Can't believe I went to art high school for 5 years and they haven't even once mentioned why our paintings looked flat and "plastic". We didn't have any understanding of why our paintings looked too bright and here I can actually see why and what mistakes we were doing. What a collective waste of money, paint and canvas... Thank you so much for this video!

Thanks Mark. I just watched this for the second time and I'm really surprised at how much you taught in this video. I think the voice over explanation is an excellent teaching method. I am always hungry to know what is going on in a painter's mind, or what his rationale is or what principle he has learned from experience. Very valuable to me. Thanks again.

You are an amazing painter and instructor. There are thousands of people out there in the world who could become high quality painters but fail to become so because of shoddy instruction. I have learned so much in the last week thanks to you.

Love this painting. The range of greens, umber. Very calming but eye catching. I like how you can see the softness of the seed heads and see the coolness of the hard glass. Awesome, as always. Nice to hear you critique yourself like I do myself! If I actually created a vase of flowers into reality, I would still find a fault, lol.

Oh boy for me this , its like I could just live here watching your paintings come together . and I can say from experience over many years that your making this look way too easy , sadly it isn't or not in my case anyways. however you have picked me up of the deck and me going to go and find all my paints and brushes , and follow your teaching method cus I feel like I might just be able to improve some with your approach thanks for all your brilliant instruction.

Very beautiful work, Mark. Maybe the reason you were unhappy with the background may be the almost horizontal line in the fabric about half way up the painting, just above the grass on the left hand side. I know my eye goes to it right away.

Thank you for another great, informative lesson! This put words to what I experienced when I took an art course that lasted for a couple of months and just a few weeks before it ended I fell and broke my right arm and I'm right handed. I'm stubborn and decided to use my left hand instead - and the self portrait I draw was the best I've ever drawn.

i love how humble you sound about being not sure of yourself. when i draw and paint, i also feel the same way. then suddenly everything seems to come together and end up beautiful but as you said, as an artist there are times that i am not sure or lost and change it then end up with something else.

Mark, whenever I see an artist painting in a video they always seem to have ten times more paint on their palet than they end up using, are those saved somehow or wasted? I can't even find decent art supplies around here and I want to buy some from you, I am dying to try good materials but when I do get some, unless and until things get easier financialy, I can't imagine me having all that paint on my palet without some way to recover or store it for later use....in the meantime, is it true that you can use housepaint to paint pictures and if so. what type? I don't want to do that but someone told me its possible when I mentioned that some artists paint with house painting brushes and must have five gallon buckets of paint, so even if I can do some magic in half an hour with oils and a four inch brush....I couldn't afford the amount of paint it would take just to load that brush once...again, I have no wish to, I'm dying to try good paint and brushes and a good canvas.....but how do you afford the paint? I looked at your paints and the $180 set is now my hope but it looks like you have about three times that much paint on your palet all at once....what do you do with that after you finish the painting? if you say its excess and goes in the trash, I'll be the old guy with the Scottish accent going through your trash cans, no need to worry or call a cop. :)
@goilo8887 жыл бұрын
Admittedly house paint has changed since Pollack's day, but he used it and I have read many times that paint chips are literally falling off his paintings in galleries. I suppose it depends on the type of painting you wish to do, but for realism style intended for longevity I would stay away from it.
@Kerrsartisticgifts7 жыл бұрын
Third Dimension Jewellery , hi, thanks for the response to my question about house paint, but I'm still wondering about all that paint on the palet. I imagine if you are a professional artist and selling your paintings you can charge for materials and write off on taxes, any waste....or is it not waste?

I think that overpainting is a problem everybody has. (Along with losing focus of the importance of values, which you emphasis effectively.) There has been several occasions when I had wished I had left a part of the painting alone - on my level. I try to remind myself to step back and take some time before changing something. Great lesson. Thanks.

When you were talking about painting transparency, actually, many artists do successfully get accurate colors and values by combining transparent brushstrokes over opaque ones, as many artists use a thinning medium over their blank canvas, creating a lighter color than it would be otherwise. So actually, not everything on an oil painting ends up being completely opaque all the time.

do i have to use medium or it a optional to oil painting. I have gamsol in my house i don't want any more dangerous chemical inside of my house. So is medium a optional choice.
