Good info for any aspiring pencil Artist. My personal preference for pencil work with a full range of values is to use a 4H for the lightest tones (other than the white of the paper), then a 2H, F, HB, B, 2B, and then 4B, 5 or 6B; or darker depending on your subject matter. In my observation people starting out in pencil work often tend towards being tentative--with mostly light tones--or towards being heavy handed, with darker tones throughout. Of course using or thinking of a value scale going from light to dark and looking for those tones within your reference, is a good way to develop well balanced drawings.
