I’ve progressed from cosmetic retinol ( one that dr Dray has recommended), to adapoline and experienced marked improvement in signs of aging. I then moved on to prescription tretenoin and saw modest improvement over adapoline. Just my experience, but I would say if you are on a budget, adapoline is the best bang for your buck.

Same experience but I’ve only been on tret .025% so maybe at a stronger dose it would do better than adapalene. We will see! And I suspect adapalene .3% is prescription only. Never seen a brand sell one over .1%

@@cleogirl82 I recently bought the .1% Adapalene at Kroger and the Kroger facial sunscreen that Dr. Dray did a video on (very cute and funny video informing us about the new Supergoop dupe Kroger facial sunscreen SPF 40) and I'm glad she did because I love the shimmer facial sunscreen. I haven't been using the 0.1% Adapalene long enough to notice any difference ( just one application ) but I'm going to stick with it and use the entire tube before I decide to go up in strength. I may end up staying with the 0.1% We may have to go to a derm for the higher strength as I've only ever seen the lower strength sold otc. I'm ok with that because I've learned from Dr. Dray that a higher percentage doesn't always mean better results. Just be sure to use a good moisturizer and sunscreen on your face always.

Thank you for sharing. While differin gives me terrible acne, tretinoin gives me clear skin in a few days. I was evaluated by the doctor having acne but being 34 was not covered for retin a. Derm gave me tazorac it didn't work. To buy retin at rx was 200 dollars too expensive. Moved to Europe I buy tretinoin for 20 dollars. TOTALLY UNFAIR OUTRAGEOUS people in US who need tretinoin have to pay such a high price, WHY. I'M DISGUSTED. I'M 47 now still using tretinoin works great, tried adapalene Differin, terrible acne. As soon as I stop tretinoin I get huge pimples. Something is wrong with the system in US, it needs to stop.

@@SharonBurc I use differin gel; I think because it was cheapest when I started. And I use Skin Aqua spf 50+ UV Super Moister Gel (it's in a white bottle with a gold-ish top). it is a Japanese sunscreen that includes alcohol. It dries down without a residue. I do not find it drying on my skin, but my skin is pretty well balanced in terms of not oily and not dry. Also, it's super eye friendly. (For moisterizer, I use Cerave PM)

I’ve used both adapalene and tretinoin. When I was younger and acne was my biggest concern I enjoyed using adapalene. It wasn’t overly irritating and it definitely helped reduce my acne. As acne became less of a concern and wrinkles started to appear I switched to tretinoin. I definitely saw an improvement in the look and feel of my skin after switching to tretinoin. My uneducated opinion based solely on personal experience is to go for tretinoin if you have access to it and your primary concern is anti aging. Hope that helps someone out there:)

I am middle aged so I do have wrinkles. Nothing completely stops aging. That being said, I think I have less wrinkles than most people my age. I attribute the condition of my skin to tretinoin and I will definitely keep using it!

I’ve used both tret and adapalene individually for over a year and I can say tret gives me a much better “highlighted from within” poreless and even complexion result. I used adapalene for a while simply because I did not have access to tret and found it to be great to use while dealing with an active breakout BUT, with extended use I did not see the same super clear complexion as with tret. I have both now and use tret mainly. But will swap it out for adapalene+benzoyl peroxide when pimples arise.

I used adapalene for over a year. Switched to tretinoin and have been using for 9 months now. In my opinion, adapalene helped with controlling the severity and duration of acne breakouts. Tretinoin has helped improve the brightness, clarity, oiliness and smoothness of my skin. Tret helps control my acne breakouts as well. They both cause flaking in my experience but tretinoin has made a bigger difference by far imo and in a shorter amount of time. Also with tret I don’t have to use it every night, with adaplene I feel you have to be more consistent with application. Either one will be a game changer! 🎉

I love the avene retrinal. My skin is very sensitive, too. My kiddo uses adapalene, and I've tried it a few times. It is a little more drying, so make sure to use that avene cicalfate. I also use the adapalene on the top of my hands (I apply it on my hands and then to my teenagers face) and have noticed the adapalene works way better at fading the dark spots on my hands vs the avene. Also, the retrinal I can use around my eyes and eyelids without issues.

It took 14 months (average 5 nights a week) but Adapalene gel took all of the sunspots off of my face, including a dark one on my chin that was the size of a nickel. Florida sun has not been kind to my face over the years. I can get Tretinoin for free with my insurance but my skin is pretty happy right now with the Adapalene every other night and 2 layers daily of SPF.

i'm 43 and been using adapalene 0.1 for around 3 yrs. i would honestly say my skin is better now than when i was in my 20s or 30s. i dont have acne but throughout my adult life since puberty, sun damage from back when i was a teen to my early 20s due to sports causes me to have unbalanced skintone and im also easily prone to hyperpigmentation. i don't even use vitamin c, tried it and find vit c combo with retinoid (not used together obv) was just too much for my skin (so dry and itchy), so i uses only alpha arbutin, niacinamide and adapalene with sunscreen and a bha exfoliant once or twice a week. my uneven skintone and any pigmentation marks, and even the milia i had since god knows when, they have all faded tremendously in the past few years, i've even been commented my skin is glowing and asking what did i do. I'm considering the next step though. i think i'm ready to go for prescription strength retinoid

I was so excited to see this video topic. Started using adapalene 0.3% at age 19 originally for cystic acne. It worked big time and I have been using it ever since. What I didn't realize for so many years is that it could potentially have an anti-aging side effect. I am almost 37 now and have zero wrinkles. I didn't even start wearing daily sunscreen until I was 33. In my experience the higher strength adapalene works. I know my experience isn't scientific research, but it is insane that this hasn't been studied in more depth yet.

​@@Jessica-re3ke I only applied it at night and washed my face every morning. I did use a benzoyl peroxide based prescription in the AM though which is bad for sun exposure too. My dermatologists over the years were not helpful in educating me (I've since learned most of my skin info from KZbin etc). I'm not sure if any of them told me I should wear sunscreen even though they were writing me these prescriptions. I was just happy I didn't get boils on my face anymore! And I did apply sunscreen on days when I would be in the sun a lot (pool, beach, etc.) because I have auburn hair and super pale skin so my skin burns very very easily.

​@@Jessica-re3ke actually I just remembered a terrible sunburn I got on my face at a football game in my 20s. I had NO idea it would be so sunny and I was stuck there for hours. It was a bad sunburn. But I had a few other bad sunburns before using a retinoid too, so who knows whether those prescriptions made my sunburn worse than they would've been otherwise.

I agree that i also learned more from youtube about skin care than dermatologists 😆 i am only on week one, and nervously anticipating the big acne “purge” everyone talks about. I feel like differin will either work really well, or like some cases ive seen, cause a horrible breakout that never goes away and just makes my face worse than when i started 🙈 my acne is not horrendous, but just very consistent, never seems to go away and the scars also never fade…so maybe differin will help 🤷🏻‍♀️ thanks for your personal experience

I know this isn’t advised but I slug over adapalene (with aquaphor) haha and it def smoothes out my forehead and any creases. It’s never irritated my skin even tho I have super sensitive skin! I also think because the formula is so minimal in ingredients, my skin likes it more. Retinols I have tried just irritated my skin when applied over moisturizer, which gave my cheeks a saggy look. I don’t know why. I do want to try tretinoin in the future but for now, adapalene does the job really well for me.

I swtiched from retinol to adapalene/Differin almost 8 weeks ago and I have seen noticeable changes in my skin. It is brighter, clearer and smoother. I kept the rest of my routine the same, so I know the adapalene made the difference. My skin was already in good condition and I have a solid routine. But adapalene made a big improvement to my skin. I'm almost 48 years old and was considering moving up to retinal or even tretinoin. But I'm sticking with adapalene :)

I’m trying to not get my hopes too high because I’m in the category of people who it can end up not working for (fair, sensitive skin, I get flushed really easy when I’m embarrassed or upset) so I’m cautious and hesitant. I used adapalene for one year before switching to .025% tretinoin. It evened out my skin tone and gave me a glow. But as a wiser person with dry skin who started late in the game, my deeper wrinkles respond better to Tret versus adapalene. It could be due to the cream vehicle of the generic tret versus the somewhat drying gel of the adapalene. Having experience with both, I do feel that adapalene would better suit a younger person with acne for prevention. In both cases, I applied every other day with moisturizer underneath, to compare apples to apples. Before those two, I started slowly with CeraVe retinol. My sensitive skin is so happy with the low dose tret that I don't feel the need to increase to .1%. This is all thanks to Dr. Dray of course!

Honestly I’d have to say I saw the biggest difference using the CeraVe first, only because I wasn’t using any anti-aging products at all, prior to that. They each work extremely well in their own ways. It depends where you are at in your skin journey, your age, etc. If you can be more specific with what you mean by “respond” I can answer you better.

@@catacombss It's not meant to be used as a spot treatment like BP, although I suspect it would be effective. I wash my face at night, moisturize, and then apply it to my face being careful not to get it too close to my eyes. Some people say to moisturize after, or to moisturize before and after, but this has worked well for me.

I used tretinoin for my acne for 3-4 years with no good results. All it caused was dryness and constant peeling. I switched to Differin and saw results in mere days with no purging. I’ve been using it for over a year now and I’m super happy with it. It cured my hormonal acne and post acne hyper pigmentation. I still avoid dairy and sugar but when I do indulge my breakouts are fewer and heal quicker. I also avoid fragrance in skincare and makeup and no chemical sunscreen.

Honestly speaking, retinol wasn’t well known as an anti-aging ingredient among the general consumers until about 2years ago. But I have been using Differin for about 15 years already. I’m 44 now, and nobody thinks I am close to 35. I feel it’s just not enough scientific proof for Differin having anti-aging effects. But I know it does that for me. I am tired of retinols after trying for a year. So much for side affects. I am a minimalist, I won’t stop using Differin.

@@Jess-737 This could very much be a cultural difference situation. For Asians, not a lot of us speaks fluent English. Until about 2 years ago a KZbinr who lives in the US, started telling ppl about retinol, the skincare industry in Asia really just started advertising retinol in these couple years. I knew it, but I didn’t care to make videos to talk about it. The difference is really bazar. Such as ppl in the west are starting to get wild over Japanese skincare products and Korean products. And these products we have been using them for over 20 years. Isn’t that so interesting? I have created a KZbin channel planning to talk about these cultural differences exchanges. But I haven’t really started on how to elaborate this topic yet. It could be interesting.

So I use adapalene for now. The reasons why I use it are 1) the ease of access (while still knowing it's properly regulated and formulated), and mainly 2) I get the idea from the info available, and experience using it, that it's potentially not as strong as tretinoin. At this point in life (39 yo) I feel it's enough (together with all the other things I do) to keep wrinkles at bay and I don't want to overkill it, especially when considering stem cell depletion etc. I feel I will start with T when I'm about 45-50, or when I start seeing more stubborn lines. I just want to make a small point here in favour of adapalene. We have studies that, although small or not thorough enough, point more in the direction of it working than not (for wrinkles). Now taking that into account and knowing that retinoids work by binding to two different types of receptors in the skin: retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoid X receptors (RXRs). The RARs are primarily involved in the regulation of sebum production and reducing inflammation (helps acne reduction), while the RXRs play a role in regulating collagen synthesis and skin cell differentiation (helps wrinkles). We know that adapalene is effective for acne, that is its label use, so it's enough to bind effectively to one type of receptor (RAR). I think it's is more likely than not that it works also in the other receptors. Again not saying it does since they are independent pathways, just saying that it is more likely to than not if you consider everything. In my case, and I may be biased (plus 1 case means nothing), I saw a considerable difference on my forehead lines several months after I started using it (about 4 years ago).

Ive been using use both Adapalene 0.1 and Retinal 0.1 (Avene) interchangeably for about 2 months and find that Adapalene causes less sensitivity and less dryness than Retinal. It works wonders for minor breakouts (almost gone overnight) and my skin texture is so much better - redness is better, pores are less congested and the lines around my forehead are less noticeable. I agree with others that on a limited budget, Adapalene works as well (if not better) than Retinal.

Differin was my first venture into the retinoid world, and gave me amazing results for acne and skin texture… I got that “glow from within” and even faded acne scars within 2 years. Love the Gold Bond retinol and Gold Bond Pure Moisturizer. The retinol I use at might and the pure I use in the morning. I also have been using Differin Adapalene for many years after moisturizing at night. My skin at 66 is beautiful. No one ever guesses my age correctly. All this is thanks to Dr Dray. Discovered your channel 3 years ago, during the pandemic, and since then have been religiously hooked on adapalene, tretinoin, fragrance free sunscreen, simple fragrance free moisturizer and double cleansing. My skin looks incredible. People assume I spend a ton of money on treatments and crazy expensive skin care but I actually don't spend much (especially, comparing to before) since I no longer chase gimmicks. At 35, my skin looks better than it did at 21. Tight pores, zero breakouts, no dry patches/no crazy oil production (I have combination skin) and no fine lines. Absolutely life changing. @@annette-in-vegas I initially started with adapalene to get my skin used to retinoids. I then moved to tretinoin 0.05 and now am at 0.1. I still use adapalene when taking breaks from tretinoin. If I am taking a break from tretinoin, I can use adapalene either in the evening or in the morning (followed by sunscreen). When I am using tretinoin, it's only at night. I layer it lightly on top of moisturizer and then follow up with Cerave Healing Balm (or Vaseline) - this helps keep any redness/sensitivity to a minimum.

I have used Adapalene for anti aging, and it definitely worked. I switched back to Neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair, though, because the price per month was about the same, and I like the feel of it better. The Neutrogena also has a good moisturizer in it, so I don’t have to moisturize separately. I like having fewer steps in my routine.

Adapalene 0.1 has transformed my skin and so glad I tried it! It took my long time to get use to it and being able to use it regularly - I have sensitive skin - however significantly improved my acne ( I still break out a lot - but spots are less, smaller, less cystic, and they don't stick around too long), smoothed my skin texture, brightened up the complexion giving me a very nice glow. Even if my skin isn't spot free and even in tone by any means, I can see and feel a massive difference in its quality. I still use it over moisturisers and has to be a tiny amount - otherwise I feel it messes up my skin barrier a bit. Epiduo worked great for a bit but too drying for long term use. I have tried tret and couldn't adjust to it. Now trying some retinal thinking it would be easier given my experience with adapalene, but still finding it a bit drying.

I’m 63, I’ve used adapalene in the .01% due to adult acne since it became available. I have very few wrinkles and fine lines. People often think that I’m at least 10 years younger than I am. I’m also an avid sunscreen wearer, due to being a fair redhead. So, I’m not sure if it’s the Adapalene or the sunscreen or the effects of both.

The instability of tretinoin made me switch to adapalene. I refrigerated tretinoin and it still started to get weaker and lose effectiveness a month or two after opening. Adapalene is much more stable, doesn't have to be refrigerated and I noticed similar results with my fine lines, considering I'm in my early 30s, adapalene beats tretinoin and cosmetical retinols so far.

I have been using adapalene for 2.5 years. Gradually I have managed to adapt my under-eye area to this topical. The results are amazing: not only do I not have acne any more, my skin became so much brighter, radiant and uniform. I never use foundation or concealer. I get comments that I look around 25, and I am really really not…To your point, Dr. Dray, I do apply sunscreen diligently (two layers in the morning and another layer if I run outside). You mentioned on numerous occasions it will not hurt with long term use. So, with trerinoin so expensive, likely not covered by insurance and requiring prescription, that miracle topical, adapalene, seems to be a great alternative. I used adapalene for at least 8 years for acne.. during that time I was discouraged by volume loss in my round face throughout my 20s. My skin looked great, no acne, and didn’t have wrinkles. I switched to 0.025% tret around 8 months ago and my pores are almost none existent and I think I am starting to see some collagen come back in my face. My goal is to build tolerance to the 0.1% tretinoin. I think adapalene is great for 30 and younger, sensitive skin or skin that can’t tolerate atleast 0.025% tret, or those who can’t afford the process of getting tretinoin. If you aren’t in those categories, go with tretinoin. Goodrx makes generic tretinoin affordable.

Okay so, I started using Retinol 0.2% with Squalane from the Ordinary. It was irritating slightly, and my skin slightly broke out at the beginning. But my skin started to tolerate it after 2 months. Now I am confident enough to move to 0.5% strength. Fingers crossed. Once I can tolerate the 1% Retinol for one whole year, I will move to RetinAl like Dr Dray suggested. Now I am just 26, my goal is to be promoted to RetinAl by the time I am 32/33. Hope that’s a good plan.

Boomer here, we didn't know how much the sun damages skin when I was young. I was very active outdoors- boating, golf, fishing, all while living at the coast and purposely seeking a suntan! Now in my later years I am spend many thousands of dollars to treat the signs of aging. Facelift, botox, fillers, and laser resurfacing. All are painful, expensive, and requiring downtime. Listen to this woman! It doesn't matter how many cosmetic products you put on your face, if you skip the sunscreen, you will lose the war!

I used Differin every other night for six months but sadly, saw zero effect. Noteably, I do already have pretty okay skin with few fine lines for 41. I've found that I have a bigger challenge keeping my skin moisturized and the skin barrier intact, and that makes a bigger difference in the appearance of my fine lines. Just my experience:)

I live in Italy and can buy tretinoin over the counter. It’s called Tretinoina SAME and costs under €10. I believe this is the case in Spain and Portugal too? I actually don’t like this product, I found it too harsh. I like the French pomade A313, much more gentle and effective.

I use tretinoin on my face and a little adapting on the rest of my body including my neck after I have moisturized. You can find good deals on generic adapalene and use just a tiny bit so I haven't found it super expensive. And I only do it once or twice a week.

For nuance, perhaps could we say that adapalene is a "pseudo exfoliant". Pseudo because its cellular mechanism is different than "true" exfoliant such as acids (AHA BHA etc.), but still sort of promote healthy new skin cells so to speak, thus giving a improved visual appearance of skin compared to nothing. So perhaps, we could say that at the very least, adapalene would work as a "pseudo exfoliant" giving more even skin tone and smother skin? What i try to say is that could we say that adding adapalene at least improves VISUALLY overall skin appearance (even though specific anti aging properties (wrinkles, fine line, collagen ) are not proven yet by studies?) (translation: Is using adapalene better than using nothing?).

You've convinced me to give differin a try for my neck and forehead/eye region where I have stopped putting my tret. I think that combo will serve me best. btw, I got the Neutrogena Deep and Medium Deep physical sunscreens you've reviewed and can tell you they definitely leave a whitecast. In fact, it's about equal, despite the actual formulations being significantly different in color. I think the formula is so sheer that the color hardly matters, only the shiny stuff hidden in it. If I was a cooler undertone it might not be visible, but I have a warm undertone.

Hi Dr Dray! Greetings from Canada 👋 I’ve been using differin for 2 years now for my acne. I apply it at night and use benzoyl peroxide in the morning. Really effective combo! One thing I noticed besides the decrease in acne is an improvement in skin texture, it’s evened out a lot. I’m super happy with the results, and if differin has any anti aging benefits that would be a huge plus haha ❤ great video!! EDIT: since you guys are asking, I used to get differin from my doctor, you need a prescription for it in Canada. But now I get it from iherb since it’s not covered under OHIP for me anymore.

Fellow Canadian here. I have a prescription of Tactupump which is a combo of adapalene and BP for acne I’ve used on and off for years. It’s only available with prescription in Canada and only in this formulation combo. I never use it on the skin around the eyes as the BP would aggravate that delicate area and only at night. The acne improves significantly and also notice improvement on skin texture, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. Sunscreen also is a big factor on improvement.
