Thanks for this walkthrough. As a Brit I've long wanted to buy a piece of Drawmer hardware, and their aftercare is apparently legendary.

I completely forgot about this sweet preamp, now it’s in my must have list. I could use that -10 dB boost on mics such as an MD421 or an SM57. Thanks for this video!

Nice video, thanks! How does the 1972 compare to the 1970? It looks like the 1972 is 'only' about €200 less than the 1970, but this one includes a compressor....

Thank you! The difference is in what the mic/line/DI is paired with. On the 1970 you have EQ filters directly on the DI, and two channels of FET compression with parallel processing. The 1972 gives you the same mic/line/DI inputs, with low and hi pass filters, independent hi and low tilt/shift EQ, and the dynamic lift function. So you really have the same pre, line in, and DI on both units, just with different tools/features attached to them. Both pres (1970 and 1972) have the same adjustable impedance. So which one to get comes down to which additional features best suits what you need.

@Front End Audio thanks for your answer! Indeed it comes down to the choice between preamp + compressor (1970) or preamp + equalizer (1972)... As I don't have any outboard gear yet, but quite some DAW plugins I'm wondering what's the most important hardware to have before going to my audio interface: EQ or compressor? Maybe the EQ, because this will probably affect the pre amp directly, whereas compression can be done more easily with my DAW plugins I assume, but I might be wrong..?

@@squaremotion1685 That unfortunately becomes a long and subjective conversation. If you are looking for tone shaping, an analog EQ is best. If you are looking for surgical EQing, a plug-in is often best. I personally feel that analog compressors/dynamic processing is better done in the analog world. But this is all subjective. I would say that 100% without a doubt, you should be using hi-pass and low-pass filtering in the analog world before your audio ever hits a converter. Outside of that, it becomes a personal call as to the outboard tools you prefer to use. My home studio has a lot of outboard gear, so I only really use plug-ins for surgical or super crazy creative stuff. But people use all kinds of plug-ins all the time with great results. It really does come down to what you feel is best. If your instinct is that you have plenty of software compressors to use, than an outboard EQ is likely the way to go. Thank you!
