Exactly what I wanted. I have an old cloth eyepatch from ages ago from an eye injury. The elastic wore out so I said "I'll add a sturdy strap to it some day." Well I've started playing with leather and found the eye patch and said "maybe I should just make leather eyepatches to sell" and here I am. Looking at your video. And now I just have to design my own actual design so I don't get into trouble and Bob is not my uncle, he may be yours though.

It's true! Often times eyepatches were simply for better vision during the night/dark places in the ship! NIGHT VISION!
@nextlifeonearth5 жыл бұрын
I can at least confirm that it works. When going from the bright outside to a dark inside having one eye used to the dark already helps you to see in the dark.

The military in general uses similar techniques, infantry at night when flares pop, ships crews going out on watch at night, etc

Now for a more general comment. Been buying custom made eye patches for awhile now and they are the most comfortable. The metal rivets tho, not sure those would be comfortable wearing for 16 hours, they may dig in. Going to try making my own now thanks for the vid. I always wondered how they shaped the patch. 10 yrs ago the 1st guy actually had me make a plaster mold of my left side so he could shape the patch to my eye socket, but he got good enough shaping the leather that he no longer needed that. Also wondered how he sealed the edges, now I know, so kool. Subscribed and now will join to get the pattern. Also, one more and I will shut up, I’ll use different dies to match my different clothes so I can be color coordinated, lol. Do not wear it much, but I have a dark blue suit I always wanted to match my patch to, and tooling like a good ‘fk off’ on the matching patch will surprise some folks - again, lol. I have a black one now with white lettering now, ‘SYLO’

Do you oil the patch after? How long does the shape last after it's formed? I'd like to add white to the top of the black color can I add alcohol white paint as well? Thanks
@DrawbridgeProps Жыл бұрын
They can be oiled but it’s not necessary. The shape lasts forever in less you try to flatten it with something heavy. Paint after dye, before waxing.

Daniel Kingsley laser? Please elaborate? Eyes on patches are so normal, everybody says that.... Maybe a dragon eye, but be more creative. I hear pirate jokes all day long, butt I tell people I like to be more creative than, ‘where’s your parrot?’. That’s how I got the roadname ‘DeadEye’. Years ago, like 20, I took some Miami Dolphins fabric and glued it to a normal over the counter eye patch once, that was hit every where I went, but especially at the stadium....

How long did you leave the steel wool in the vinegar for the stain you made?

24 hours minimum. But I leave it forever. I have vinagroon that I mixed up years ago that still works.

This is very cool. Do you feel the rivet against your face with the rivet setup? I'm looking for a good pattern for my friend who went blind in one eye (but can still see some light that confuses his brain) & I want it to be comfortable. I don't have any leather this thick so I'm wondering if it can be done with thinner leather in multiple layers?

It's the collagen in the Kangaroo Lace. Every animal has a unique way their skin produces collagen. Once its tanned into leather the collagen determines how the leather stretches or not. Kangaroo hide has a very tight collagen matrix. Which makes it very tough stuff.

Thank you for your amazing video tutorials. I’m from Philippines and I lost my right eye during my work in Iraq and I’m using an eye patch on glasses. It’s irritating to wear everyday. Does the eye patch available on your website is ready to wear or the pattern only for making it? And last can I pay it through Western Union? Thanks and godbless

I just bought a nice white bone color eye patch.... I had the front half of my eye removed at 19. Is it ok to paint it w acrylic paint?? Like paint a design on it?? I kinda already started...
@DrawbridgeProps4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the finish but I would just do it. Worst that could happen with acrylics is that it will run off and you’ll have to do it again.

That is most likely a Hollywood story. I never heard of this until a year or two ago, and I consider myself to be alright with sailor history. If this was true, it wouldn't have been just pirates or sailor's, but a lot of people who have similar scenarios outside the deep blue pond

Hello :) do you think these designs would be comfortable to be used on a daily basis? I’m 25 with a glass eye/prosthetic (right eye) and I was thinking on switching to an eye patch. Sadly the standard ones where I live (New Zealand) are just these terrible medical ones. Thank you very much for the video and the suggestions for tools and materials required! Very very interesting. Subscribed! PS your videography/editing is such high quality dude! Seriously, awesome!

Hey Jared! Thanks for the kind words. I would think the style that sits up on your eyebrow would be slightly better than the small ones that sit inside the eye socket. I would imagine like anything, you would end up with a couple of different patches for different occasions. I would also consider a smooth lining leather glued on the black if you’re going to wear them a lot.

Del McRea I have been wearing custom made eye patches like the one he said over the eyebrow w/o rivets for years and they are the most comfortable of any I have worn since 1981. Like u say, it was life transforming for me to find a comfortable stylish one vs the over the counter ones I’ve bought. When working and sweating, I use the cheap ones, but even during break I find myself slipping on the leather ones. Now I plan on making my own thanks to the vid and patterns. I will use different color dies too, and man the fun I can have with the tooling and sayings.. like NYB - none yer business, lol....

No way would anyone go w/o any depth perception for any time just to see in the dark. I have one usable eye and wear eye patches every day of my life and no depth perception while working with my hands is difficult. Imagine if you will being on a rolling and rocking ship and choosing to give up depth perception so you can go into a dark hold.... special forces, lol....
