Differin gel was ROUGH for me but I stuck it out. The first six months my face was falling off. I couldnt smile without skin cells falling everywhere. It was so itchy and painful and red. My derm kept telling me it was normal and to keep it up. I ended up at a cosmetic surgeon for a different reason and she told me to reduce it to 2 times a week and my skin finally improved. Definitely do not recommend daily use if this is youe first retinoid!

Since using Differin, I noticed my dry eyes started getting worse to a point I can't wear contacts for too long. I read an optometry article which explains that if retinoids come in contact with eyelids and are absorbed, they can damage epithelial cells in the meibomian glands and cause significant dry eyes. I always try to avoid the eye area when applying Differin and wash my fingertips afterwards. Even though I was so careful, it ended up in my eyes. Maybe because it entered the eyes when I applied eye cream with Differin residue still on my fingers. Benzoyl peroxide and salicyclic acid can cause dry eyes too.

I definitely use it around my eyes, and while I had redness and dryness and peeling for a while until my skin got used to it, that can be mitigated by using a good moisturizer and petrolatum OVER it. Make sure your skin is dry before using differin. If you use moistureizer before differin wait for your skin to completeley absorb it then afterwards put differin that way it wont spread. And redness might be from the sun because differin can be irritating with sun. Thats why it is mostly used at night time.

I quit the birth control pill almost four months ago and started differin gradually around two months ago and i’m wondering how your experience was with it as a treatment after quitting birth control and managing the acne after it… would you say it helped you? what was your experience like? were you able to tell which was your differin purge and which was your post-birth-control acne? sorry for all the questions I’m just super curious :)

I'm on a skin rejuvenation journey at age 70, after being treated for pre-cancerous places. I had dual fraxel laser procedure #1 last month, and will get the #2 procedure next week. My derm says I should start on a retinoid after my skin heals from the procedures. Here is our plan to start slowly and build up my tolerance. First I will use an OTC retinol, then graduate to differin after my skin acclimates to retinol. After I acclimate to differin, I can start on tretinion. The derm also recommends to use moisturizer to control dryness.

Just took my son to the dermatologist for acne advice. Because of your videos, I was able to ask intelligent questions. She recommended washing twice a day, using Differin every night and gave us samples of a foaming facial cleanser. Needless to say, I am not following her guidelines. I want my son to stick with this routine and know that he will not if his skin is peeling and uncomfortable. We will be following a "Dr. Dray" routine of washing once a day with a gentle hydrating cleanser and using Differin twice a week. Sure wish my local derm was Dr. Dray educated.

@@annp.2746 I wouldn't really describe it as a purge. But I was still breaking out and had several weeks of really flakey skin. But then after that settled down, so did my breakouts. And then I just sorta noticed "oh, I'm not breaking out like I used to". So it was very gradual. For the record, I'm in my mid 30s and have oily skin. I wouldn't say that I have ever had severe acne, but I have always had frequent breakouts. It's kind of like my skin would be clear except for always having a bad pimple or two that I was dealing with. I still get some pimples here and there, but it's not constant anymore. I have many more days now where my skin is clear. And I don't feel like I have to use the differin every day now. I use it every other day and also the Tula clear it up gel. For me how I combat dryness from washing my face twice a day is using a light face oil before moisturizer. Yes my face is oily but I’ve discovered that using a mild face oil actually stops my face from producing more oils. So I think to counter the dryness from washing off natural oils , introduce a light face oil. I’ve also found that using the oil before moisturizer is better for me than after moisturizer because the moisturizer locks in the oils and my skin doesn’t dry out but also doesn’t over produce oil

Butttt when i am using differin, because it is drying, especially when i start it, i should opt more for the moisturisers and sunscreens I use in the winter - so that's why the moisturisers are generally thicker and for dry skin types. When I was in my 20s, my dr put me on retin A because I was breaking out. I had monthly facial waxings, so the next time I went to have an upper lip wax, the asthetician ripped my skin off. Tears popped out of my eyes. I was bleeding from my upper lip. I ended up with a "mustache" for months. A mustache due to the darkening of pigmentation and scarring of the skin that was ripped off. I never had a facial wax again. Nor did I continue to use retin A. I found years later that AHA works very well for me, and gave me really good results. It actually improved my skin in every way, reducing lines and acne. For the first time in my life, when I was 35 yers old, I was told I had beautiful skin. I do use differin now because I find the gel is quite tolerable and it seems to make my skin look better, more clear and even. I still use AHA every few days. I just wonder if those 2 products are compatible. But I don't use either one of them daily. I do it every other day, intermittently.
