DRAYCOTT AND CHURCH WILNE: Erewash Parish #5 of 14

The name of this one is exactly what it says on the tin. This is a parish made up of two settlements, but before we get into either of them though, the road from Hopwell which leads down into the larger of the two gives us our first look at the former route of the Derby Canal. This is not the only time we’ll see the canal in Erewash. It’s in the process of being restored.
Heading South into the main village there’s a couple of things to cover before we can even start walking around. On Hopwell Road we have a cemetery which was founded in 1901. Notable graves include Private Lewis Hinds of the Yorkshire Regiment, who died in 1920 and is buried in the same plot as his father, Joseph, who outlived him by five years
It was once an industrial town, famed for the Victoria Mill, which still stands. The mill shut down in 1970 but the building is intact and has, like many old mills in Derbyshire, been converted into flats.It was a tenement mill. Its occupants were small lace manufacturers. At the time of its completion in 1907 it was the largest lace manufacturing plant in Europe - some say in the world. The four-storey building with its green copper capped ornamental clock tower still dominates the skyline
Whilst the main village grew much larger because of its better communications, its little brother declined. It was the earlier of the two settlements in the 7th or 8th century as St Chad used it as his base to spread Christianity thought what was then the Kingdom of Mercia. Progressively though the ages the village has disappeared. Its problems with flooding would lead to the now larger settlement being named the way it is: “Dry Cote” or a “Dry Place”. I grew up in Draycott in a house on Walter Street in the 1950's and my playground was many of the areas shown in your video including Church Wilne. My grandad was sexton at the cemetery where the video starts. After I got married in 1967 we bought a brand new house in Thoresby Crescent and lived there until emigrating to New Zealand in 1974. It was wonderful to see this video which brings back many good memories of my childhood. Thank you so much.

The school playing field used to be on the other side of Hopwell road, well it was when I was a kid. It's now a millennium park or something.

By the way the nickname "Neddie's" I believe came from the donkey's that pulled barges on the canal and were stabled in Draycott overnight. Of course that could be just an urban myth!

Loved this! I live in Breaston but grew up in Draycott and walk these every day. One thing - in the picture bits, you have an image named as "Church Wilne Reservoir" but the image is actually Trent Lock a couple of miles down the road in Sawley.
