Drawing a proportionate cube with the ellipse method

A quick video demonstrating the process of this technique.
The ellipse can be used to locate vanishing points that are far off the border of the page. The result is that we get natural looking cubes/perspectives every time when using this method, completely free from distortion.

is the point of rotation, 1:04 , taken arbitrarily?

You can choose any point along the curve of the ellipse as a point of rotation. Just make sure draw the straight line perfectly tangent with that curve

Is it possible to use something like this method to place a proportionate cube in a pre existing set of vanishing points?

You can reverse engineer it that way, although it is a lot trickier.

Why the bottom ellipse is narrower

The bottom ellipse is closer to the horizon line because we are looking at the cube from below. So therefore it appears narrower than the top ellipse
