It is great to understand it this way to know that one doesn’t need to have a ton of colored pencils. Having said that I sure do enjoy the more desaturated colors of the Polychromos, Luminance and especially the Lightfast pencils. When I started in art I painted with a lot of saturation. Sometimes nature is saturated but I also learned to love those subtleties that I loved in other media too such as oil painting. Both oil painting and colored pencils have a lot in common since the pencils are basically oil paint in a pencil and learning those blending methods and natural looking colors has improved my art.

I always bump up the saturation on my reference photos because I like to add color, but I can see how this would be helpful when doing human portraits :)

When I’m drawing portraits, I typically change the photo to black and white to get better values as you stated. I’ve recently started using colored pencils ✏️ and sometimes I switch back and forth from the subject photo.
