This truly is mind blowing, superb work ! Congrats ! I am impressed :-) I had an amiga until 1993 ... then switch to PC ... mainly because of Doom. I remember Carmack comments at the time about Amiga and CD32 not able to do Doom for technical reasons... you proved it all wrong, good job. Some people in the comments are saying how this would change history if send back in time to 1993. Well I think to change history it should be send back to 1989, because then it would not only impact the game market but probably heavily impact the development of Amiga 1200 and CD32 with design choice oriented toward this new type of games. And for a fun though experiment, if this runs on an Amiga 1000 ... imagine this demoed on the official launch of the Amiga 1000 in 1985 ... Lol I don t think anyone present would have been able to process what they had in front of their eyes :-) :-)

Not exactly the type of game the Amiga was designed for--it does not take full advantage of the hardware. The idea of this coming before Doom, and even Wolf3D and the earlier id 3D games is rather fanciful. Doom came out in mid-Dec 1993. Did you already get a PC before the year was out to run Doom?

Congratulations on many levels. - I thought the A500 framerate wouldn't be good enough but it's just fine. I don't even feel the need to load the game on an A1200 config and prefer the added nostalgia aspect of thinking that's how it would have run on my A500. I really didn't expect the game to be so convincing on that level. - I like what the engine can do when it comes to level geometry. These little structures and crates, recesses in the walls. I played, liked and finished wolfenstein, but it never feels like you're in a castle. Dread's level feels like a place. If ceiling or floor "variations" are implemented and lifts, different floors, etc... any other new architectural element will be really really impressive because it's already unexpectedly great. - The textures are beautiful. I didn't expect the game to be able to convey that kind of atmosphere. Truly the graphics are good enough to allow a theme and a background story. (contrary to non textured 3d games for example). I love that specific corridor that has the brown texture instead of the bricks (before the shotgun room). It just gives an identity to the place "Ho, I'm there." Rooms are also very identifiable. - The gameplay and difficulty level are well tuned. It's fun. Of course, there's nothing new under the sun but it really is fun to play. Maybe, there are too many rooms which require the player to kill the enemies by remaining at the entrance before entering. - Also, it'd be nice to be able to pick up a few cartridge clips of real bullets for the gun, even if the rubber ones are infinite. The chaingun is really beautiful. - The secrets are cool and nicely hinted at. A secret corridor would have been even better. Anyway, awesome, impressive and fun.

Many thanks for the feedback! :) I think you're right about the level design and how the enemies play. Current demo was more about showcasing the engine than providing a refined gameplay experience. Awesome comment and feedback like usual @Lectures Alternatives. :) Yeah, I am agreeing with John here. I mean we do have variable ceiling heights currently although those are set to presets of 64/96/128px. Even in its current state I think we can do A LOT architecturally to sell the game even more. Once variable floors are in, with stairs and elevators I honestly think we can build a environments that feel like "real places". The big map (that will be offered to patreons) already have a lot of extra architectural details that sells that feeling. it is super nice to see. I am have started to make a level of my own in doom builder. It's a lot of fun, back in the 90's I did some pretty ambitious multiplayer build engine maps for Duke3D. :) and now with some added expertise as a gamedev and level designer it would be a lot of fun to contribute in that department as well. :D

Will there be options for higher detail modes at some point for faster computers? Anyhow, well done. Extremely impressive!!!!! :)
@johntsakiris37172 жыл бұрын
That's unlikely as the gfx are custom made for this exact aspect ratio and resolution. We'd need to redo them for this option to have any point (though 1x1 mode will add better quality upscale-downscale, even with current gfx). It's a similar deal code wise as well. At least with better machines you do get smoother frame rates so that's already something. In any case, until the development is complete nothing is really off the table. Personally I think the update that would make the most sense would be floor textures for starters.

Amazing and exciting video, once again. i just tried the demo .exe on the Amiga Vampire V4, i know it's not the target machine, but that does not mean i was not so impatient to try it :) ... and it works like a charm, keyboard, mouse, video, audio, all looks and sounds ok. Only, well, i had to increase the brightness of my monitor, a little, because it's quite dark (what about a Brightness option :) ?), also increased mouse sensibility at max, which fit better, here, for me. Speed looks like on the A1200 video by Dennis, it shows a "3.20" value in average, oscillating between 2.82 at min, and 3.48 at max, from what i've noticed. And framerate value is higher when using shake or checker modes. The game itself is really pleasant to play, it's incredible work, dudes!
@PixelShade3 жыл бұрын
thank you! have a look at your gamma settings of your monitor is it 1.8 2.0 2.2? (could also be referred to RGB and limited RGB)... The framerate is achieved by dividing 50 with the number in the corner. 50/2.82 = 17.73fps. Choosing rendering options, default is in my opinion best quality with minimal performance inpact. The scalines option improve the framrate somewhat while the checker & shake are blurry, blocky and has worse performance. :)
@KKAltair3 жыл бұрын
Shake mode adds some Copper instructions, but checker requires assembling every other line, which is quite a bit of Blitter work. @@KKAltair you must be pushing the Amiga's custom chips hard to get it to run faster than the stock ST since if the 68000 was doing most of the heavy lifting - like say the x86 original versions of DOOM or other 3Dish games from back in the day on the ST and Amiga - then the ST should run faster due to the higher clock speed of its 68k. It does look great on both platforms. I'm very interested to see what the enhancements for the STe will look and sound like... JagPad support perhaps?

@@KKAltair Don't worry, I wasn't expecting the ST to run as well as the Amiga considering the Amiga is a much more powerful machine

@@TheJeremyHolloway Do not forget that the interleaved bitplanes of the ST are normally faster for 3D graphics, as well, as they are partway to chunky pixels. Dread uses the Blitter and sprites on the Amiga, though. I would love to see an analysis video of the rendering and of the port.

Sorry if I have asked before. But will there be a boxed version of this stunning game when its finished?🙃😄
@PixelShade3 жыл бұрын
The only thing I know is that I will definitely want to do the boxart. :) We are far away from that though. this was the "engine demo". The engine will improve and once we deem it to have most features we will start to revamp the game. We still need to treat it as a free-time project, but we are on track of creating something with an updated, consistent and unique art direction, new palettes, new/impressive graphics more map features etc. So really we are not close to game release yet. but we will reach that point. Once we do, we would really like to offer boxed version (I think I speak for all of us on this)

Are you ever going to add flat textures and all the weapons that were in freedoom? Why do you want to make this for "Amiga 500" if there are other 'Amigas' to choose from? I actually really like the sprites in this so far.

>Are you ever going to add flat textures? Flat textures? We can straight color a wall or floor/ceiling any single color we want already (from our palette). > Are you ever going to add all the weapons that were in freedoom? No, we're gonna make new, original weapon gfx for the full game. >Why do you want to make this for "Amiga 500" if there are other 'Amigas' to choose from? Given me some insight into how vintage HMDs could have worked better, been looking into 80s/90s 3D & VR tech lately. ;) You should all be very proud for how well you collaborated together, so often I see individuals settling for a lot less trying to go at it alone. :D

@@youtubesuresuckscock Varying floor heights will be implemented, so it will technically be a hybrid of Wolf and Doom on a mere 68000. Which is about the max you can reach. In demoscene productions, they can have fully 3D textured worlds - But those aren't games. Color palette is easily explained by the fact that we are talking OCS/ECS here, and not VGA. The same goes for textures (Which have been greatly improved thanks to Pixelglass) Somehow you expect a vis-a-vis equivalent of the PC code and cannot understand the ''why'' part on why this is impressive. So far (judging by your other postings here) the only person bull crapping here is you. On a technical level, this is a crowning achievement. The fact that you have yet to answer users who implore to start your own engine suggests a limited understanding of what is going on here.
