GAME: Fate/Samurai Remnant
AUTHOR: Omega Force, Koei Tecmo
Fate/Samurai Remnant lets players play as Miyamoto Iori. The combat is hack and slash style with some similarities to musou gameplay, but it falls under the Action RPG genre with dodging and looking for openings as an important element. It features a wide array of stances, which the player character can switch between on the fly. Iori uses dual katanas, a widespread weapon for Samurai during the Edo period. Players can give commands to their servant, launching special attacks and combos. In certain situations, the game allows for full control of Iori's servant, as his weapons can't be used against other servants.

Sure, Rogue Rider might have a giant Fox, but my theory is that her nature as a Rider is far more insideous. Remember her historical myth, she's a temptress, a seducer, a conniving fox! The implication is clear: Tamamo wants a piggy-back ride, and will manipulate Iori into giving her one...

The game really makes the power disparity between Masters and Servants really clear in this game. In most games you pretty much exclusively play as the servants (or rather only have them as the active combatant with Masters acting as support), here with Iori as your main playable character it became real obvious the difference between mortals and Heroic Spirits. Edit: Also Servants started rolling in at a rapid pace here so I’d like to mention how the Fate community at large figured out all the Servants identities except for one (debatably two) before the game even come out through trailers and character designers. Also Gilgamesh is known as basically the first recorded hero/king. The ancient king of Uruk who collected all the treasures in the world, is two-thirds god, have a bromance with a god-made weapon sent to subdue him after becoming an arrogant tyrant, lose him and become fearful of death and tried to find immortality, lose it to a snake, accepts the lost and just went home ruling as a much wiser king. Funnily enough Final Fantasy Gilgamesh despite sharing his name have more in common with Benkei from Japanese history, who is famously known for collecting weapons and losing a duel to Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune on a bridge (Hence Battle on the Big Bridge). Both “Benkei” and Yoshitsune also appeared in Fate media too.

So let's talk about Yui Shousetsu: Yui Shousetsu was a real ronin in Edo Japan, and ran a dojo to train and help other ronin who have been displaced by the sweeping changes of the Tokugawa Shogunate. That's the hard end of the similarities between the historical Yui and game Yui. Historically, Yui was caught conspiring to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate along with several of his fellow ronin, but after the plot was discovered he committed suicide, and Shogunate officials also tortured and killed his family. As for Samurai Remnant Yui... Play the game 😊

On Nico asking if Gilgamesh was a real guy: To explain it as easily as possible, he's part of the earliest known written story, written roughly around 2100-1200 BC, it's called The Epic of Gilgamesh. I personally don't know much about it, but he's historically believed to have existed as the 5th king of the city state of Uruk, believed to have ruled it around 2900-2350 BC

Gilgamesh kinda falls into that difficult category of "he could be real but we'll probably never know for sure" between the epic of gilgamesh being so old, the older the language the less likely we are to be able to translate it and ancient civilization often having a mix of real and mythical rulers in their lists of rulers when the do provide one (looking at you egypt) it's just kinda a big mix of "maybe!" Unless a tomb for him is ever found

To get pedantic, it's "The Epic of Gilgamesh" and the oldest clay tablet fragments we have of pieces from it go back to 2100bc and are reflections of a much older story. Gilgamesh was the prototype superhuman or divine being that founded a nation. In his case Mesopotamia. The oral story may go back to as early as the 32nd century bc.
@xtty7644
@xtty7644 8 ай бұрын
The Epic of Gilgamesh goes sort of like this. Gilgamesh is the demigod king of the great city of Uruk. He is stronger and cooler than everyone, so he just goes around fucking everyone's wife and no one can fight back against him. The citizens are tired of getting their wives fucked by Gilgamesh every single night, so they pray to the gods to get Gilgamesh something else to do. The gods create the beast-man Enkidu, who is as strong and likes to fuck as much as Gilgamesh. Enkidu starts terrorizing the countryside, but he's found by a priestess of the goddess of sex who decides to civilize him. They fuck for seven days straight and then Enkidu becomes civilized. Gilgamesh hears about Enkidu and fights him for three days, after which they become best friends. They decide to go kill a giant holy boar together because that seems like the most badass thing to do. They kill the boar, but they somehow forgot that the boar was holy to the gods, so the gods are now pissed and they nuke Enkidu off the face of the Earth. Gilgamesh then realizes that death is a thing and that kind of sucks, so he decides to go to the underworld to get rid of death. After a bunch of mishaps, he meets a couple of immortals in the underworld and asks them how not to die. They tell Gilgamesh that they became immortal a long time ago and that there's no way to do it anymore. Gilgamesh goes home and is bummed that he's going to die eventually, but then he realizes he's still king of a great city, cheers up, and goes back to doing his kingly duties, presumably with less fucking the wives of other men. The end.

For some historical context on who Gilgamesh is…. Gilgamesh is from the Babylonian ‘Epic of Gilgamesh’, which is arguably the oldest surviving story in the world (being almost 4000 years old) and the archetype that the modern day heroes journey was based on. Within the Epic Gilgamesh starts as an arrogant demigod king who couldn’t give two shits about his subjects. However, through various misadventures involving a growing bromance between him and the wild man Enkidu, he eventually grew to become a wise ruler who values those around him. Since he is basically the prototype for all future heroes, he is considered to be the oldest heroic spirit and the ‘king of heroes’. This also manifests in the form of his planet sized ego. He also happens to be the richest mother fucker in the world since the Epic claimed he collected all the world’s treasure, which is why he acts as a shopkeeper selling some of these treasures.

Gilgamesh is a real mythological figure, hailing from the ancient mesopotamian poem, "The Epic of Gilgamesh." It is one of the oldest surving piece of literature (We've found and translated tables detailing most, but not all of the story), and the roots of many later tales can be seen in it. The tale detials the adventures of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, and his friend, Enkidu. Its actually a pretty interesting story, and I'd encourage you to find a retelling of it.

Random Fate Trivia #4 I'm sure the comments from last episode have already filled most of you in on who Tamamo Aria is and while I personally think it'd be great if you didn't know too much about her right now, I might as well add something relating to a Tamamo in the Nasuverse. Tamamo has been adoringly called a fox by the community because well, if you didn't know any better that's what she looks like right? It checks out. Though, she's not a true fox. She's actually based on a Jackal! And the reasoning behind it is long and might spoil other games that Nico might do so to cut a long story short (without giving too much away): She's basically a Jackal (lent from Indian culture) but because such a creature didn't exist in Asia of old, they assumed that what they meant was closer to a fox, and they do look pretty similar and so it stuck. Which is why, it's not really wrong to call Tamamo Aria a fox since that's basically what the Japanese have always thought what a Jackal is actually like. I personally find it fascinating how different cultures interpret something that was transmitted from other cultures. It's pretty intriguing, at least to me.

So now that you've controlled characters besides Iori and Saber, you should familiarize yourself with their moveset from the menu when you get the chance, and get a feel for their moves. In general, their one bar move is good for interrupting red attacks, and their two bar move is good at shredding Shell gauges. For example, Rogue Sabers two bar move summons his horse that he rides on for a period of time, in which you are invincible and can also drag enemies. Its very good at controlling the pace of a fight, especially when there are multiple enemies like with Lancer and Chiemon.

As you said, the devs put this guy in knowingly 90% of the players would know him that they gave you the biggest hint right away. His shop name, Babyloni-ya. And guess what it sounds similar with? Yep... Babylonia lol. An ancient state which Gil's tale originated from. The former was written and pronounced that way because the basic meaning of '-ya' in Japanese is actually shop. Which is why Iori accepted it but confused all the same because he never heard of the word Babylon before. And then if you add '-ya' to a noun then the meaning will be the profession of the noun. So what the name tells you basically is "the Babylon shop from Babylonia owned by the Babylon guy" Japan and their stupidly amazing wordplay xD

The thing about the Rouge Berserker fight is that it’s very lore accurate to what it would be like to fight a servant as a human. The vast majority of people without their own servant would get definitely and unapologetically be killed in a confrontation with a normal servant. That’s why it’s so hard to break down the shields as Iori, a normal human barely stands a chance against a servant. And then we have the berserker. They’re class skill, Madness Enhancement, is basically servant steroids. It makes them stupidly stronger than they would be without it, at the sacrifice a good portion of sanity. Basically, the vast majority of people would be absolutely destroyed AT BEST, and it’s because of Iori’s skill, and Saber having his back that they survive. This is reflected in the difficulty of the fight.

Gilgamesh is mythological. It's possible there existed an actual, historical Mesopotamian king with the name "Gilgamesh", and people just made up a bunch of stories about him after he died, but outside the name, the historical Gilgamesh and mythological Gilgamesh probably don't have much in common. Gilgamesh is the protagonist of a poem known as the "Epic of Gilgamesh", which is famous as being one of the oldest known examples of written fiction in human history. The short version: Long ago there was a city-state called Uruk, and its king, Gilgamesh, was a huge asshole. He made life so miserable for his subjects, that the citizens of Uruk all got together and prayed to Gods to send relief. The gods give birth to a wild man named Enkidu, who travels to Uruk and challenges Gilgamesh. Enkidu ends up getting his ass kicked, but it was such a fun fight that Gilgamesh and Enkidu become best friends. They go on a bunch of adventures, including one where they end up killing the Bull of Heaven. This upsets the Gods, and they sentence Enkidu to death as punishment. Gilgamesh is super bummed about his best friend's death, and also starts to fear his own death. He goes on a journey to discover the secret of immortality. A bunch of stuff happens, but this is the short version of the story, so we'll just say that his quest ends in failure. But this is actually a good thing, since after failing to become immortal, Gilgamesh learns to both value life and appreciate his own limits. Now humbled, he grows into a wise king, and sagaciously rules over Uruk until his death, and his subjects actually honor and worship his memory.

So to explain Nico, Gilgamesh wasn’t an actual person. The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the earliest known pieces of written literature in human history. It’s essentially become the very foundation of all heroic tales and religion throughout history. So yeah, kind of a big deal but also not something most people know casually.

The funny thing about your criticism of the game being slow (which I totally get, to be fair) is that Samurai Remnant still feels *fast-paced* compared to the original Fate visual novel. That thing is literally 50 hours of text and a lot of it is just exposition or random comedic scenes of them having meals before they go off to fight. Some of it is fun, some of it I felt was extraneous, and some of it was just otaku humor that perhaps didn't age very well.

Yeah, it was mentioned in the comments of the last video that the older the historical character is the more powerful they are, and that is most seen in Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is the hero of well The story of Gilgamesh. This is a story that dates all the way back to Babylon and is considered the oldest story we as humans know of. The story is not complete as parts are missing and acheologists are still discovering parts to this day. Funny enough Gilgamesh in his story is kinda like Hercules, in a muscle bro sort of way. The tale has Gilgamesh go through life, meet friends, some die, he fears death himself so Gilgamesh goes on a story to find eternal life, fails, comes back to see those that passed continue to live through the memories. Which is kinda poetic as this story is the oldest remembered story so Gilgamesh himself in a way found eternal life. So yeah, not much like his fate counterpart, but he is considered the strongest servant so the designers wanted the strongest servant to not be another muscle dude, but more toned down.

Nico, some advice for this game and a person who completed 100% of this game. I posted some tips back in episode 2 but I will post it here again in case you missed it and some newly added tips. 1. Affinity (Servants) and valor (not unlocked yet) are broken. It can interrupt enemies' attacks (glowing in red) and can gather enemies (like a magnet, you will see enemies gather together in your minimap) for them to hit with the skills. Try to get stats that build those. Especially affinity as it's useful in spirit font missions where Saber or getting rogue servants to help you in capturing territories. 2. There are some missable logs. One of them is an "important area" (most of them are recognizable either as big buildings or areas that look unique and you did one "important area" back in episode 3). You have to press R3 (near the important site) and then see a blue pillar of light. There are 20 of them and one is missable at the beginning of chapter 2 (next episode), so watch out for it. 3. Build statues(unlock later in Chapter 2) in your workshop (home), it's good money to be sold to a certain merchant. Also, you should save scum if you messed up the QTE. 4. Constantly check your map for Digression (like some picky penguins mentioned before). Some are missable if you progress the story (ritual). 5. Try to buy all building materials (if possible) from all merchants in each chapter. The shop reset each chapter but gets more expensive in each chapter. 6. Try to use Iori' skill Riposte though it has a tight window. It's extremely helpful, for boss fights and certain monsters. 7. The Local Trial (map objective) will make you beat a certain enemy. Some of those enemies only spawn in certain areas. If you check your map, and see the enemies not in that area (highlight in red of the specific area). You should leave and enter another map and reenter for that specific enemy to appear. 8. The way spirit font works is basically Othello. Try to surround the enemies(red) or blank(white) spirit font with your spirit font (blue) to capture it without going there, but it can ONLY CAPTURE ONE at a time. ie, White/White/Blue and you capture one of the white like this Blue/White/Blue, it will turn Blue/Blue/Blue. It will NOT capture if it's like White/White/White/Blue and capture the piece in the beginning Blue/White/White/Blue WILL NOT TURN all of them Blue. The red/white spirit font has to be SURROUNDED by your Blue spirit font. Hope it makes sense.

Well, everyone else is explaining Gilgamesh, so I guess I'll break the mold by explaining... Gilgamesh! The Final Fantasy version, specifically. Just for fun. Final Fantasy Gilgamesh is, despite the name, actually based off of a Japanese historical figure, Musashibo Benkei. Benkei was a warrior monk who was said to have attributes of a demon and be able to defeat 200 men in every battle he fought. Popular legend goes that Benkei posted himself at Gojo Bridge in Kyoto, where he would challenge passing swordsmen to duels and then take their weapons when they lost. He was said to have collected 999 swords in this manner. However, he lost his 1000th duel to Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who he then sweared allegiance to. Eventually, he died in battle to protect Yoshitsune, and, like any cool anime character, died standing up. You can see a good amount of this inspiration in FF!Gilgamesh. The myriad of weapons, the way his fights tend to take place near bridges, even his size, as Benkei was said to be 6'7 when he was 17! It's a pretty interesting inspiration for such an interesting character.

Here's a tip for fighting Servants: When you want to break the Shell Gauge, switch to Saber. Iori cannot normally damage Shell Gauges, Servants damage it with every attack. Don't save Saber for when the Gauge is broken, use them when it's still up so you can break it faster

Nico, there are several characters that appear in this game who are considered fan favorites, but I won't reveal who they are because it is far more entertaining to see you guess. In regards to servants, servant power are basically based on clout, as fame also empowers a servant. This is also part of the reason why fighting in their country of origin makes them more powerful. Comparing servants and humans is also unfair, it would be like asking why a bodybuilder isn't able to beat a tank in a tug of war. On Gilgamesh, in his first introduction the series, his title is "The King of Kings" aka the first king in recorded human history (at least literature-wise). And as the first "Hero", he is obscenely powerful. He is arrogant but he can absolutely back up his words. The only real way to beat him is to use his own pride against him and hope that you can kill him before he starts taking you seriously.

To answer your question, we do not know whether or not Gilgamesh truly existed, but he is in fact the protagonist of the Epic of Gilgamesh. We can assume, based off of what we learned in his epic that his rule would have taken place sometime in the beginning of the Early Dynastic Period Circa 2900-2350 BC. According to the legend he was post humoursly deified.

Gilgamesh is wildly considered to be a real historical Sumerian king though his epic may have been greatly exaggerated. He is, however, the first hero of myth and legend in recorded history and is why he calls himself the King of Heroes.

8:53 Mythological and POTENTIALLY historical. There’s a chance he was posthumously deified. Gilgamesh is one of THOSE mythologic heroes in that he’s kinda absurd. Almost like he was coauthored by a teenage weeb. What do I mean? Well for instance, he’s 2/3’s god because his demigod parent was possessed by another god during his conception. Yeah.

So one fascinating little detail about how we came to know about the Epic of Gilgamesh, is that probably one of the only reasons the story survived was that it was used as some sort of writing exercise for scribes and the like, so there were a LOT of copies of it, that means that even though there is no one complete version of it there are many, and I mean many fragments that have been used to piece the story together as like an ancient jigsaw puzzle. That also means that to this day they keep finding new parts of it. Of course, the issue here is that there are gaps in the epic itself (how did Enkidu, created to fight/kill Gilgamesh ended up becoming his best friend and potential lover no one knows because that part is missing), but we do know the overall gist of the story and how insane it can get as well as how it ends. To anyone interested in a short retelling there’s a nice video by Overly Sarcastic Productions with decent details and reasonably up to date info. If I remember correctly though, the last bit of it may have potential spoilers as to the identity of a different servant since Red rants about the character designs from Fate.

to answer your question about gilgamesh: its hard t say if he was ever in some way real but his story is basically one of the earliest myths of his type and thus gilgamesh can be considered, like THE first hero of myth,, from whom similar heroes are in some way taking elements fromhim loosely.

There's not as many tutorials after this chapter, though the game will keep adding stuff to add variety. This was mostly an introduction to the world and war, which is why the pacing is slower, but the end of the chapter shows what happens when Fate gets going. Once masters and servants start clashing, things get heated...literally in this case. That said, a lot of people misunderstand what Fate is really about. Yes, the action is great and most of its entries are battle royales between servants, but to me what makes this franchise my favorite is the focus on its characters and the ideological conflicts between them, especially when so many of them come from different time periods and cultures. The war is the setting more so than the plot. Although this game is more straightforward in that sense, being an action game instead of a novel, so you have characters like Aria who...is funny but doesn't have much depth, and a lot of fights against monsters and mobs to keep it less text heavy. TL;DR: the big battles are great, but it's not the type of series that has super fast pacing by going from battle to battle, especially at the start, but the build up is worth it as you saw here. So if you're already enjoying it, you've seen nothing yet!
