My mother and I went the Clinique counter at Sak's in Beverly Hills the week it opened! I was 19 and she was 45. We were so impressed and excited and it was so much fun doing the skin type test and getting our products. My mother used Clinique until she died at 92. Her skin was gorgeous and almost wrinkle-free (yes, she was genetically blessed). We used to love it when Clinique had special mini gift sets free with purchase. We'd make a day out of going to Bullock's Wilshire, shopping Clinique, followed by a lovely lunch and fashion show at the Tea Room. Over my life (I am 73), I have had highly sensitive, reactive skin and Clinique was a life-saver for me, especially because it was fragrance-free. I strayed away from Clinique many times over the decades but usually ended up returning. Although I no longer shop their products, I have a fond place in my heart for the innovative concept behind them. Of course, my memories with my beautiful mother are most responsible for my affection for the brand. Thank you so much for this video. You made my day!

Long term Clinique user, never could tolerate the toner but the regimen of soap rinse moisturizer and properly removing makeup plus moisture boost I have great skin at 62. I can’t tolerate scented products so it’s perfect and they have the best tubing mascara I’ve found. Clover blush and black honey lip balm and I’m good to go.

I was a counter manager for Clinique for years. Out of all the cosmetic brands I’ve worked for in the past 20+ years Clinique gave consultants the best training and was an amazing and fun brand to work for. However, being able to try the highest of brand name products I still go to my CeraVe products with the best of results.

I was a Clinique Consultant for many years in the late 1980s/early 1990s. I agree that we had the best training and I loved working for the brand! I still love Clinique today but now I use a broad range of products from many brands. I still have the pins we used to wear on our lab coats - the silver ‘C’ and the enamel pin with the 3-step products. A spray of Aromatics Elixir takes me down a very happy memory lane ….

Wow thank you for that history lesson! I started using Clinique in the mid 70's as a teenager. And yes I went to the department store and slid those little knobs to find out what products were good for my skin 'type". It served its purpose for me at the time. Luckily I've always had an interest in my skin and took care of it early on, except for like you said the sun protection. I still used oils, cooked my pale skin, and tried to look like the girl from St. Tropez which is what I battle now that I am 60. The discoloration and loss of firmness is from too much sun exposure. So young women today have a huge advantage having the knowledge we didn't have back then.

The advertising for Clinique was also ground breaking. Before Clinique, skin care and makeup products were shown on a model. Clinique advertisements only had pictures of an individual product. This minimalist marketing was revolutionary. I used Clinique. I was a 4 because of my oily, acne-prone skin.

Actually, the first person to use the lab coats at the makeup counters was Helena Rubenstein back in the 1930s. She thought that this scientific appearance would instill more confidence in her cosmetics. She didn't have actual dermatologists creating anything though.

I worked as an art director for many years and designed ads for stores like Broadway Southwest, Macys, Abraham and Strauss. The Clinique ads were the most fun to design because of their strong, graphic approach which reflected their clean packaging. I still have some of them saved in my portfolio and use their products off and on. Incidentally, designing ads for cosmetic giants like Clinique, Lancome, Estee Lauder etc triggered my passion for skincare and eventually become a loyal fan of my most beloved, Dr. Dray.

@@liseerenee I started my career at Broadway Southwest in '87 in Phoenix, AZ where I designed most of the cosmetic ads for various vendors before moving to Macys in NYC in 1990. I also designed catalogs for Finley Fine Jewelry in NYC, but cosmetic and fragrance ads were by far my favorite products because you can really play around with the shapes of the bottles, lipsticks etc. Also love designing shoe ads for the same reason.

My mom worked for Clinique in Foley's (ha!) for 25 years. I remember her white coat that she chuckled about, the little slide box, the mint green packaging, all the training she attended, and all the products she would bring home (employee discounts) for both of us to try. I use some of their products to this day, mostly because they work with my skin and are fragrance free. A lot has changed since the 80s, but there are still a few products I love. I was destroying my face as a teen so my mom took me to Clinique. I think that removing all the Noxema and Sea Breeze and the Apricot scrubs ; ) and paring my routine down to three things with no fragrance is what saved it! I think so many people now see them as basic, but they were truly revolutionary and continue to produce solid products. Even after the 3 step routine, their sunscreens and even cosmetics (Black Honey) set trends for decades. Also, they're still one of the few lines that provides extensive skincare training. Many others still just rely on their reps to do their own research online.

I've always liked Clinique. I've used their products off and on for the past 10+ years, and I always appreciate an improvement in the texture and balance in my skin. They've always classified me as a skin type 3, and the amount of alcohol in the clarifying lotion has never really bothered my skin. I've more recently started using the Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly instead of the Gel, because it seems to work better underneath sunscreen and tretinoin.

I could talk about this for hours. Clinique lured me in at age 13 with the bonus time (gift with purchase). I had bad acne and they nearly promised a cure with their 3 step program (I was type 3). Of course it didn't help with my acne, but I loved their makeup and still use it to this day, and some of their skincare too. I love that most of their products ARE fragrance free and Dr. Dray helped me realize that I had to insist on this to avoid irritation. I think their marketing was way better back in the 80s and 90s. They have so much more competition now. I loved hearing the history, Dr. Dray! I only knew it was a Lauder company.

60 year old chiming in. Loved the line back in the day, still love it now. I remember the solid milk grains and the 7th day scrub, don't use them now. But I do love the makeup removers as well as the dry skin toner and flagship yellow moisturizer for my combo skin. I saw the line as a more affordable option to Erno Lazlo at the time. It was a huge luxury but it really made a difference in my skin quality. Still does. And the iconic makeup bonuses. The raisin lip color to new clover blush and the blueberry powder shadow. Sooooooo many memories. It was my first grown up makeup and skincare. ❤️❤️❤️

Im 56 and still use Clinique to this day. I can no longer use the 3 step system but I love many of the products. I use Clinique take the day off cleansing oil followed by Vanicream gentle face wash. Clinique clairifying lotion 2 at night only. Clinique moisture surge gel as my eye cream and Dramatically different moisturizing gel as my daytime hydration. Australian gold tinted spf and Clinique moisture surge face spray to top off my base makeup and powders. My ride and die my holy grails of Clinique. I have incorporated other items into my skin care routine but for me some of their products are not replaceable. Great video. Fun watching. I have to say when I lived in Italy for many years I was able to buy Helena Rubinstein there at the Profumeria which is their department store beauty counters. I started using Clinique 3 stop regime when I was in my mid twenties after I was out of school and earning enough money to pay for this. It really made a huge impact on my skin. I will be 65 next month and always get compliments on my skin and have no wrinkles. Some of that’s good genes, some skin care and always sunscreen. I had to stop using Clinique makeup in my mid forties when my skin seemed to be super sensitive. I changed to mineral makeup and everything seemed to calm down. I did the slidey thingy! My mom, 74 yrs old, had used the system since the 60's. Still has the bar in the green container... Perhaps it's genetics, could be mere consistency, but everyone had always complimented her skin and thought she was younger. I'm now starting Tretinoin and the Dramatically Different Moisturizer has been really helpful.

My mother put me on 3-step when I was struggling with my skin aged 17. I was type 3. It (really) did save my life. I still remember the ORIGINAL "turnaround cream", "moisture on-call", cliniques first anti-aging "stop signs". It was so much a part of our family life I landed up working for Clinique. I was so proud to don their coat 🤣 Clinique training is still well respected (for what its meant to be used for). By the way, Clinique first touted exfoliation for skin. Anyway, time passes, and I still use some of their products ☺️

I LOVE the way the clinique cleansing bar smells. I have not purchased in about 20 years but I still remember the scent. I loved the way you press the toner out...the size of the product...the soap dish/holder...all the free stuff. I always thought consistency was a big part of both that and Proactive. It was made so easy. Simple packaging. Pre-made/curated by skin type.

Type 3 over here. I stand by it. I've grown up with it, and swear by it. They were the first brand that taught us about the importance of exfoliation and the use of Salicylic Acid in a very direct, no frills manner. Over the last few years, I have experimented with other more luxe and expensive brands, but their Clarifying Lotion, and Turnaround Serum are still in my lineup because there is nothing else as good in my opinion. I also swear by their eye products - opthamologist tested (you say we can't really trust that I guess) - they never irritate my eyes like so many other brands do. I think they have fallen behind on the innovation front. I expected more groundbreaking products in the vitamin C and retinol arena - theirs is just average.

I, too, am older and used Clinique right outa HS for many years. I had oily skin and developed adult acne but Clinique was good for my skin. The Type 3 clarifying Lotion had (still has?) salicylic acid in it. It was enough to exfoliate without stripping my skin. Later, I saw the dermatologist, Dr. Fulton in Tampa who developed Benzoyl Peroxide for acne - an absolute skin saver! I moved on to Paula's Choice at its inception, around 1994, and never looked back until lately. I need much more moisture due to LA's dry climate and that dreaded word --- aging!

I have to give Clinique props in that it got me and many of my friends to understand the importance of skincare early on. I was 13 or so the first time I went to a Clinique counter. At the time, I had super oily skin, but one of their reps told me I still needed to use moisturizer, I was like 😳 I still use their cleansing balm because it’s the only one I’ve tried that doesn’t burn my eyes and their cleansing oil for the same reason.

It felt fancy going to the counter and having products suggested to use and I also loved the free gifts with certain purchases. I also used several of their makeup products. Hi Dr. Dray, I used Clinique skincare products in high school. I really enjoyed their moisturizing lotion. I also remember using Coppertone sunscreen with SPF 6. The SPF in sunscreen was pretty low from what i remember. Not good at all ,as i still have sun spots from sun damage. And to be honest, I didnt wear sunscreen on the daily back then like I do now. I’ve just gone back to using the 3 Step system (1.0 clarifying lotion for me because I haven’t got time for drying my skin out with alcohol) and I forgot how much I enjoyed it! Pretty basic, but equally effective - especially with added SPF to finish!

I actually love Clinique. I’ve used the brand for at least 6 years now. I’m trying to move away from Clinique just because it’s not cruelty free. I’m trying Paula’s choice, but still didn’t find the perfect face wash. Clinique’s mild face cleanser is the best cleanser ever (at least for me).

My older sister worked for Este Lauder when Clinique was developed and introduced. She was promoted over to Clinique to do clinician training in stores. When I became a teenager she would give me tons of Clinique products. I was so lucky and I still use Clinique products to this day at 62 years old. I believe the "All About Eyes" gel is the best product they ever introduced. My sister is 75 and still uses some of the products.

I am a solid Clinique user for years, I love their skin care products and I have no desire to use anything else because of the quality results on my skin, I also use and like a lot of their cosmetics.

I used a lot of Clinique products in my younger days simply because they reliably did not irritate my skin. To younger people it may sound weird, but it used to be very difficult to find unscented, or generally less aggressive products back in the day. There's definitely a lot more variety nowadays, at all price points, of products that cater to more sensitive skin, or skin with various conditions, and more products that don't use as many potentially irritating ingredients, but back then, that was definitely not the case.

I’ve used the three step skin care for 43 years. I switched from the regular soap to the mild as I got older, and switched from the strongest toner to now the mild number 1. I have always used the dramatically different moisturizer. The key is definitely the consistency of always doing your routine every day. All this switching of products I see young women do is so disturbing to your skin. There’s especially no need for fragrances and irritating “natural” essential oils. Keep it simple.

I went to Clinique counter in college (1979) since they were the first cosmetic company I knew with products I could tolerate (I have lots of perfume and dye allergies). I used their 3 step routine (cleansing bar, toner and moisturizer) for almost 10 years until other products were coming out with fragrance free lines. It was pricey but the soap lasted a long time and had a great holder. I am very sun sensitive and waited for years for SPF lotions without PABA - wore lots of long sleeves and hats even in summer! So grateful for the innovative products available now.

Lol, I used my first paycheck as a new nurse to take myself to the Bullock's counter [west LA] and "take the test" and start taking care of my skin. Until then I was Noxema cream all the way!! What a n informative and fun for me walk down memory lane. At that time, those were the only products in that line... I have been an on again/off again customer since. I have used Clinique Skincare and makeup almost exclusively since the early 80’s. I’m 57 now and I think being consistent has helped my skin. Last year I began to transition to anti-aging skincare and have gradually moved away from Clinique. Their basic products are pretty affordable, but I have found a number of less expensive options for anti-aging compared to Clinique. I still use the Take The Day Off cleanser as my first step. I haven’t found anything that works as well.

I’ve used Clinique for about 20 years. It truly was a brand that has been their for each stage of skin care, from acne to now caring more about reducing the look of aging. I enjoy trying new brands and products but always go back to Clinique if my skin starts going a bit left…it always brings me back to normal after a few days of using it again.

I was a big fan of Clinique after having a reaction to a Charles Revson product. So bought into the whole hypoallergenic thing and it was good for years but not cheap. So I moved to Olay and loved the products with sunscreen built in 20 ish years ago. Now it is neutrogena cerave and Misshi because of this channel and skin looks sensational thank you.

I'm 68 and when I was VERY young, I saved my babysitting money, went to the department store and bought this trio of products. I never had acne but my skin was oily and I used to get this pimple close to the corner of my mouth when I was expecting my period. I loved these products and forbade my sister from touching them. Ironically, thanks to you, Dr. Dray, I use Vanicream Moisturizing Cream over my serum and always apply my Cotz sunscreen rain or shine. It's a lot cheaper and works! Thanks agaon.

My mom and I went to Marshall Field in Chicago and got the soap,toner, and lotion when I was 12 or 13yrs old. I never had any acne, I just loved taking care of my skin even at that age. Before I got Clinique, I was using drugstore products like Noxzema and Seabreeze toner. The clinic was such a wonderful step up for me. Just seeing that green box brings me back to an exact time in my life. So fun watching this video, and I learned way more than I ever knew about the people behind the product. Thanks!

I sold Clinique in the 80's when I was in my early 20's. My skin was always too sensitive to use the clairifying lotion-it burned my skin. I also couldn't use the dramatically different moisturing lotion (aka ddml in the industry), it had mineral oil in it that my skin couldn't take. I don't know if these formulations have changed since then or not, but I do know they've added a whole array of products to what was once a very limited, yet popular, 3-step skincare regime. Back then Clinique treated their staff very well. I stayed overnight in 4-star hotels where we received intensive training in selling current products and new product launches prior to coming to market. We were given lots of samples and a $100 'gratis' where we could pick out any items we wanted in order to familiarize ourselves with their product-line first hand! Thanks for putting out this video, it brought up so many great memories!

I’m just about to turn 65 yrs and I have been wearing Clinique products for most of my adult life. After having some horrible allergic reactions to fragranced products it was the hypo-allergic claims from Clinique that won me. To this day I still use, and love many products from their range of skincare and makeup. I live in the northern part of Australia and I feel that the skincare routine that Clinique promoted plus their early inclusion of active ingredients has helped my skin to stay healthy and for the most part still looks considerably younger than my age. 🤪😉 I have always loved the packaging with its pale green and lilac tones.

There’s something to be said about Lauders approach even though it’s pretty easy to critique nowadays. A close family member was an executive at the soap factory that made those once ubiquitous bars. All fancy in their foil wrapping. I must have 20 bars still. I can’t bear to part with them.

When I was in my late teens, I had no skin care routine, dry skin, breakouts and dark spots on my cheeks due to picking at my breakouts; I decided to try out the Clinique 3 step system, and it was a game changer for me. If nothing else, it provided me with a routine and products that were not irritating my skin. I used it consistently for a couple years, then I started looking for similar drugstore products. This was when KZbin, blogs and Instagram were somewhat in their infancy. More than 10 years later, my skin is still clear and thriving. Finding the right products, staying consistent and not trying too many things too often has really been the trick, but it all started with Clinique.

Yes, I visited a Clinique counter about 20 years ago. I bought the 3 step products plus some. It burnt my face so bad I had to call my dermatologist’s office and I was told to throw it away and stay away from it. They suggested Cetaphil to help calm and heal the skin, which it did. I have stayed away from the skin care at beauty counters because of this. I’ve used Cetaphil ever since but now will have to find something similar since the introduction of niacinimide into their jar of cream I’ve used for years.

'Helena' Rubenstein emigrated to Melbourne Australia (from Poland) in 1902. Soon after she opened her first salon, marketing the concept of glamour as a science... 'diagnosing' clients skin conditions and 'prescribing' treatments. HR's history is very interesting, as was today's video. Yes, I do remember the Clinque skin 'computers'! Lauder’s involvement and ideas and good for the Vogue editor who sought out a seriously accomplished dermatologist for her interview! I’m embracing Clinique once again after ruining my skin forcing to use drugstore brands 🥲. I prayed for Cerave & Cetaphil to work on my skin but developed cystic acnes on my cheeks which never happened when I was using Clinique. I have sensitive- oily skin, seborrheic dermatitis occasionally.

Great and accurate trip down memory lane! In 1970 I went with my mother to a store in Houston called Sakowitz and did the whole Clinique skin typing for my skin. The draw was the unfragranced products. I'd just come from McGovern Allergy clinic in Houston and was found to be allergic to about everything and the kitchen sink. I still use quite a bit of it although it is a little easier to find fragrance free products now. Wonderful memories!
