily found another job. But on a ship they are trapped with such people that is why I think one has to be diplomatic dealing with unwanted romance. What do you think?

I think I'm one of the few who doesn't find travelling let alone working on a cruise appealing. From what I've heard, it sounds like a frat house with lots of drinking and bed hopping happening. That part might sound fun if you're young, but then there are the oppressive living conditions, the very low pay, the free yet horrible food, and let's not forget the LIMITED travel opportunities---you visit various ports, yet you're only there for a few hours so that doesn't give you much time to check out places!
@heyhuong
@heyhuong 6 жыл бұрын
I absolutely understand your point and I think there a lot of other who would agree with you. It's definitely not everybody's thing! Everything has it's pros and cons anyway. Regarding the travel opportunities, it is true that you are kinda limited but if it's not a crossing, then you will come back to the ports frequently which gives you time to discover more with each visit. And it depends on how you use that time. I'd see some people really use that opportunity. And even if it's "limited" you still see places you never thought you would. It's all about perspective :)

Its not for everyone for sure. I have 15 years in and I am now the passenger services director with 3 stripes. The drinking and bed hopping is typical for the youngsters but senior crew are past that. We have a few drinks yes. I now have my own cabin get well paid and have other perks. The food is ok as far as I am concerned. Sometimes we have the left over food from the passengers. Also, as mentioned, the ships are usually in port 6 to 8 hours although some do 1 or 2 overnights. So if you have 3 hours its enough time to walk around or go to a bar or restaurant, the beach etc. You can also take a taxi to a tourist site. When you come back, you do something else. I have been to the Caribbean so many times the locals know my name.

I am a massage therapist and I am thinking to work on a cruise! I do work 7 days at my job and I don't go out a lot! Everybody thinks I should be working on a cruise! I don't like that your skin suffers from the lack of natural air and sunlight! That's a shame! Can you go walk around in the ship like go to near the pool for some fresh air?
@heyhuong
@heyhuong 7 жыл бұрын
Well, it’s not like you don’t get to go out at all. It depends on your schedule. Regarding the skin issue: it did affect my skin but I made sure to take care of my ski as good as possible and always put lotion on etc. whether you can walk around in the passenger area depends on the company but generally I would say yes.

I can't 100% agree with what you said. I'm a 5 year veteran cruise ship employee and. When I first started I was the only person from my country on that ship. I kept my mindset on the job and made very good friends in the process.yes you had one or 2 ass clowns but it comes with the job. As for the fresh air we had a crew deck where we could have chilled , relaxed or go into the hot tub. You can't judge an experience like that in 5 months we had 10 month contracts and if we didnt want to go back we let them know. I agree with the 7 day work week but there are some bosses who reward their staff with time off for doing good work which was motivation for us. As the time in port we used to hang as a group. A no man left behind mentality. Say if we go to for example senior frogs, there was always a group of us and we never left until we are sure everyone was accounted for and if someone left early someone was with them.

+Jason Robinson thanks for your comment! :) sorry for the late reply. Just to clarify I didn't have any intentions to 'bash' about the life on board if that's how it came across to you. I'm on my 3rd right now and I still enjoy it very much. When I did this video it was more about pointing out the 'not so wonderful and fancy' aspects of working on board. Just like with everything else there are good and the not so good sides. I don't think that I was being judgmental in the video but just sharing my point of views. And yes you are right the people you meet on board are beyond wonderful! Overall it's an amazing experience!

Hey, sorry for the late reply! As I'm still working on the ship I have limited access to proper internet. I'm working in the hotel department and have high customer contact. Ship life is not for everyone. People's situations change. They get married have kids. Its not the life for everyone. It doesn't mean you are weak. Its a choice. Also who made you God and decide what is right and wrong and who is weak? If you worked for me and I heard you say that, you and I would have a frank discussion about bullying and harassment. On my cruise line if you bully or harass another crew member, first time you get a verbal warning and documented on your file, next time you get a letter stating the consequences of your behavior, third time you appear in front of the captain and unless you have a very very good explanation, you are off the ship as early as 8 am next day at port with an airport. You pay for the flight home. Also you are confined to cabin until ship departure. If your behavior is menacing, we will assign a guard outside your cabin or if you are considered a threat to ship safety you will be put in the brig. Enough said!
