This is a 13 minutes video showing how I drew a dog's nose using coloured pencils. I'll talk you through how to add layers of colour to create a realistic looking nose, how to gently blend colours together and which are the best pencils to use to blend and smooth. It's 5x speed with areas of real time, but you can see how i use my pencils to create the effects I want, and how I build up the tonal values, almost sculpting to create a 3D nose with depth.
I've used the following pencils:
Faber Castell Polychromos:
Cinnamon, caput mortuum, caput mortuum violet, dark indigo, white, light flesh, burnt carmine, light purple pink, black
Caran D'Ache
Light grey
Derwent Lightfast
Flesh pink, white

Hi Bonny, thanks for taking the time out to share this information. I have a commission to do of a Chocolate Labrador and wondered what colour paper it would be best to start with and what particular colours you would use to create the artwork. I have Polychromos 120 set of coloured pencils and the vast amount of colours from which to choose from, is quite daunting !!

This is incredible and so helpful. I am stunned by how realistic your portraits are! I was wondering how you do the fine lines by the eye? I try using white pencil but either it won't show because the layers too dark or the line is too thick. Any help will be appreciated! x

Excellent tutorial - do you have any other videos using pencils other than Polychromos? I have many different pencils like Holbein and Prisma but got rid of the Polychromos as they have so little pigment and they break so easily. Just wondered, I'm trying to find a comparison chart to change from Polychromos to Holbein etc. for colors. Thanks
@BonnySnowdonAcademy

Thank you :) I don't use prismas or Helbein as I need to be careful of lightfastness. Have a look at Karen Hull's website - she has some excellent comparison charts :)

One other idea if you intend to do tutorial, real time, videos..........keep them to 4/5 individual parts 6 max and on the first video add a reference picture pdf for download so viewers can follow. Some artists add the picture in advance personally I think it isn’t necessary but that entirely your choice. It feels as though I’m sticking my nose in but honestly I’m not I just want to help. Also if doing a dog named Jon.........it is useful for the viewer if in video 1. The title is JON- Nose & eyes, in video 2. The title is JON- ears. and so on.

Do you free hand draw the dog? Do you scan it ?
@BonnySnowdonAcademy
@BonnySnowdonAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
This one was a bit of freehand and a bit of projector as his owner wanted his lip in a different position as it was curled under. I tend to project a very quick outline as it speeds things up considerably. Before I got so busy I freehanded everything, now I use a basic outline and freehand all the inside bits :)
