Just testing out my own "Dreadnoughts" miniatures game. This is an amalgamation of a whole set of different "Battleship" rules out there. "General Quarters", "Dreadnought Era" and "High Seas". I just took 'the best' of what I liked and edited out what I didn't. The whole idea is to make a miniatures game that is fun to play and yet still has a respect for history. It is much more complicated than say Avalon Hill's "Jutland" but far simpler than say "Seikreig".

The last time I had a tape measure on the floor was for sizing up a new carpet. I guess a game like this is best played without Rover the pet dog wandering around the room. A very detailed test naval game, and I appreciate how much thought you have put into this test example. I prefer a much more simple naval battle like the ones in Victory In The Pacific--a dice-throwing operation and totally unrealistic, I must concede that. Given this test was done a year ago, I was wondering if there is a possible update on the cards. Meantime, I do enjoy your videos, you obviously know a great deal about the war game hobby, all credit to you.

Hi Gilbert, Nice to hear from you. (As you may have realised by now, I follow most if not all of your videos, and like to make the occasional comment on some of them from time to time.) Anyway sorry about the expression "on the cards". it is an expression used in Britain to indicate something that might be imminent. or something that might happen in the near future. I would interested in how the scenario plays out in your CanGames convention later this year. I imagine the miniature test played out here has now evolved, as games tend to when played at conventions.

I bought those quite sometime ago in the 1980's. They were from England and I think they were Davco.

What about the original AH Jutland? I remember the days of getting on the floor with my cardboard fold-up range finder....

Hi I'm Alan Rowlston the writer of "Dreadnought Era". firstly sorry to have only just found this video Nice to see you trying naval gaming. I like the fact you have kept the estimating system for firing and especially my fall of shot markers. There is the dice system which also uses actual fall of shot for those that have problems estimating or are playing solo. You could incorporate that for your demos as its easier for the public to play. The ship cards you have seem in my view a little too simple as we liked the detail of damage that could be achieved in reality. Though if your developing for public use then that may be easier I'd recommend reducing the play area size, i gave up crawling around on floors years ago. that action could play on a 6x4 table. I do like to see people developing new ideas, Dreadnought Era was written some 25 years ago and is now under as rewrite to clarify and correct some of the errors the publisher Table Top games made. cheers I hope things worked out.

Hello Alan I have run my 'Dreadnoughts' miniatures game at our local CanGames convention for years. The final rules are kind of a 'best of' your rules, Sekreig, High Seas Fleet my own ideas etc....They go over very well. Understand that the level of detail is probably not what you want, but I play to a beginners audience and I have to keep it simple. It's more complex that old AH "Jutland" but its not "Fear God and Dreadnought" either. This year I re-vamped the system again and am modifying your 'fall of shot' system also. Now, instead of the linear markers you invented I will have a circular clear plastic 'area' of fall of shot. A bit more visually pleasing for newbies to understand what is happening. I think your rules are very good but I never did figure out the 'damage model' for hits

Hey Ray, I will be running a larger scenario of this game at our local CanGames convention here in Ottawa in May. I ran it last year and it was quite successful. I'm not clear on your comment about the cards. Are you referring to the logs that I made up to track damage? I have finished these for all of the Capital ships at Jutland.

Well, the beauty of the system is that is all 'built in' with the 'straddle markers'. I don't know if you can see them that well in the video. This whole thing was more of an experiment for me rather than the public. But I figure there are some "Battleship" fans out there who might like seeing this. Anyway the shell is a 'hit' if one of the straddle 'lines' on the marker touches the model. Like I said, I didn't design this system, I'm 'borrowing' from all over the place.

No, actually this one will never see 'publication' because it's a 'best of' plus my own ideas. This is my own set of miniatures rules for Dreadnoughts, designed to play at our local convention "CanGames" here in Ottawa.

Dreadnought miniatures rules have been around in the hobby for quite some time. I guess many are out of print now. Clash of Arms has the definitive set of rules but in my opinion they are far too detailed to be practical. They are more of a 'study' than a game. GHQ and many other companies make dreadnought miniatures. Mine are NavWar from Great Britain.

This was just my own private method of creating a miniatures Dreadnought game and is very sparse for rules. I wouldn't even try to get it published. Jack Green's new 'Jutland' game to be published by Compass games however looks very promising.

What about 'straddling' shots? Would that help with range finding? How do you determine if a shot hits?
