Great lesson. Thank you! I talked with Richard at Folkcraft today because I wanted to make some changes to my dulcimer order, and much of the conversation was centered on you. Richard gave you one of the greatest personal compliments one man can give another, in my opinion. We were talking about professions and he said he thinks you would have made a great pediatric oncologist if you had chosen that route, and that says a lot about a person when said to someone like me who spent his most of his adult life practicing cancer medicine. You and I don’t know each other well, but I can certainly see his point. I hope I have the privilege of meeting you in person one day.

Interesting variations of playing my favorite song. I love that you added music theory and gave examples. I haven’t been playing my mountain dulcimer lately and I wanting to learn more about it.

Really terrific video, Bing. The music lesson here is great for both learning the song and understanding a bit about chord progression. Thanks for taking the time to put together such an informative video!

Hmmm, I only hope someday it will sound somewhat like yours. I have only been playing a little over a year. I'm a senior beginner (over 60 yrs of age).

(note to self: 12:40-chord substitutions; 13:30 the rule is... Maj, min, dim chords from scale.) I've never heard anybody relate it like that. I kind of knew it but it never really sank in. That little bit at the end is just too cute. Thanks Bing.

Just found you recently, and KZbin isn't showing me your videos in sequence. Still loving each one I find, though. Do you have a video explaining that double dulcimer and the uses of each side of it?
@bingfutch4 жыл бұрын
Dulcimerica Episode Guide - tinyurl.com/dulcimericaguide - use this to work through the videos in sequence - it's updated weekly! I mention the double quite a bit, but in short, I use two different tunings for the most part; CGG on the far side and DAD on the near side. I also have a double that's chromatic (far) and standard (near) and will be taking delivery on a brand new double next month that will be chromatic bass (far) and standard (near.)

I've got one side tuned DAD and the other side tuned CGG - both tunings that I have extended repertoire in. : )

It’s called a courting dulcimer. The theory is, in the early days, if the kids were courting, you could leave them alone as long as they were making music. As long as they played, their hands weren’t busy doing “other things”.

A quick question, Sir - You endorse V-picks. Specifically, which one do you use? I have become very disillusioned with the big yellow, red, and blue picks that all the music stores sell for the dulcimer. The quality of their finish is horrible. I try my best to file the rough edges created by the molding process, while I wonder why I pay a lot less money for an incredible, textured, guitar pick. Thank you for your help with my question, and your wonderful teaching videos. I am "more mature" (old as dirt), and have to budget carefully, but I plan on becoming a patron by early autumn.

Hi, Dar! The "Bing" Ultra-Lite is .80mm and has great flex for strumming, but also firm enough for more control while flat-picking. The "Bing" Lite is 1.5 mm and is best for flatpicking only - a little too thick for clean strumming. They both can be found here: bingfutch-com.myshopify.com/collections/musical-instruments-and-accessories - let me know if you have any questions!

Well, besides calling it a "quickstudy", this is also more of an intermediate episode that focuses on arranging rather than actually teaching the tune. Would you like to see a beginner-level episode that teaches this tune?
