Glad you got down safely Joel, and everyone was safe. Another good thing is Dreadnought will fly again ! I'd be really interested to see an autopsy of the engine.

So happy you were able to land safely, and no other damage to yourself or the plane. Well done!

Eric, thanks for sharing this interview. Joel: Great work getting it on the ground safely! Seeing the formation videos made me wish I could share my formation photos of Dreadnought at Madera 1984. I was riding along with Tiger Destefani in his stock Mustang Mangia Pane, in formation with Dreadnought and John Crocker's modified Mustang Sumthin Else. We did a mock air race for the Madera airshow crowd. I've been a huge fan of Dreadnought and the Sanders Family ever since.

It really sucks when a something breaks or goes wrong like this before a race, obviously, just sympathizing. Especially scary in the air and stressful with money and repairs. Like another commenter said, "Glad everyone was okay." Still super sucks. Great and unique video. Never heard anyone talk about stuff like this outside of cars. Thanks, Joel, for doing this interview. The videos with the sound of engine failure in the air is cool too!

Glad you were able to get landed safely and no major damage to the airframe so Dreadnought will fly again! Hope to see the "autopsy" photos.

Thank you for the update on the catastrophic engine failure on the beautiful "Dreadnaught". I have previously seen a video of the failure and the superb landing you performed under far from ideal conditions. I hope there is no additional damage except to the engine, God Bless and stay safe.

You traded speed for altitude and brought you both home safe.. 👍🏻👍🏻. Great flying.

I was right there and saw it happen.. great job! I saw the chase plane catch you as soon as you pulled up! I heard you guys had to “crunch” the prop though to get the tow bar on! Lol

Oh man, if I was the pilot and heard such engine noise & seizure, if I had one, my parachute would not work due to being contaminated with icky stuff from me.

There I was , with plenty of altitude above me …. Maybe I should shut the engine off ?

I’ve only just realised that Dreadnought now has a standard vertical fin and rudder after years of having a larger fin. Anybody know when the change was made and if it affects the handling negatively? I thought the larger fin was needed to offset the additional torque from that massive engine

Perhaps a flame trap in the intake could have prevented the backfires.
