DRAWING from MEMORY! 15 Minutes to REMEMBER Reference PHOTO!! || Art Challenge

In this drawing challenge video, I spend 15 minutes trying to remember a reference photo of the Witch from Snow White, then I attempt to draw the cartoon character from memory, without looking at my reference again.

I developed an infection that not only killed my creativity and ability to see images in my head, but also shot my memory. I have the memory of someone who’s in the initial stages of early young dementia. I get frustrated at the prospect of not having a reference, which sometimes it’s important to pull ideas out of your memory bank because you may be trying to convey a mood, pose or colors that don’t exist in any reference. Imagination makes your piece unique and I’m afraid I’ve lost that ability to “see” with my mind’s eye.

Hello, I really admire your work in realistic drawings, and I'm looking to buy some loose polychrome pencils, but I just want the colors for me to make light and dark skin, could you give me the numbers that I need the faber polychrome pencils for me to get?

I Just came back after 4 month of being keyboard enthusiast and now i still figured out how this guy still drawing with polychromos. Last time i heard he want to change to Luminances. Basically thats all fine because polychromos has better detail lol

Depends on your goal, but I personally would try Faber Castell classics or Prismacolor pencils because I am a photo realistic artist, I don't know of the best pencil that are cheap, only a couple, but I will be making a video on the subject and seeing what I find online and in my local art shop. 😊

So given the fact that you're an artist that focuses a lot on details, I don't believe you cheated on a 15 min study of a 2D cartoon. You brain probably took the cartoon and analyzed it as shapes with a main focus on the eyebrows and nose. On a side note: I'm really interested in learning hyper realism drawing and would love seeing some more video pointers.

This is not that hard as it seems, as it's basically simple line work. Rendering realistically without reference is what separates the average artist from the best artists. I'm not saying drawing from reference is bad, because everything we draw is essentially inspired by something we have seen. But drawing directly from reference "although educational" becomes mundane. You eventually grow tired of it, as there is little challenge, and less satisfaction copying images, and one might come to the point when they say to themselves " why not just take a picture instead?". Yes it's impressive to see someone draw exactly what they ses from reference, but when copying, your art lacks a deep artistic appearance, when compared to drawing and rendering from memory and the understanding of light, shadows and reflection as well as how to render different textures and materials, such as water, glass, chrome, ect. When I wanted realism, I used to draw from reference, for years . Until I saw Chip foose draw. Sure he draws from reference, but not exclusively, and when he does, he makes it his own, by making what ever colors and textures he wants, as well as being able to render entirely from his mind. And when I compare his work with the best "reference only realistic artists" his work leaves them in the dust, because he's able to render even better than real life. I'll think drawings that are done from your mind, are far more artistically pleasing than copying, even when they are done in loose ideation or rough concepts, because you can put the emphasis of lighting,color and depth of reflection and shadows anywhere you please. Where the fun in staying within the script? That's like saying you did exactly as you were told, and it came out just the same as the image. It's even more fun when you break or tweak the rules and it comes out even better. I would do anything to be able to draw anything I desired realistically from my mind, and although I'm far from being there, it's still more satisfying when you achieve gradual improvements as you go. I'm not hating, but I'm just sharing something that opened up a new door in the world of illustration, and seeing how you're really good at drawing what you see, I know you would enjoy challenging yourself to render complex surfaces from your mind, and the time will come when you will get bored of copying, but I guarantee you will never get bored of the constant quest to draw realism from the mind. Look at bob ross. Amazing. His work is even better than real, because he controls his own lighting, textures and shading.
