It’s so refreshing to hear this. I’m tired of seeing perfectly edited and scripted stuff here on KZbin. I think many of us are craving down to earth expression. I’m also looking forward to scholarly content for the witchcraft community that is useful.

@@drawingKenaz we know we can't go back and even stand in the same place in the same stream...because the water itself changes. I absolutely think we can build a different framework with a healthier set of expectations that is so much more inclusive, validating, and **just healthier** than the current model, it will (eventually) make the current model obsolete. We too, are resurrecting YT, to provide the support that people tell us they are needing **right now** Would love the opportunity to meet you in person, if you ever decide to visit Beltane Southwest. Yes! I’m loving this. We are surprised when people are multi dimensional because everybody and his dog seems to have niched their souls away for monetisation and followers. I threw books and a diy literature degree onto a tarot channel this year and ghost hunting onto it last year and gardening from the start and although everybody else is confused I am very happy. and I too am playing the piano again after many years away. As an ex teacher I hear you about not wanting to be here to teach. In fact I hear that in my bones! As you said about putting enough make-up on to talk your way to success my daughter yelled from the bathroom “mum I’ve just dropped your makeup bag in the toilet” lol the synchronicities ❤

I wanted to take a moment to share how much I absolutely love your book, The Witch’s Path. I first discovered it as an audiobook, and it resonated with me so deeply that I couldn’t resist ordering a hard copy, which I’m now eagerly waiting for! Imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon your KZbin channel-I subscribed right away. It’s such a wonderful way to connect further with your teachings and insights. I know you must hear this often, but your book truly stands out among the many I’ve read on the subject. The Witch’s Path hit me in a way that others haven’t, and it’s already become a cherished part of my spiritual journey. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and guidance with the world. Your work means so much to me, and I look forward to learning more from you. Hugs from Melbourne Australia

Although i giggled at the " I'm not an educator " as i reflected on all the times you said something that had me disappearing off into a research worm hole due to a thought or a ramble. And i dispute the "not providing a metaphysical package to be the best you" when you constantly encourage open mindedness, curiosity and explorativeness. Which seems to be the ultimatel metaphysical pathway - find a thought or an idea to follow and go explore. Looking forwards to seeing what adventures you take this year.

You're hilarious. Congratulations on nailing down your dissertation topic and good luck with the comps! (Or whatever they're called in your field). If I may offer some unsolicited advice from one doctoral person to another: the best bit of wisdowm I ever got from a supervisor was to set aside an hour *of your workday* to stare out the window and let your brain percolate. I would like to add to the "writing a book is not the sign you think it is": That depends on how an author structures and writes a nonfiction book. ;-) As a book editor, I see a lot of books (especially from the US, sorry) that are fluff blown up to book size. Lots of (similar) anecdotes and examples, not a lot of actual book. And often it's because the author doesn't have the know-how (or not the patience to distill their know-how) to pull off a longer book. A book is not a series of blogposts or video scripts. When I work with authors, we go over the first draft and we look for example at connective tissue in their topics (taking chapters out of isolation) and we look at the learning path of the reader and wether it was met in the book. I ask them to go beyond giving 10 similar examples and then 10 more - which is so typical of US nonfiction books. When an author gives examples (which is great): Take the time to destill patterns or meaning from them. "Unmasked" by Ellie Middleton is a great example of a well-written non-fiction book. She gives a lot more insight into the topic than many books that are much longer than hers.

Good to see you, Thorn. I look forward to having another "one of our own" doing scholarly stuff, even if you're not going to be on tenure track. I hope you can make some progress on reducing the cult of the author in Paganism. The amount of both attention and credibility I gained when I published my first book was scary. I mean, I didn't just appear on the scene and I didn't suddenly attain some sort of Pagan enlightenment. But I had a book published through a major publisher and that made all the difference for some people.

This was great to hear. I am mulling around with starting a PhD after working for a while in my field (engineering). And the PhDs im most interested in are theoretical in nature (physics and chemistry and planetary science) and a big part of it is having that academic community back. Its always a back and forth in my brain with is this the right thing to do in my 30s, I am willing to take the salary hit to do it (no dependents or partner relying on me) but people around me are so STRESSED about it because I guess they are afraid of someone who made money suddenly not? I don't know something I am not worried about myself. Anyway all that is to say I have always wanted to do it and it is really refreshing to hear someone do this in their "mid life" and really love it. I have always loved your vibe for the academic energy you bring to these things. Really inspiring to hear someone else "go off the rails" academic style. Also...when you said "people ask me 'are you doing a PhD in ghost hunting?'" I screamed SAY YES QUEEN! So Honestly I think you need a shirt that says that. Full support.

And I graduated into the Great Recession...I already know jobs aren't real and retirement isn't a thing. So I can go and let a university pay for it and just learn! DO IT.

I would like social media like Bluesky but less frequent updates from people and bigger pictures, but not Insta. Main thing for me would be that I can see posts from people I follow and that readers that follow my author accounts actually see my posts without me having to pay for each post to be visible. (Sort of like Reddit). And that I can post links to outside stuff without the posts losing visibility. And I want less algorithms, less "let me push you toward videos, let me push you toward content that makes your blood boil". I'd pay up to 15 euros (or such) per month for such a social media service to give the service income without selling out user data or pushing ads down our throats. But it would only be worth the money if there are enough potential readers and most of my current social media connections on that service.

I wish I had been around for Witchcraft KZbin in 2010! Alas -- I really explored solitary Wicca back in the early 2000's for a couple of years, but stopped because Wicca really wasn't for me and it felt like that's all there really was (and I was a teenager and life is just chaotic as a teen in a different way from when you're an adult). I didn't "come back" until October 2019, and good golly were there some changes between like, 2002 and 2020! Honestly, I'm bananas grateful for a lot of those differences, but it does sound like I missed a really special period in between.

There's lot more variety and diversity now, in terms of practice and voices! It's a great thing! I miss the intimacy of the way the community here was structured, but overall it's better to have more voices.
@brigittaalbares34176 күн бұрын
@@drawingKenaz yeah, I definitely missed that. I feel like I went from having no community really outside of books as a young teen to having this huge online community that lacks much intimacy. I just missed it coming and going lol Hopefully some of that 2010 intimacy can be recreated, keeping the huge variety of voices. I see so many new witches online looking for real life community, but no one seems to know how to find it, much less create it, so the broad, often shallow community ends up being it. One of my goals this year is to actually attend some local events and rituals, beyond just Paganicon in March, but having better online community sure would be welcome!

Hail the witches who don't brush their hair before filming! Hell, I posted a video where I had sticks in my hair! You do just want to turn on the camera and speak to the witches on the other side. I always kind of think of one or several of those I know would be watching. Let's let it feel like a conversation! 🫂 Much love, Thorn. ❤

I think so many of us are just saturated by the “content creator” culture. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of hard working folks out there doing lots of lovely educational work - but I want to meet real people and know how witchcraft is part of their broader personhood. I really look forward to hearing about your paranormal adventures. Sounds like a blast!

Thank you! Yeah, I feel the same way. There are some lovely folks out there doing good work, especially for beginners, but that's just not *for* me and doesn't serve the needs I have as a practitioner. "Content creation" is for a general public, I think. Beyond that, we need more intimate conversations and spaces where the goal isn't necessarily reach or sales.

I also want to come back to KZbin, but I'm so hesitant.

My biggest problem with ghost hunters is that they pretend they have a scientific basis for stuff that some guy made up one time. Like don't get me started on the nonsense that is the spirit box or the rem pod.

Oh please PLEASE if you write a book that touches on academic and witchcraft or beyond, I want to read it. I can't even bother with the more popular aspects of internet witchcraft as its too much about aesthetics than the spiritual, crafting, WORK beyond the visual of witchcraft over all. I guess this is why I find myself more heading back into hoodoo/spiritual/animism as it is way more hands on get dirty than pretty colors. Not knocking those things that make people happy/witchy but it does not work for me. Eh, or I'm too old to just be in the.......shiny 24/7. Hm, I guess that is how I am feeling at this time. Also, learning Japanese, reading up for the N5 and learning Herbalism AND getting back on motorcycles AND everything else. I am also hoping this leads to making friends beyond my current job (which pays the bills but no way I would spend time with a bunch of leos)

I'm glad you're here. I'm grateful for this space where we can be real people together. I don't know if KZbin can work as a community builder in the comment section alone. If you build it, they will come. I KNOW there are others who are tired of the social media witchcraft that is pushed on us. I KNOW there are inquisitive and critical thinkers who may not be scholars but who care about why we do what we do. The non-creators/influencers who want to have fun and try new things without worrying it will hurt their brand. Either way, I'm following along to see what shenanigans you'll get up to. We need the inspiration.

Totally in the same lane you're describing. I'm working on a book on Crone hood, but more from a historical/ cultural aspect. Deep research is my jam. I respect your work so much!
