Everybody is “fasting” because it’s the latest greatest sexiest thing to do to “lose weight”…but how do you know what to do and whether it is EFFECTIVE? This video reviews EFFECTIVE FASTING and explains the difference between INTERMITTENT FASTING and EXTENDED FASTING toward INSULIN SENSIVITY. Use fasting effectively so that it becomes a part of your way of eating, not as another failed diet.
Research Discussed...
DIABETES UNPACKED….Ed: Zoe Harcomb contributing authors include Dr Jason Fung and Dr Robert Cywes

One of the unsung heroes of practicing intermittent fasting is that by training yourself to run on your own fat stores, I have found that when I am in a situation where appropriate keto food is not available, I can effortlessly choose not to eat until I can get the right food. I did my first 5 day fast while my son was in the ICU for a week - and I had very limited options for keto food. I just decided to fast until he was out of danger. I drank water and coffee only for those days. Pretty sure it got me through one of the worst times as a parent.

I can go a day without eating quite easily now. Before, I was ready to go out and kill my own food if I went without for more than about 4 hours. Glad your child is well, as a parent myself, I can relate. Been there. Good luck. Let's keep spreading the word.

Everytime I listen to this guy I gain more knowledge of what needs to be done. I did everything wrong for many years, drinking, smoking eating everything in the comfort food category. I was in Vietnam, exposed to Agent Orange (weed killer) for a year. In 2018 the VA tests showed nodules in my lung, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure. I began the routine of IF, cut the carbs and SUGAR from my diet. Last year testing revealed the nodules were gone, I am almost below 6 AIC, lost 15 pounds and feel better than when I was forty, 74 now. It’s hard to believe what you eat can have such a dramatic effect on health. You almost have to do it to believe it. But, believe it. I am indebted to Doctors like this one. After all, isn’t an honest Doctor all we really want from the health system?

My target is to get rid of toxic stuffs in my body that has been there for years. The most number of hours I did is 24 hours but I also did it with exercise and healthy diet of meat and veggies. It is hard to get rid of my alcohol consumption but I was able to. I am now 149lbs from 172. My height is 5’7” so I’m in the proper BMI range. Intermittent fasting is a challenge but it could be the best sport that I ever played. Now I am not afraid to consume meat and eggs cause I am eating veggies too. No more bread or carb for me.

I've been eating a low/no carb diet for years. I eat once a day and I feel clean and light. I don't suffer colds or flu, I don't feel deprived or depressed about what I eat or the frequency of my meals. I train my body, ipso facto my mind, using resistance and body weight. I have no need of prescription drugs. When people ask me about my lifestyle, this usually happens when I'm noticed not eating, I tell them what I don't eat; it's easier that way. I'll go into greater detail if the person shows an interest.

Yeah, I did the rolling 72 hours and 48 hours for over a couple of months then went back to eating one to two meals a day and then skipped a day here or there or sometime just skip a couple of days. And I was working out during my rolling fasting days as well, not with the same intensity I did when I eat on consecutive days but I did work out. So you're doing the blood test which is a good thing, what you might want to do is get in touch with other groups like Cole Robinson's group or and others because there are people who are doing really well on those rolling fasting diets.

I agree that when we speak about fasting this term is badly defined. We are talking about feeding and non-feeding, so cyclic feeding [1], feeding duration [2], and total feeding over an extended period [3] (yields average time on a cyclic basis). I am diminishing the fasting viewpoint because in my view these three noted "factors" need to be addressed. What is the benefit of cyclic feeding? Is this even important? What is the optimal time for a feeding session? And how many hours of feeding are actually needed in, say a 7 day period. I am postulating that less than 30 hours per 7 days is problematic, but also feeding hours greater than 60 hours per 7 days are sub-optimal. So bang, 40-50 hours per 7 days. Mix and match as you will.

Absolutely agree. Effective fasting different for eat patient depending on many factors as well as activity levels. A pro tour de France rider would literally go unconscious if they tried fasting and high level exercise. Think about pro level body builders who are eating every couple hours, even set the alarm to eat at night and yet stay at 15% or less body fat, go down to 4 and 5% body fat for a show and still have great lipid profile. So agree. Effective fasting different for each person. No one size fits all. Love your videos.

I watched a video where the presenter suggested occasionally eating a low-GI type of starch like rye toast, and have some butter and a good chunk of cheese to that. The argument was that the fat will result in the glucose from the bread being released more slowly because of the butter and cheese.

I knew I was doing well when I decided to go from a planned two-day fast to a three day, just after doing a 2.2 mile hike (which was about 7 weeks post-op total left hip replacement). Listen to your body. (And there have been fasts where I've stopped early, too).

Excellent presentation. Super logical and obviously comes from a place of wisdom upon the subject. Dr Cywes, could you speak to how you might handle a dirty carnivore diet if you have the beginnings of kidney disease? It still seems to me that a carnivore/keto diet is still the healthier approach because of its positive effects on Blood pressure. Even if its higher in phosphates. But I would love to hear what you think on the subject.

Maybe try going higher fat low protein. Some people eat too much protein and stress their liver too much when their liver isn't in great shape already. Maybe 60-85g protein and up to like 200g of fat to get the caloric requirements given you don't need weight loss. Easiest way to do that is cook bacon and scramble eggs into that without draining, it takes up all the fat so it's not free liquid. You can also have pork sausage meat which is usually very fat heavy, a You can add butter or tallow to ground beef that's too lean, or put it on steaks or pork chops, etcetera. Just up your fats if your liver shows raised numbers.

Was going to ask if black coffee is ok during an extended fast. But now I hear that I should not do it. Fine with me. Great talk.

surprised to hear cywes say an extended fast beyond 24 hours isn't his recommendation for veterans who are in shape. i assumed there were still benefits via autophagy for such tenured omni-carnivores even if there is an elevated risk of some muscle catabolism.

And he said especially "for the slim ones," like me. I'm not sure why he singled us out. Why would my body eat muscle if there is fat available? I never lose strength when I fast, but now I'm a bit concerned about it. One thing I know is that I have never gotten sick since I started fasting, and being sick is a very direct way to lose strength.

As a long term carnivore, I prefer to do IM to allow my intestinal track the time to repair and heal from the previous meal.

Well, a snack in Greece is not always an emotional thing. Most seniors today eat 5-6 times a day, because their doctor told so. Three main meals and in between a fruit or a yogurt. These are their snacks. They eat between the meals,t because they were told so and not because they need to put into their mouth something (emotional eating) like us today (a donut, some choc etc).

So how often should we IF when we’ve become insulin sensitive and how often should we eat 2/3/4 meals a day? Thank you

Hi dr Cywes and everybody! Please help for carb cravings! I am a woman, 52, lean, sporty. My whole life I had sleeping problems and gut issues like gaz and later also tendon pains and burning painful feet and restless legs and fatigue. I do keto and IF and OMAD since 7 months, I feel good, problems are gone. But every 5 or so days I suddenly get a terrible carb craving, I have chocolat or crackers with honey. Next day the tendon pain is back. Then I am motivated again and do keto and IF again and feel great. 5 or 6 days later the cravings come back. Get the chocolat, honey and crackers out of the house, I can not do it. I feel panic if I don't have them. When I get the craving I walk in the house like a bear in a cage, totally frustrated. Why can I go 5 or 6 days without cravings and why do they come back? I get the cravings when I am tired. I get tired from bad night sleep. I get bad sleep after sport (tennis and horse riding). I love sport but it excites me (I am very sensitive) and makes sleeping difficult.

You need more animal fats to help with sleep and cravings.

@@thespear4083 Hi! Thanks! I eat lots of animal fat. Fatty meat and fish, fish oil, heavy cream and butter with my veggies, egg yolks, every evening as dessert I eat a big bowl of full fat sheep yogurt with mascarpone (50% fat!). I am discovering that I am sensitive to histamine. The histamine causes me lack of sleep (waking up in the middle of the night being hot and sweaty). And then being tired causes sugar cravings. Now trying to eat lower histamine foods and using DAO before dinner.

I would not say we have forgotten as much as gov and the food industry starting in the 1920s started pushing breakfast lunch dinner plus a mid day snack. Also having a sugar based desert after the last meal of the day was heavily marketed. There was a huge resurgence in this type of target marketing at the end of the 1970s early 80s. You will notice how while huge trending upward there was a even more significant spike in T2D NAFLD and cancer rates hetweennthe 80s and 2010. A 30 yr orgey feast of seed oils HFCS high carb diet and a push towards eating every 3-4 hours of waking. The true western diet as we know it today was matured in the mid 80s thru early 90s.
