My watercolor game isn't very strong, but HOLY MOLY I never realized what a difference the quality of pigment could make on my paintings. I've finally made a watercolor painting that doesn't look like a muddy mess. W00T!
Of all the paletteful packs I've unboxed thus far, this one felt the least full...? if that makes any sense. Usually they provide a pad of paper, this time they only provided the one board. And the weird cardboard piece with the watercolor ground painted on it. I would have liked to see either another couple sheets of paper or the actual container of Watercolor Ground for me to call this one 100% worth it. I still had a lot of fun, and I am so excited to be introduced to Qor watercolors!
► Inside the August Box:
QOR Watercolors: amzn.to/2MI0l7F
ProArt Small Folding Palette: amzn.to/2OyrASy
Board with QOR Watercolor Ground Painted on it: amzn.to/2P2dtpE
1 sheet of 500 Series Strathmore Mixed Media Board: amzn.to/2BecbF8
Winsor and Newton Kolinsky Red Sable Brush 00: amzn.to/2vH1LJg
Princeton Snap Golden Taklon Round Brush 4: amzn.to/2OsbPwo
I also used Water, some generic Paper Towel, and the Paint Puck: amzn.to/2KPGaCU

Quality over quantity! :) QoRs are known for their vibrancy and transparency, which helps keep them from getting too muddy, and those little tubes will last you a very long time. They use a different binder than other watercolors as well, which doesn't make a huge difference, but they do tend to flow more than other brands. Have fun painting with your new toys!

Ahh!! As a watercolor artist, I was actually pretty amazed at the selection they gave you. These colors are literally my FAVORITE limited color palette, just exchanging the green for a Payne's gray. That's really, really good!! I agree they could've given you a larger brush instead of the detail one, but you know, just nitpicking at this point. And yeah, a pad of paper would've been nicer than two pieces of paper, but to be fair, the Strathmore is 100% cotton -- no idea what the QoR watercolor ground is made of. So still, a pretty nice place to start trying out really high-quality paper!! I think if I were a beginner with the knowledge I have now, I'd be absolutely ecstatic. That's a really nice set to start with!! I really love the illustration you did as well. Her hair was L Y F E. I loved it so much I immediately became inspired ~~and absolutely didn't plagiarize it for a drawing of my own~~.

Is it ridiculous to say that I could tell from the thumbnail alone that these were Qor paints? I haven’t reviewed Qor on my channel but I’ve been a long fan of theres.....ever since I bought a whole bunch of them and then spilled every single one of my freshly poured half-pans onto my carpet. 😭 I had the exact same revelations back when I stopped using “okay” paints and went to actually good paints. MAN. Good quality materials in watercolor REALLY make all the difference. Paper especially has rocked my world. Hope you do more paint stuff in the future if you’re so inclined! I actually found your channel years ago when you were doing watercolor experiments because I was ALSO doing whatercolor experiments at the time.

By the way, the “specklies” are called granulation, and they happen when as a result of a combination of a paint whose pigment naturally has a granular texture, and that pigment separates and settles into the intentionally uneven texture of watercolor paper. When I first started using watercolors, I didn’t think I liked granulation but now I’ve grown to love it as it gives my pieces more textural variety and charm! I even now try to add texture with my gouache, which is an intentionally smooth and flat paint because I miss that extra element that’s available in watercolors.

Oooh this box is interesting! Also, I got some watercolor tips (mind you I'm not a professional painter so everything I'm gonna say is based on my personal experience ehehe, but I thought, why not sharing it? Someone might find it useful, right?) : Play with water, not only the paints! This is a good method when you have a small brush. Try the wet on wet techniques, and then start building up the colors by layering it, instead of putting the paints directly, because you're not gonna like it when the brush starts to dry midway 😂 as for the shading, you can try to put the paint directly, but then dilute the paint with water immediately, that should do it fine! Hehehe. If anyone has other great watercolor tips, comment below! Also, I'm looking forward for you to paint with watercolors again, because this piece turned out pretty 😍

It's so sad that they gave you a little tiny sable brush! From my understanding and the way I use natural hair brushes, they're best when they're larger rounds because they hold a crap ton of water! It's really unfortunate they gave you a tiny one so it's hard to see the difference :( I'm really happy you went for the galaxy pants though! That was my favorite part of the thumbnail sketch. Love u.. blue may not seem to fit in with the colors but they gave u the basics to create every color imaginable. Blue/cyan, red/magenta and yellow. In my painting class, all we bought for colors were magenta, cyan, yellow, black and white.. it forced creativity. The worst project we had was creating a color wheel. No one sees color the same.. so YOUR red is different than MY red and how do u grade that? Lol. Btw.. great flamingo btw😍

just my 2 cents! for the link to the paints, it would also be great to have a link to the 6-color palette. spending $70 on a brand a bunch of us have never heard before can be a bit daunting, and i'd love to support you by using your links! im a pure-digital artist trying to get into traditionals and your videos have been extremely helpful and super cute. ty for reading~

Just so you know the “weird” dots in the pink is known as granulation which can give watercolor paintings texture. Some people love it others hate it. Also a really cool thing about the watercolor brand you’re using is that when you paint it on the paper and add water to the rest of the paper it makes an amazing spread effect. It’s quite beautiful.
@kimberlylam5408
@kimberlylam5408 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't watched the whole video so I don't know if you covered this but the speckle magenta is called a granulating color. The dotted effect is used for special types of painting or for cool effects.
@godzandheros
@godzandheros 6 жыл бұрын
It's not though, quinacridones are non granulating so idk what's going on with the magenta. plus granulation DOES NOT look like that.

@kimberlylam5408 6 жыл бұрын
@@godzandheros Oh, I didn't know it was quinacridone. Thanks for correcting me although that's the only explanation I can think of since the purple was like that too. Maybe it's some kind of hybrid or mild granulation? Although I think it would say on the bottle if it was. What do you think it is?

green gold is one of my favourite paint colours. I always get it in whatever medium i'm buying. I even use its as the 'yellow' primary in my brights primary set up (which uses green gold, quinacridone magenta, and phthalo turquoise). it makes for really vibrant greens and very earthy but luminous oranges

The watercolor ground is a paste that can be painted onto other surfaces. I have a couple jars of cold press ground which is a more textured version to simulate the texture of cold press watercolor paper. I played around with it a little and although I like the txture, it takes forever for watercolor washes to dry on it, so I would avoind painting on something vertical or that needs a lot of additional layers. I think it would be most useful for use with acrylic paints (it's actually an acrylic medium) to give them a texture like watercolor when applied thinly so it looks like watercolor but has the durability and water resistance of acrylic. QoR makes really good, vibrant watercolors. But the difference you're seeing from the cheap stuff is an expensive artist grade vs a student grade. They're made by Golden. If you're ever in upstate NY, they give tours of the factory during the week. It's a small family owned company.

Waffles, you've really improved. Like a lot. But I do believe you still have the same deficiencies in your artwork--color theory. This piece is awesome and great, but because of having a mainly purple-pink character made the piece lost its interest. That yellow in the background really saved it, but you could have used a color pallet with better values, like purple-yellow-blue, greenish-blue-pink (character). Overall this piece is still really pretty, but I hope you could work with color theory for more interest in watercolor. If you need help, Danica Sills is an amazing watercolorist.

I would argue that this was a really good use of a monochromatic pallete tbh, i especially agree with your point on yellow though, cant go wrong with yellow and purple and it really brought out the foreground. I think any more colours on the foreground would have cluttered it up, but id add a disclaimer that im colourblind so what do i know 😂
@farzataz9911
@farzataz9911 6 жыл бұрын
@@Mabufu381 yep, you can't go wrong with yellow and purple. Though I would argue this wasn't monochromatic as there were four colors and she only chose to use two with a value that was far too close. She may have been able to fix it by using pure parts of the pigment (i.e. pure ultramarine blue for shadows, yellow for accessories, etc.).
