A few words about materials for the newbies: "Run what you brung." Its more important to be making marks rather than what materials you are using. Any tool, any paper and just do it. They'll all work. When the time comes that you notice something isn't working the way you want use the following information: Pencils: (H)ard and (B)lack. Higher the number, the more hard or more black. Graphite pencils have graphite which is what gives them color, and a binder which gives them durability. Hard pencils have harder binder, Black pencils more graphite. HB is sort of a compromise. The so-called #2 pencil used for taking tests uses a different grading system, but is similar to an HB. Most mechanical pencils come with #2/HB leads, sometimes you can find them in other grades. Harder pencils, combined with a light touch, are often used for putting in guidelines; press too hard and you dent the paper making later erasure challenging. In the beginning it only matters if you are using a sketchbook as the harder pencils will dent the paper. If you put a sheet of thin plastic or cardstock under the page you're working on, this becomes a non-issue. Colored pencils are not graded this way. Paper: When graphite sketching, notice how smooth the paper is. Cheap printer/copier paper is pretty smooth. If you use a 2H pencil on it your marks may look silvery instead of black. If this is the only paper you have, try a Black graded pencil. If you can't get one, make a pad of the copier paper by putting extra sheets under the one you're working, 3-5 should help. Yes, the paper will dent, but you're going to use this to your advantage. The paper will wrap around the tip of the pencil as you apply pressure which increases the surface area of the contact which results in more graphite on the paper. Most sketch paper is not so smooth. This is called "tooth" with papers for pastels being almost rough. It is this texture that grabs your medium from your tool and holds onto it. If the paper is too smooth for the medium, you may be tempted to apply too much pressure. Pen and marker paper don't need as much and are smooth, paper for pencil needs a little more, charcoal needs even more, etc. If you see Bristol paper, know that it comes in two surfaces, smooth and vellum; remember the smooth is better for marker, so the vellum will be better for graphite. Some papers are two-sided, one side may have more tooth than the other. Paper comes in different thicknesses and weights. Stay with cheaper, thin paper for practice. When the time comes look into thick papers for your project, they'll hold up to aggressive erasing, inking and color washes. Erasers: Pink erasers used to have pumice added to them and have a tendency to damage paper and leave a tint behind. White plastic or vinyl erasers are the standard used by artists. Gum erasers have some unique properties that make them very messy, but very good at lifting marks off the paper. Kneaded erasers are soft, putty-like and tacky. They can be shaped to a point to erase with pin precision, or dabbed on an area to lighten the marks. You probably won't need any of these other than the white one while learning to sketch.

I have seen dozens of drawing/sketching tutorials, but not one has shown how a sketch, starting with faint outline, turns into the finished product, ready to be used as a final presentation or the stuff that's used for publishing and other such high category stuff. Can you please make a video on this? i.e. A sketch, starting as a pencil drawing, all through the various stages of inking, scanning, coloring etc? I like your videos, and this would help many beginners like me.

i have HB pencils but for ppl who like adding lots of detail in their characters then i recommend to use HB pencils that are a bit dull so that the lines will be more soft while erasing and also it will help for shading!... I'm semi good on traditional art soo if u don't think this is good recommendation then i understand, we all still have stuff to learn in the world of art soo..
@jbkhan1135 Жыл бұрын
Regarding the colored pencils when sketching, I remember in one of Naoki Urasawa's Manben series episodes, the Manga artist being interviewed said he uses colored pencils for sketching because when they are scanned for publication, the sketch lines don't show up or are a lot easier to remove in post-production edits. I also find that sketching with a colored pencil helps me switch easier from sketch mode to "final version" mode when actually finishing the drawing, as the lines I'm drawing at that point seem more final, where the colored lines seem more tentative/initial.

As a beginner at drawing, I find it funny hearing about the challenge of not using an eraser or simply just using a pen. When I started actively trying to learn early this year, I had started with office pens and yellow notepads at my job, (because that's all we really had) and stayed with it for a long time. My thoughts always returned to the idea that it was probably more punishing as I negated so much room for any mistakes, which after watching this, I'm glad it isnt just me thinking this. I feel like it paid off to a fair degree once I transferred to a more professional grade mechanical pencil. I feel I've made a lot of improvement from switching to one as well. I especially want to keep in mind that no sketch needs to be perfect, and that not every line needs to be a mirror image when using a reference!! Really appreciate your insight!! I'm definitely binging more of your videos. ✏️✒️🤍🖤

H is from HAUT. It means HIGH. French somehow dominates pencil labels haha. i dont know why. The larger the H number, the lighter the stroke. So, if you need the lightest of touch, use the H pencils. They also stay sharper longer. B comes from the French word BAS. It means LOW. The letter ‘B’ signifies a LOW quantity of binder creating a higher pigment/graphite deposit and darker stroke. thus softer .

I really do think drawing on cheap paper is one of the best tips. I take it a step forward and draw on whatever I can find. Scrap paper, paper towels. Whatever can make a mark and can be drawn on. It's great to practice on. Especially that you don't care how it would turn out. Plus you can clean it up later on something nicer. Like better paper or digital.

Trying to sketch without erasing's easier said than done. What if you wanted to colorize a sketch you've made after cleaning it up with either ink or a darker pencil? You'll still need to erase the underline guides.
