So the comment about trancing vs sketching, I think most artists are half and half. If you're going to sell your artwork, it's typically more accepted to have drawn it, but for studies and practice, a lot of people trace because it saves a huge amount of time and helps you recognise proportions and shapes. Personally I don't see any issue with tracing as long as credit to the original picture is given and the art isn't being sold for commercial use. That being said, if you took you're own reference photo, then even that isn't really an issue.

I agree. If you want to develop sketching skills, then don't trace. If you want to dedicate ten or fifteen hours to the coloured medium, then go ahead and take the shortcut. Further, if you've done everything, including taking the photo, then do whatever you want, however you want.

Say, I trace the general picture(given an anime character) and instead of tracing its clothes from the film, I give them some clothes I think suites them(let's say instead of naruto having his normal anime clothes I gave him sweatpants and a sweater and I change his hair color and style too) is it considered art theft? Or stealing? Or tracing? Is it cheating in art? Is it all that I've mention? I dont know why but I feel guilty if I do it, and it's getting on my nerves latelt

Since you’re more into shading and coloring why not trace? Especially your own photography, it’s all art and technique! I just got done watching a lot of spray painting videos and penalty of people use stencils for one thing or another, they do it because it’s easy and they are so talented they want to work on their favorite area of work not all that other stuff. I personally think you should trace if you’re having a bad time, wether it’s in the quality of work or quality of fun you’re having just keep it fun!!!

That's the great thing about every medium in art, there are NO rules. Unfortunately, like everything else in life its up for debate in the infamous court of public opinion. I find ways of accepting constructive criticism & suggestions and do my best to tune out the noise that's left. The latter is a lot easier said than done some days!!😆We have enough rules, laws, guidelines & standards to conform to daily. IMO art & the mediums used to express ourselves are the rarebexception to all those. Take care.🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

@@lilydoherty5050 really depends on what you have, I didn’t enjoy tracing off an iPad because I think it’s easy to tape some pictures to a window and trace but I understand that’s kind of hard. DIY light boxes aren’t too hard. Find what feels right for you, also if you have a big computer screen/laptop screen you could totally tape it on those and turn the brightness up like an iPad!! Good luck in what finding what works for you.

Personally I think there's so much skill involved in rendering that I don't see much of an issue with little bits of tracing, especially when it's hyperrealism! You can't trace your way to a perfect picture without a lot of technical skill as it is. I know I've seen incredible artists who use lightboxes to stylise from real life too! I do think the line blurs when you get into commissions and such - if it's your own photo though I think you'd pretty much fine to trace since you're the original artist of the photo, but if it was someone else's it gets a bit scummy unless it's very basic guidelines or you're stringing references together. Since I work more cartoony, I either go for eyeballing references or using a digital programme to trace some framework if the picture is too complex (and then eyeball that) but that's because I work rather simplistically.

exactly, no one can draw perfectly, but a correct baseline is crucial for realism. if the underlying drawing has issues you can't always cover it up by adding color. and even if you do freehand a masterpiece, you didn't do it without a ton of erasing, which will also show up in your final piece. Tracing even if it's just to have a clean sketch to start with can make a massive difference in your end results.

Important (but sad) update: It's been 4 months since I drew this, and I've just looked at the artwork again for the first time in a little while since putting it away. The blending solution has turned yellow over all the artwork, and left a yellow stain all over the back of the page as well - only in the areas that the solution was used. I'm surprised - I watched the video again, wondering if I'd used olive oil or baby oil, and was surprised when it was the zest pencil blend. I'm unsure if the solution I purchased was legit (because it wasn't in the "Zest-It" packaging I expected) but this is something to keep in mind when using any kind of solution. I'll be posting some pictures over on Facebook!

About tracing, I learnt to outline through sketching and using grid methods so I can and understand how to draw an image properly, however, because it takes so long I often quickly trace an outline so I get the right sizes and proportions and then sketch in details after. I think it’s important to know but I don’t think tracing matters too much when it’s the final result that matters and how you use the colour etc after you’ve done the outline 🤷‍♀️

It depends on the Artist, the Skill sets, and the understanding of the medium for Tracing. In both an Artist and Art Historian perspective: Animation? They trace all the time. It's faster, quicker, and it saves time to get proportions right and goes to the next part of movement. Realism NORMALLY is actually using a grid, but sometimes tracing just makes it easier to get to the main point of the medium (ie: oil painting.) and was done even by famous artists in the far past. (Through the reflecting the glass method actually, as Viemire is a good example of doing this because he wanted to take away less time with sketching out the the landscape and backgrounds for his works as it's the person that was the focus of the paintings). There's also the transfer method which is kinda a half and half method for some cases. Tracing is also good to learn how to draw something. You follow the lines of the thing you are trying to learn to draw and do it a few times as you see the differences of each attempt and then try drawing. The biggest no in my own personally opinion when Tracing is *not* okay is you trace someone else's artwork, with no changes to the piece whatsoever, and then call it your art and that you drew it from start to finish. That is stealing. There's no reference to the other person you took it from in this case and you're taking *all* the credit. You would have been okay in tracing your reference piece through the transfer method because your focus was the coloring, not the drawing.

I definitely agree on the tracing, people never need my permission to trace my work (I think it's stupid that artists expect others to ask them for permission), but I expect them to be honest to give credit for the work.

Most of it is to make sure i get specific parts correct so it doesnt throw off the entire image lol

When I was taking commissions and each picture time is money I used every tool available to me. From projectors to tracing papers even graphite papers I used them ALL! If I am creating original art work, I like to sketch and move into painting from there. I recently started working with soft pastels and I created multiple versions of a portrait of my wife. They are all from a photograph I took at my brothers wedding. I made a graph and transferred the image once, then moving to velour paper I used a projector enlarging the image more than the graph. I even used the graphite rub technique on the back of a laser print to create several versions of one size on different papers. Creating Art is a personal journey and developing your skills is necessary and only you can determine how good each skill you need to master to create each individual art piece. I have worked as a photographer and have taken hundred of thousands of photos. I still go out an snap a new reference just to avoid going through books of old photos! Congratulations on your 50K and I hope your not long in reaching your next goal! The End segment was quite cute and very fun! Good Luck!

Or when I'm commissioned to draw/ paint a pet and I don't have the time to draw something over and over again. There's also the risk of rendering a drawing that isn't 100% right and having to start over, so I check my drawing digitally and adjust if needed on important work - this takes a lot of time. Long story short, people don't pay me enough to freehand every drawing lmao

I don't think tracing is inherently bad or wrong. I think it's good if you're trying to get muscle memory down to become a better artist. I'm an artist but I also enjoy coloring so I will trace coloring pages on to better paper so I can use my supplies and get some muscle memory down as well. I never take credit for drawing the image, and credit whatever artist actually designed the piece. I think it's good that you actually drew it, even if you used some guides from the image because there's a lot of detail in those balloons. It's also good to show the process and to discuss this because I'm sure many people will say it's "cheating". Anyhow, Congrats on 50k!

There is nothing to be ashamed of by tracing, especially for those first starting out. I do realism (drawing and painting) and rarely trace, but for some of my pieces, I’ve drawn the subject myself either on my iPad or on paper, then traced it onto the substrate using carbon paper. I think that’s the same as what you suggested here; it’s your photo, if you had wanted to trace it, it’s no big deal, especially to get through the process quicker and with the correct proportions. Like you said, as long as artist doesn’t relay solely on tracing and continues to practice skill, I see no problem with it. Especially since the main focus is the coloring in realism. It’s lovely and congrats (to your past self…I’m a little late to the game 😂).

3:31 i use grid methods for my own drawing but if it was a school project or something i don't have enough time to draw so i use tracing method sometimes but even with tracing you can tell if someone can draw or not from the way they trace

Wow Sarah I didn't realise it's only been a year! Congratulations on 50K subscribers; you deserve so many more. I really love your channel, your videos are informative, entertaining and you help so many people by sharing your skills. Thank you 😊 Regarding tracing, I totally agree with you. I can draw, I enjoy drawing but I much prefer colouring and shading so depending on the type of work I am doing I use outline tracing. I especially use it when doing commissions such as pet portraits. Partly because it saves many hours and partly because accuracy is extremely important for realism and likeness. Many artists, including some of the masters, throughout history have used tracing techniques such camera obscura.

For a budget pencil, crayola looks quite good. From what I've seen in my collection, they are almost identical to faber-castell red edition, the one for kids. So I think that they really are more suitable for children than for artists. I did the cheap challenge too, on a portrait, using pencils I bought from a local shop, for 5$. It was ok, but I guess you really do need at least medium quality supplies to get it looking hyper-realistic :D

As far as tracing vs not tracing... use whatever you want. There are no rules. Just enjoy it! The only time I do trace, is when I am using a post mortem photo of a skull, in my drawings of unidentified people for Medical Examiners offices and Law Enforcement agencies. That is when it is necessary for me to have exact precision in the dimensions. In all my other artwork, I just use my eyes. But, it's a skill that I have built over the decades of drawing and painting. It all boils down to personal choice.

Howdy and happy day!!! & Many CONGRATULATIONS!!! Thanks for all the videos and all the hard work!! (Thanks for the great editing to Shane too) I think that if tracing is “cheating” then so is using a reference. So what I mean to say is, I heard this cool KZbinr once insist that there are no rules in art. ;) Do what you can, & have fun! :)

I like to trace small points and then “fill in the lines.” I did a family portrait for friends of ours that was 19”x 24”. They gave me pics that were all different sizes and none of the kids were together! I blew up the images, traced most of the shape, and then filled in all the details as I placed them all together. It was difficult, but came out pretty amazing! I never batted an eyelash at how I got the proportions correct as I see tattoo artists using photos and a light box to draw up the stencil. I think it’s totally ok. ❤️❤️❤️

I’d be anxious getting a tattoo if they DIDN’T trace! Unless they were amazing. It’s very permanent to not be perfect!

I subscribe to a few channels, and I'm planning on starting my own to connect to my blog (because nobody reads anymore - ask Harry from The Art Gear Guide lol), but yours is by far one of my favorites. You're never overly opinionated, you're upbeat, you don't promote opinions as facts, and you stay completely out of the coloring community drama (who knew there even was such a thing?). I find that I can trust your content. You know your products and you don't try to push one over the other. It's clear that you don't have any hidden agenda to get people to buy certain brands. I have enormous respect for you. There are only 3 other KZbinrs in this community that I can say that about. You absolutely deserve all the success you get, and more. Congratulations on 50K!

Congratulations! I hope you get more and more along the way! 💞💞 In terms of realism, I never traced and learned how to do the proportions by observation of real people and photos! My art teachers' criticism was also very helpful! So I learned how to do excellent graded works of realism cuz of that! I advice you to not trace at all and instead reference only and learn things in by observation! Believe me! It's kinda of a slow process but it really pays off! 😊💞
