Oh yeah, I also didn't know the difference between Plaid and Gingham so I looked it up: Plaid use different colors and usually use light to dark (like the green and orange pattern you used) Gingham is plaid but always uses white. So.... Plaid is a flannel shirt and Gingham is a red and white picnic table lol Hope that helped someone owo

Plaid is also like every Kilt ever. A mixture of thick and thin lines, depending on your clan or tribe. They call them Tartan though. I know what my Tartan color is, and Yay it's mostly my favorite color!! Ancestral memory?

@@joybrockway5688 my favorite color? Green. I practically squealed with delight when the lady at the Scottish festival looked it up and showed me. But it also has black and I think some red, a thin stripe of yellow. First I got one of those printouts of my maiden name, and from reading that she was able to tell which tribe I was. (one of my ancestors may have signed the Magna Carta) The following year I did my mom's last name, also Scottish as it turned out. The woman said it was an ancient pattern, pre-dating Christianity and even Rome. Back to either the Picts or Druids, I forget which. I wish I could explore it more but my folks are gone now, siblings not really talking to me and I have other stuff to deal with. I do wonder if my real family is out there somewhere or if I'm the last one left, if that makes sense. folks relocated when I was a toddler so I didn't really grow up knowing any cousins or stuff like that. My dad when he was alive found some document written in 1940, from someone with this name. He wrote about stuff involving William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Something about how in spite of being outnumbered and facing certain death, my ancestors refused to lay down arms, so the king of England had put a price on the head of everyone with my name, so the head of the clan gathered up as many as he could and sent them to America from the highlands of Scotland, where my Norse ancestors had landed and interbred. There is still a place in New Jersey with my maiden name. my dad later said he found out that wasn't true, so I'm not sure. I wish I could access my old emails from him there is a wealth of info. The weird thing was, when looking online for my name and images, I kept seeing tombstones with my father's name AND my name together. Sometimes as husband and wife, sometimes father and daughter, sometimes siblings, and so on. Soooo very weird to see my dad's name on a headstone while he was still alive. But the way our names kept popping up together...like it was meant to be. Have you heard the theory of "soul families"? I think that's what it is called. That people keep reincarnating in the same grouping but different relationships between them? That people somehow find each other in the next life? Of my immediate family of origin, he is the one I am the most like and who I miss the most. Anyway, didn't mean to ramble. So my name is actually of Norse descent but I don't know if there are records going back that far. And my high school mascot was Vikings. haha. It's fun stuff. I had a friend who was into researching ancestry. She helped my son go back 5 generations for a project. Apparently before people were literate, it was not uncommon for a name to be spelled one way at birth, another way at marriage, another way if joining the military and another way at death. You just verbally tell the person who can read and write your name, and they spell it however they want. So the vowels can move around or be lost or changed, the consonants usually are the same but can shift all over the place. So the oldest name I could find, the first letter is now the last letter. I tried to look up THAT spelling with the people who print out the chart with your name history and family crest, but they didn't have it so I used the current spelling. But in the written text, the older spelling WAS mentioned. If you can find a scottish or celtic festival they usually have several booths that do the name thing. Plus I realized I LOVE bagpipe music. I'd love someday to go to NJ and visit every cemetery and every grave and look for possible relatives. Too many projects and not enough time or money.

What you said about sketching a lot to keep the process fun is really what I didn't know I needed to hear. I keep looking ahead to some of the artists I admire with their finished illustrations and going "if i just practice and practice and practice I can get as good as them" and that isn't a bad attitude to have, but when it comes to the point that it's draining, and you end up more frustrated than you do satisfied, then it's a good idea to just go back to the basics and remember why you fell in love with it in the first place. And I really do love sketching

@@drawingwiffwaffles The first time I tried to swatch watercolors, I put too much pigment on the brush, kept trying to thin it out, dragging across the page, then mixing colors, and testing what the brush could do, what kind of shapes. Then all these "things" happened and it looked like other things that I drew in when it dried, like an eyeball, and drew fish "swimming" in the blue part, and little boulders in the brown and grey bit, lot of plants. I still haven't done a proper neat swatch

Next time you try to get that plaid pattern, try using your colourless blender. I haven't tried it for this yet (and now I really want to) but I think it would be much easier than colouring in a bunch if squares, and it will look more streamline too. Oh that's a fun video idea. Make a skethbook page dedicated to patterns to put on clothing! I'd definitely watch that!
