One amazing thing about yo kai watch, is that it can have some absolutely torturous, annoying fights and still be enjoyable. Every time I load up a dr maddiman/nogut, tarantutor, sproink/hoggles or mckraken fight I want to hurt someone because of how annoying they can be, yet I always come back. It’s like the dark souls of creature collectors and I love it.

Lmao I got softlocked on Dame Demona and was running low on heals. I had to speed up my reaction time with her attacks to finally defeat her. She was one of the hardest video game bosses I've ever fought as a result. Even if there wasn't a softlock, she still would've been very hard.

I did a no expendekai run and I was only allowed to grab a single yo kai using YKW1 camera and holly shit, the yo kai that you can find with no expendekai are good and it made me value some yo kais more than before

Getting Snartle at the start of the game in YWK3 using D’wanna, Treetter, and Snitchin felt incredible, I used Snitchin to do DoT while making him unable to move with Treetter and D’wanna. Befriended him first try too

Fun fact about The yw2 Dame Demona boss: you CAN get past the trigger by hugging the bottom wall, thanks to weird hit boxes that trigger the fight and the player hitbox that kinda molds with the wall as you slowly slink past

Getting gud is definitely what I had to do. I just started playing Yo-kai Watch. I wasn't exactly paying attention to the battle mechanics but I somewhat understood the basics. It worked well until I got to the underwear boss. He wiped out 4 of my yokai in a couple of minutes. When Whisper said "I can't believe we lost," and I reluctantly agreed. It was the first battle I lost. Going in the second time, instead of just spamming my soultimate move, I was actively paying attention to my attacks. Keeping my healer alive, deciding who can/will take that boil blast, and keeping track of my items. My soultimate moves came when the boss let his guard down instead of as soon as they were available. When I won I was genuinely satisfied with my improvement in the mechanics. I still lost 2 of my yokai and may have clutched it with rice balls and sandwiches but still. I got gud.

One series is made by Nintendo, in Smash, not the most popular in the west and considered a cult classic. The other lost all popularity outside of japan after the second game, negatively stereotyped as a clone of Pokémon and is made by a smaller company, Level-5, which no longer has a western branch, due to it shutting down, meaning no new localisations of the series. Sure Mother 3 hasn’t been officially localised, but Nintendo still recognises the series. Yo-kai Watch still gets games in Japan, but we’re unable to play them due to the game slipping under people’s radars.

One other example I would love to mention of great design is with Sproink in YWK1, It Shows you that unlike Slimamander you don't always have to go for the obvious weak spot or else he will either tank everything you throw at him or he'll unleash his Soultimate so you gotta think outside of the box and teaches you that you should look for other things like for example his head, or Phantasmurai's Sword or Mckraken's Whiskers. Also i have traumas with the Sproink fight because it took me like 2 months to beat him till i learned what i just said, so yeah he's great.

One of my favorite mechanics of Yo-kai Watch has to be the Pin. And this is mainly due to bosses that allow you to use the pin to either interact with the Boss itself (using the pin to hit the crow giving Gutsy Bones the coins he needs to use his Crank-A-Kai), to interacting with the background of the Bosses environment (using the pin to pop the hearts that Dr. Maddiman uses for his Blood Refill Move or the whole "guess what's different in the background" aspect of Teastroyer's boss fight).

The pin is amazing. One of my favourite boss gimmicks is Infinipea's wheel rotation. You rotate the wheel, you rotate the boss and its weak spots. Its so simple yet effective.

I think my worst mistake when starting this game was underestimating its combat system, I thought all I had to do was wait and do the soultimate every time I could, how wrong I was, luckily sproink gave me a stop, a boss that made me rethink how to play, I made a better team, taking into account the positions, I trained, I stocked up on food, I learned the boss mechanics and forged skills and knowledge that allowed me to beat almost all the bosses after the museum chapter the first time. great design

Genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, and a classic game. My favorite part about Snartle is that he only attacks you if you Jaywalk AT the crosswalk. Not only that, if you walk off of the crosswalk and back on, he doesn’t attack. The real lesson you learn from Snartle isn’t “don’t Jaywalk” it’s “Jaywalk such that the angry swords guy doesn’t kill you”

crank a kai sort of ruins difficulty curve for main story... also enjoying the combat, I have a horrible habit of grinding in rpgs because I find it fun and blowing through story bosses (I had a level 50 dominion by the end of Kanji's dungeon in persona 4) divine paradise was a great challenge though, and it's really a shame that YKW3 doesn't have a similar challenge (as far as I remember, I spent the least amount of time in that game so I may have missed something) tbf I am remembering stuff from over 5 years ago, so this all could be wrong. glad to see someone else enjoying the series all these years later.

I remember in times that I played Yokai Watch, I quit because they were too hard for my elementary school self back then. But when a few months passed I came back because I had already beat my Pokémon games, or if Kirby wasn’t doing it for me. Overcoming these bosses gave me a sense of fulfillment and relief. Yokai Watch had also made me more aware of money because stocking up on food was EXPENSIVE. But I had so much losing, then losing again, and finally being able to complete the story. And I’m glad they’re so much to do outside of the story as well! The Yokai Watch series is really great, I just wish more people embraced it so that we’d have a localized version of the 4th game. 😭

In my humble opinion, Kat kraydel is not a well thought out boss. In order to have a good chance to beat her you need to get tons of rare souls that ask you to either have both versions of the game or super rare yo kai. So... Cash loss or bad RNG. You can still beat her without that but there's ton of luck involved even with lv99 dudes. Love YKW2 to pieces though.

I remember trying my hand at beating Kat Kraydel before, but it always did feel more difficult than it needed to be. Granted, I didn't have a good team layout and wasn't very good at actually doing strategies at the time, but I remember the souls mechanic being really grindy to an exhausting level. Plus, with a boss like that, who straight up nukes teams in a single hit, in a game where I thought grinding spots were very minimal and took longer compared to the Blossomnoko trick in the original, I told myself that it probably wasn't worth it. I might go for it again now that I'm wiser, actually trying to employ some strategy, but who knows. I honestly thought Oracanos from the original was a lot more fun and better designed. Difficult as hell, but the items exclusive the original and that noko trick made it more manageable to get better. I even remember hating how they stripped away the original Oni Time and made it really bad in the sequel.

I concur, some of the bosses are just blatanty unfair. I remember I only needed one more hit to defeat her and all 3 of my yo kai decided to just loaf and I lost. The RNG in these games is just ludicrous. Not to mention if you even want to 100% the game you need to defeat her 100 times. Imagine running through the entire inferno 100 times. Like, what? I finished playing yo-kai watch watch jam not too long ago and the end of that game has a VERY high difficulty spike for the pre-final boss and the final boss. It really sucks because there really isn’t a good way for getting XP outside of XP orbs. And it mostly comes down to luck if you beat the boss because if all of your team dies, you die not too long after. ... Good game tho

If we're only counting the main story, 1 is the only game I actually found hard. 3 is easy because you can spam qr codes and have an s rank team before junkernaut, and 2 is still difficult, but not hard. I know people will talk about Dame Demona, but she really isn't that bad once you learn the gimmick. Or maybe I was just overlevelled. Mckraken on the other hand, is real bad. But if post game counts, then 2 (psychic specters in particular) is the hardest game by far. Still love the games though!

I love this game series, though I haven't actually played 3 because I didn't think I'd like the changes to the battle system. I remember fighting startle for the first time in 1 and dying because of course I did. After that I didn't fight him until I got my s rank watch which is when I had a deep understanding of the mechanics and i can now beat him consistently. And don't get me started on that final stretch in 2. I remember when that happened to me and because I was too stubborn to give up I ended up grinding against the evil guys everywhere. I remember when I finally did it I was so proud of myself. The infinite inferno is also one of my favorite postgame areas in gaming. Probably just me on that but whatever

I should get back into Yo-Kai Watch. I love the first game! Honestly, I think the postgame boss Wobblewok is a great blueprint for jrpg bosses. Wobblewok is a boss that can only take damage from physical or spirit damage at a time, so the boss is literally made to test your ability to teambuild! You can't just use the Charming or Brave unity to steamroll your way through the boss. No, you need to take your time, slowly build a team of multiple legendary Yo-Kai, pray for some good luck from the Krank-a-Kai for Cruncha, figure out how Terror Time works so tou can get Vampiric Fangs, etc. etc. It's such a hard boss to prepare for, but it's very satisfying to see your hard work pay off.

The only thing I could criticize is the big amount of qr codes and passwords that the majority of players use to gain access to strong items or yo-kai so early in the game that it gets to easy. I think there should have been a qr code limitation so that some of those could only be used after completing a particular part of the story.

They already have a limit since Crank-A-Kai Coins can only be used up to 3 times a day. On top of that, high Rank Yo-Kai especially S Ranks have super slow level growth compared to low Ranks, so they can't get as strong as fast, making it hard for them to carry you long term with how steep level growth gets past the 40s.

Ive been playing yokai watch ever since i was little and i remember restarting the game during me replaying yokai watch 2 i dont know what changed i beat the boss first try but on my rerun i got destroyed, i had to completely restart the game. One of my favorite things about Snartle isn't just that he's an insanely powerful enemy you can easily befriend for your own use, but he is a rare yo-kai, meaning he should reasonably be obtainable elsewhere in an easier fight. And even if that's true, why would you go look for snartle's normal spawn area when you can just cross the street and have him appear anywhere?

Not really because the high Ranks you get from the Crank have reslly slow level growth and don't make your teambuilding skills any better to balance out getting S Ranks so early.

my first time i beat snartle my rank was B when i was able to build a balance team i tried fighting it if i could beat him then once i beat him once my capture them all instinct kick in and grind him out until i befriend him and with kat krydel i did some really unconventional way on beating her by using three scarasol forcing them to always in defense then spam healing items as kat krydel hit herself with reflects i did this because i didn't want to scratch my touch pad too bad like when i spam soultimates demn those are some great memories xD

I got stuck on the final boss in Yo-Kai Watch 2. I wasn’t soft locked. There is a Yo-Kai that spawns before you approach Dame Demona and you can just battle it over and over again until you grind without starting over. I did that on my first play through because I went into the game mostly blind. Grinding is indeed possible. I was playing Fleshy Souls if that means anything.

I remeber in my recent yo kai watch 2 replay one of the bosses were super tough and I died, I almost died again till I got went and planed out my team and battle strategy and I won, it just felt so cool to do that

I honestly really loved the difficulty of both ykw1 and 2. The bosses give enough of a difficulty spike where beating them all on the first try isnt super feasible, (without some overpowered secret yokai of course) but the spike isnt so massive i feel like i have to go back and grind for hours on end. Sometimes even just trial and error with the same team will allow you to beat a boss, im kinda sad people didnt like these very much because these are some of the best and smoothest rpg games ive ever played

One moment they say the game is bad because it's too easy and the next minute when you point out the bosses, they say the game is bad because it's too hard and is badly designed. Pick one or just say you have no skill. Lol. Whitney is a strange instance because she actually does what MOST RPGs expect of the player of preparing for a boss fight, strategizing, considering your options, etc. However, because Pokemon NEVER encourages typical RPG practices like that, she only SEEMS harder than she actually is.

But if you actually know about x items and type advantages or actually bother to get that traded machop from the department store, she really isn't that much of a problem Oh! Another thing I wanted to thank you for is bringing up the softlock in Yo Kai Watch 2!! I have Fleshy Souls and I've been unable to progress in the game because my team isn't strong enough to fight the final boss but I can't leave to grind them up 😔 it's surprisingly something I've never seen people say when talking about the game, but it hasn't ruined my view on the franchise as a whole. I still have memories of playing Yo Kai Watch with my friends in late 2015 early 2016 when there wasn't a new Pokémon game yet. We would help each other on progressing the story, find hidden bosses like Snartle, and oh man one of the biggest challenges we had was trying to befriend Noko 🤣 It was really fun :) Overall, this is a very fantastic video that brings up problems video games and the community has regarding difficulty, and what makes Yo Kai Watch so good at it! Definitely one of my favorite videos on youtube for sure 👍

I breezed througj yo kai watch 1 as the crank-a-kai was generous with S and rare yokai and the Exp and Money reward was generous enough to always use the best bait. In yo kai watch 2 however thats not the case althrough the freebie yo kai you get from the story are always a good adition to your team. This results in either you grinding for Exp or resources or having to overcome strong foes each time your watch ranks up with strategy or looking up yo kai evolutions to get high ranking friends that way

You can totally recruit Snartle in the first chapter of YKW1,and l love it. I'd been trying to do that since I first played through the game and I actually managed to do it last playthrough,lol.

Also want to know why Yokai Watch is better than Pokémon… it’s the occasional moments where you Learn what the heck happened to a boss from a previous game… like in YKW3 how many of us were surprised by who was running the Sushi and Tempura restaurants… can’t wait to see what happens to Ghoulfather and Agent X if or when Watch 4 gets localized

I started with the First game and left the franchise on the second installment (mostly because When I learnt there was a third installment it was too Late). I Don't remember them being specially challenging (I always had at least a healer so maybe its that), and I didn't even grind. Now, I must say, It was quite fun, and the second game final boss was actually a nightmare and the First time I've grinded for medicines. So thank you yokai watch, you turned a complete wuss into a Half wuss.

something funny about fighting snartle or any miniboss that can be befriended is that if you get a snottle in the early game and have a sense of skill the 9 times out of 10 you win everytime because of snottles 2 insprits his soultimate and his normal inspirt soultimate pervents the yo kai from acting and the normal causes confusion if you layer these then snartle/miniboss can never move Edit: lol didn’t even notice you would mention snottle in the video lol 6:40

Honestly, Dame Dedtime was the worst boss I ever faced Thank god Dame Demona wasn't as shitty. Sure it still steals your attacks, but not as bad as Level Steal and it's also one pretty engaging battle

Yo-Kai watch 2 doesn’t present a soft-lock. While yes i acknowledge the fact that the game’s difficulty spike at the end is absolutely disgusting, it gives you the resources to build their teams to be able to defeat dame dedtime. The wicked yo-kai give like 600 (which is around x6 times more than the elite wicked minibosses) per pop and you can buy shrimp rice balls, talisman, gear, and even exporbs in the present, so while being a tough situation, it’s not a “soft-lock” per say.
