Great video as always. Have always wondered, why does top and bottom spin change how high the second balls come up on a head ball break?
@DrDaveBilliards2 күн бұрын
Thanks. The reason for the direction change is spin transfer. For example, backspin transfers slight topspin to the 1 which transfers slight backspin to the 2nd-row-balls, causing them to come back more.

@@DrDaveBilliards The effects of spin transfer continually surprise me. It totally seems like something you could just ignore when considering paths out of a 15-ball rack, but it obviously is not!

I was once playing a casual doubles game, it came down to the last two balls one for us is solids and eight ball for the other team. I decided that I would post up the cue ball right behind our ball because it was in the way of the eight ball. My teammate ask me why on Earth I would do that instead of trying to pocket the ball? I said to them with the angle I had it pocketing it would be essentially impossible, so by doing that if they hit our ball it's a foul and we get ball in hand or if they don't hit it but still miss the eight ball and miss the pocket and we have a much better angle on the next shot. Sure enough, we won that game. The lesson here? Don't be afraid to play a defensive shot.

All great stuff, but I'm struggling to apply most of these strategies in typical league scenarios where the tables are extremely worn and slow, and we still use warped plastic triangle racks, ensuring the racks are never good.
@DrDaveBilliards2 күн бұрын
@@1Andypro Good point. If the balls aren’t racking tightly, the break strategies aren’t as effective, but everything else in the video still applies.
