Making Game of Thrones movie armour: I build an epic Game of Thrones Armor for myself! Join me as I build a full steel Jorah Mormont Armour for my Halloween costume and show you how to build armor from start to finish. Using 18 Ga Mild steel, I create everything from scratch to complete the finished breastplate. You get to see the whole process of forming the chest plate, back plate, cutting leather straps, installing buckles and rivets, shaping and cutting steel and aging everything to make it look old and used. This is one of my favourite GOT armour!!

That was really interesting! When I was a kid I used to watch all of the sword and sandal movies on Saturday afternoons, and I LOVED the ancient Greek and Roman swords (props).they used in these movies! I used to think "When I grow up in going to get me one of those swords!" And it wasn't until many decades later that I discovered what the real ones looked like, and they look nothing like the movie prop swords. I was very disappointed.

Thank you very much. I am a senior woman who is pretty good on a sewing machine, but I find armor construction fascinating. Subscribed. Jorah is my favorite character of the GOT series. He is the only character who continually wrapped the palms of his hands. Someone thought that might be to improve his grip on his broadsword. Perhaps you know the explanation?
@DrawbridgeProps
@DrawbridgeProps 5 жыл бұрын
I love the layers of that costume too! Fabric on our palms can be both good and bad. I like to train with gloves and without. I would assume that it is a layer of protection from both the elements and swords strikes in the case of Jorah. My favourite character too!

As far as the width across the chest... I have been making stuff like what you just did, ( although most is made from leather ) for quite some time, and I have found out that a good rule of thumb is making the chest width 10 to 12 inches across. Now all my armor was made to fight in, not just for looks as in costuming.
@DrawbridgeProps
@DrawbridgeProps 5 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. Even when I build costume armour for movies I try to keep the actor’s mobility in mind. Even on Warcraft where the armour was way over sized I was able to get full range of motion based on the design. In some cases the armorsmiths for movies (or the costume designers) disregard reality and they end up with designs like this. GOT was especially bad with multiple chest plates being way to wide to be functional.

At the moment I can't afford a metal bead roller (and I don't want to buy something cheap) but I still want it to be as good as possible. At the metal plate I tried it on the edge was very flat, it simply doesen't look that good. I try to find the information how to do it without the bead roller but I think I simply don't know the right place to ask or right channel to watch it. Any advices please? :)

I made half rolled and full rolled edges many times before getting a bead roller. I made some long hinges by hand in my Lannister helmet video that shows the basic technique. This one was 18 ga or 0.048” and took probably 20 hours.

I know you tried to match it closely to the show (and you did a great job with that!), but shouldn't a breastplate be a lot less flat? This bothers me more than it probably should, but because of this all the armor in the show screams "not real"

Breastplates can have all sorts of shapes. This one is super flat and the waist is too low to be able to bend properly. I would guess that the lower belly plate was probably painted leather as it appears quite folded in the show. Oh the woes of movie armour. I have to say I hate back scabbards and female Characters wearing next to nothing way more than I dislike the armour in got. It all has a very fantastic element to it which adds to the whimsy of the dragons. I am tempted to make a Theon Greyjoy armour next.

I actually don't dislike back scabbards that much. Even though the aren't functional, they somehow "fit" the aesthetic. Theon's armour is really cool. Especially the pauldrons.

I love the pauldrons and the sigil that is torn on his breastplate.

Hey man I usually really like your stuff but i dont like this one. You could have made a really awesome functional peace of Game of Thrones styled Armor but you just diddn't. You even said that you could have opened up the arm pits more to allow for normal movement in combat. You could have shortened the brestplate to allow you to bend over and why did you rivet on the fold? It is there to allow you to move and still be protected. I just see a lot of wastet potential in this video whitch is sad. Sorry for the bad grammar and spelling I'm german.

Thanks for that feedback. This one was supposed to be closer to the show. I actually kinda wish I had varied a bit more from the design. On the next one I won’t be so literal.

I Never liked Jorah's armor? It looked cheap and the shoulders looked really uncomfortable.

That’s really bad armor, too easy to get a blade in between the shoulder and chest plate.

If you want to make a functional breastplate, don't make the one in the video. As a matter of fact, most movie armor is usually so far off the mark, just don't. If the purpose is purely a wall hanger / cosplay, sure whatever. Real armor, as seen in museums, is cooler. Recreate that instead and fancy it up with fantasy things if you must (imo).
